Codex Pics + Dark Angels Limited Editions Sold Out?

Whoa, that was fast. Australia and New Zealand already appear to be sold out of the Codex: Dark Angels Reclusiam Edition. That took no time at all, and will most likely be an indicator of what the rest of us will see as pre-orders come live.

Also a few pics from Games Workshop for the new Codex

  1. The last codex I bought and thus got a good look at was the previous dark Angels codex. Is this new interior art a normal thing? It actually looks like they replaced my grim dark with noble bright sentiments given the cartoonish art.

    1. I have to say, I'm really confused by what some consider 'cartoonish'. You'd think that GW had replaced their interior art with something from Genndy Tartakovsky, the way some people talk about it.

    2. I'd love seeing Tartakovsky's take on 40k!! Now that would be immense. I can understand what people mean though, looks like the dark, brooding, gothic ink drawings are gone in favour of comic book style drawings :-/

    4. I actually really like most of the new art work, but each to their own. I've never played Dark Angels but I'm excited for this release, I almost want to assemble a force of fallen with cypher to lead them. I haven't got the data slate but are they supposed to be represented by chosen? I think I'd rather have them look like cypher. Would they be wearing black armour?

    5. I have the dataslate. The Fallen are ruled as chosen in power armor. Typically they are painted in black, but Cypher is sneaky and might be hiding his Fallen to look like modern Dark Angels.

My own Fallen are a collection of robed plastic dark angel models in black power armor.

    6. The art is still badass but caters to a wider audience. I think it's great, and those of us that were members of a darker more brooding inner circle should remember, when you play 40k the narrative you forge is as grimdark as you make it

    7. Its not that I mind new art or want everything excessively grimdark ( I know I know its 40k...) bit I feel the older black and whites where of a higher quality than these newer samples. They look kind of rushed...

    8. I like the idea of using the veteran squad as fallen but as I haven't read the fluff do they still have dark angel iconography?

    9. You know I think Cypher is actually a good guy. That data slate gave hint to what he has for his end game. I think he's like that captain or major- old school. The OIC constantly reminding everyone why we do what we do and trying to keep the new habits from deforming the original mission. I think he's always trying to help the chapter in same way, behind the scenes.

The other thing, read the last DA book from Black Library.

      Spoiler-

      He surrenders himself.

    10. This internal artwork is pretty bad, I agree. It lacks any of the classical/baroque influences that made 40k seem so grounded in reality yet fantastic.

Now you have a terminator (the right side image is especially bad) with the face of a 14 year old boy. Basically it looks like fan-art mixed with a cheap anime. It lacks the grit and feeling of the old work.

To be fair the terminator on the left side page is not too bad.

    11. Most of the new art is rubbish. its all smoke and mirrors, but behind that the fundamentals are terrible. bad perspective, proportions, anatomy. this is all forgivable if the art feels comfortable in the end.
but it doesnt feel comfortable, it doesnt feel like 40k. it doesnt even feel like fan-art because fan-artists give a shit about the franchise they draw. Put the terminator from the post next to a terminator by Karl Kopinski, Jes Goodwin, John Blanche or even David Gallagher and while those guys who all draw and paint in vastly different styles, their terminators will look and feel as though they're part of the same universe and IP, the new stuff just looks out of place. It has all the same shapes as a terminator, all the same details, but looking at it, its not a terminator let alone a Dark Angels terminator. its like a bad clone, like someone wanted to rip off the IP but had to change it just enough to not get caught or didnt was working off a bad photocopy of the original.

but in the end i dont blame the artists, they're freelancers, and freelancers are traditionally put under a lot of pressure to deliver work quickly. And for some of them they'd never heard of what GW was or what a Space Marine was until they got the job. I blame their editors for not giving enough oversight. Because some of the art from the next marine dex, i dont know how even someone from HR would be ok with paying for it.

    12. they are in hope of it being bright and vibrant it will attract a different customer/consumer to those heavily "influenced" by the GW universe of wh40k. apparently people are lapping up this new art style.....dexs are selling at an all time high price point even with the possibility of dex's having a half life of usefulness.

    4. They don't allow you to order in one country and ship to another. I know this because I tried that on a different limited edition and GW Customer Service called me to explain.

    5. I figured as much. Plus it would take way to long to get into my hands that way.

      *resumes obsessive refreshing*

  3. From the sample Enhanced codex, Lion's blade Strike Force gives full BS during Overwatch (unless jinking). As expected, two demi companies gives free transports (excluding upgrades)

  5. When did this go live?????? I was waiting for it.
How stupid. One of the most popular chapters. You are printing money bro. Make 3000 of them. they will sell. fact.

    1. I thought the same thing myself, I knew it would be a race to get one so I sat there (logged in already) refreshing my browser until it became available. I placed my order, took a quick look at the other pre-orders, scrolled back up to the top of the page . . . aand gone! I understand the mechanics of demand causing a rush buy but I think that the powers that be at GW underestimated the popularity of Dark Angels compared to spess mehrines - assuming that there were 900 of each type of SM LE codex available? This I don't know.

  6. Who wants to bet the PFG and the Banner of Devastation is gone?

    2. Man butchered that last comment. So based on the iBooks preview, they both are gone. Displacer field is also gone and conversion field costs more points now

      Delete
    3. Fair enough tbh. We needed the PFG before because we fell short in so many ways, we needed to stay alive longer to bring equivalent firepower to bear.

Now we have pretty great firepower right from the off so I'm OK with losing the PFG. In happier news, all Sacred Standards are now 35pts!!! WUT!!!

      Delete
    4. I am a little worried that because of the points drop the Sacred Standards won't be as good, until I see the rules for them I'm not getting my hopes up. I liked running the PFG with guard allies to protect the tanks so I'm going to miss that. Bikes have also been removed from wargear, so unless the unit entry has it as an option no more bike librarians :( which I love and use as a warlord frequently

    5. Sacred standards and company banners being lumped together respectively could be a bad thing. It could mean the special versions are gone and we just get a generic version of each. It's happened before.

      Delete
    6. They specifically left the unique banners on the DA transfers sheet =)

      Delete
    7. That is a good point Thomas, while it is a possibility that they were just dumb we probably still have all three. I'm a little worried about nerfs though, dropping the points that much makes me think they got weaker in some way

      Delete
    8. I think the PFG had to go. It reduced Dark Angels to a tiny Allied formation way too often. With Azrael being (I guess) a LoW now as well he won't be giving out his 4++ to blob squads all the time now either.

      Delete
    9. It sounds like the banners may be streamlined and cheaper. But this is not so bad if you ask me. I enjoyed the effects but it usually meant my army relied on just one model to really make them work and that was just too fragile for me so maybe this is good in the longrun.

      Delete
    10. so someone over on B&C just said the new sacred standard just gives re rolls to morale within 12" and the unit carrying it gets relentless and counterattack

Which is pretty shit if true

      Delete
    11. Good thing i didn't have high expectations on this book.the loss of good unique wargear and the standards is a enormous let down. If there is one thing that GW does best , its disappointing its players. Glad i didn't waist my time or money on the limited ed crap sandwich.

      Delete
    12. Lmao, given the rest of the content Bft I think you're in the minority of DA players!

But I know what you mean, I'll kinda miss the Displacer Fields and the like.

  7. US pre-orders tend to go live at about 1pm Eastern or so now. If you wanna start the refresh dance, I'd figure starting around 12:30 may not be a bad idea.

    1. That's because 1 pm eastern is 10 am pacific so all GW stores in the US are open to accept a mad dash of pre orders
