No 40k for 4 Months! and Then Tau

So the latest rumor has there being no 40k for the next 4 months as Games Workshop pushes the Age of Sigmar. That would be quite the dry spell, and the longest we have had in a long time..... Would we even remember how to play 40k after 4 months?

Please remember that this is a rumor.

via Darnok on Warseer
one of my birdies just nudged me concering the "weeks, not months" thing. According to him/her/it, we'll see Tau in October, and no 40K until then. So... months indeed.

    3. As far as my own purchases were concerned, it seemed like GW's frantic release schedule may have actually hurt them, especially since they clustered a bunch of Imperium releases together.

One minute I was really excited about Skitarii and Cult Mechanicus and was already making plans to buy a large army. But then they released more Knights and a new codex, and suddenly I was getting ready to build a Knight army. Before I could get ramped up on either Mechanicus or Knights, they released Space Marines (my first army) and I found that I was more excited to build up my old army than any of the new ones.

With each new release, I lost enthusiasm for the previous one. I don't know how many people also felt that way, but maybe GW should have diversified their releases, breaking up 40K Imperium releases with Xenos and/or Fantasy.

    4. Yes I will say that the releases lost their appeal as each new one came out... But I didn't forget about them. I had to wait before I could buy some of them and it has Added more stuff to my very very long list of stuff I need to buy but I haven't spent any less than I normaly would because of this. In fact it means that several of my future pay checks are already spoken for :(

    5. Which makes things like limited releases even more annoying. people grab them up so they don't miss out, usually at the cost of whatever they were working on or planning to get in the future.

    7. Give me time to finish the mechanicus i have bought and save for more mechanicus.

Sadly i don't see myself buying any more fantasy for a long time...

    8. James- I sadly agree with you. With al these releases all the time, it absolutely makes it less of an occasion. I just bought the codexes for Skitarri, mechanicus, knights 2.0, and the new space marine book.... I ended up skipping buying any new models and just working on what I had at home. Im aso a bit bothered I got a blood angels codex only months ago and it is rather behind the new space marine book in so many ways.

    3. If the marine boxes are anything to go by, we can expect either the full options available to the squad or at least close to. So we'll probably get 1 of each weapon per crisis suit but not enough to double up and take 3 suits with 6 plasmas/fusions etc.

  7. Yeah, as a chaos player that's the final straw. I'm waiting for later Horus heresy volumes to come out with full traitor lists featuring Daemon primarchs and the whole shebangabang. Anything that I own that's not 30k compatible/convertable will simply be eBay'd.

    6. Yes the reg CSM dex is in a sad state, but there are alternatives out there. Personally I'm glad GW is taking a break from 40K for a while. Don't know how much longer my wallet could afford it. Not only because some of the recent releases are armies I play, but I like to get other armies codecies, etc. And read through them. For a second I thought that might now be impossible, but a full summer off will give me that chance.

      Delete
    9. Well... Dark Angels have been given the shaft for years and now they seem to have finally been given a descent codex. When Chaos get their turn I can see the same thing happening (I think Vehicle and Daemon Engine squadrons is a dead cert now)

I think GW is finally getting their act together with codex releases... Needless to say then that Tau will no doubt get even more powerful ... Strength D is almost guaranteed. Probably for Hammerhead Rail Guns.

      Delete
    14. Well the Tau have to keep up with Eldar somehow

      Delete
    15. Oh right yeah, cuz Strength D for Tau is sooooooo hard to imagine right?

Forgive me for thinking that a race that focuses solely on guns and massive firepower could ever have strength D weapons.

Why would Space Marines have strength D? They don't even have any weapons that look like they could even remotely be Strength D.

      Delete
    16. Can't a Thunderhawk take a D-Strength laser instead of a battle cannon?

      @Joseph
      That I can't answer.
With so many nationalities who visit here, and not knowing yours, I mistook your question.

Personally I see this as a good thing and can't figure out why people are angry after months of 40K. But that's just me.

      Delete
    17. Oh yeah, apart from the Thunderhawk Volcano cannon... So there you go, Space Marines already have strength D. Tau are probably next in line.

      Delete
    18. Yeah, all these things that may not even be relevant to you, or your army should be the reason you keep with it. I mean, come on! If you only play slaanesh and nurgle, that khorne daemonkin book and black legion book aren't totally for a completely different army!

That sentiment is asinine. They have been focusing on subfactions, not the army. The army is what has been suffering.

      Delete
    19. Yes Josh. GW have been kind enough to bless us Chaos players with crap supplements to go with our crap Codex.

Khorne Daemonkin was also fantastic and I can't wait to add it to my Nurgle army!

An update to the base Codex is what chaos players want. Daemonkin is great but it's like giving an Iron Hands guy a Blood Angle Codex.

    20. I could see tau getting str D. There definitely was a run of giving it to new armies, imperial stuff being an exception because they can ally knights so they already have in-faction str D.

      Delete
    21. The Tau already have D-access; it's on the AX-1-0 Tiger Shark. They're pretty much is almost the same boat as Marines, but they're not BBs with Knights.

Unless the Riptide gets a new weapon or firing mode I can't see it getting access to D-strength firepower as that's always been the Eldar's thing. The Tau bring a lot of good firepower, the Eldar focus on less quantity and more quality with their heavy units.

      Delete

      Delete
    23. Technically anyone can ally in Knights to get it.

When you say "a run" you mean, an axe & a random C'Tan power apart from Eldar? There's kind of a point there I suppose, but looking at Ad Mech who are about as shooty and inventive as the Imperium gets, they didn't get any access to str:D so I wouldn't use the "feel" of a race to judge their D-WORTH unless they've a history of Instant Death weapons knocking about. lol If anything, Hammerheads will get their Railguns bumped up from S10 AP1 to D, but I don't really see it happening to anything else?

      Delete
    24. Hammerhead Railguns would suffice. If they bumped Broadsides back to str10 that would be nice.

      Delete
    25. with the focus on 3-tank squadrons getting buffs, i could see hammerheads getting Strength D as a combined shot

  11. 4 months, so like 16 weeks with just fantasy / aos releases? Never. They may be focusing on it for a month but 40k is still responsible for like 2/3 of their profits, would be commercial suicide to not keep their biggest playerbase occupied with new stuff.

      Delete
    4. Well if Age of Sigmar keeps up with the aesthetic we have seen so far then I'm going to end up buying most of the stuff for use in 40k anyway! Those Sigmarites just beg to be used as Custodes, the armour is right and aside from maybe a gun added here or there, I don't need to change anything. Chaos is just Chaos... If it wears fancy armour, it's a Chosen, if it has no armour, it's a Cultist. That big monster even looks like a Hellbrute!

GW have appealed to a wider audience with AoS models, and while it may not appeal to die hard fans, if a lot of 40K people are in the same boat as me then GW will make a prophet on this release. I've already planned in the AoS box as part of my next order!

    7. I don't buy the 4 months straight rumour either.
I don't think 40k will get any codex releases for 3 months but it is very likely the rumour of a campaign box with chaos and dark angels is coming with another fantasy demon release. It's to easy for gw to capitalize on both games with a single model release.

      Delete
    8. I agree, GW needs the 40k sales to keep the stock holders happy. Another major drop if AoS bombs might not be survivable for management.

    11. I find a chaos/dark angels box unlikely. we've already got dark vengence!

      Delete
    12. I dont think you guys are thinking quite clearly. It does not matter if AoS bombs because they just dropped the #1 biggest selling codex and followed it up with another similar one. They have all the sales they need this quarter and will not resume with 40k releases until they need the stock holders to see constant profit again.

Its economics with GW not game design that they release by.

      Delete
    13. God damn Damo, you must always maximize your Prophet :)

      Delete
    14. Azrell... As much as this all looks to be quarter to quarter business, I assure you that yearly profits are more important.
Quarterly results are easier to explain away.
A yearly financial failure would be really bad news, especially with the increase release schedule. You can't blame a bad year on 1 or 2 bad releases anymore.

The UK financial year runs from 1st April to 31st March. The 2015/2016 results will be very heavily skewed by AOS. Yes the marine codex will give them a bit of a boost for the first few months but after that we should see some very telling numbers about whether or not AOS was successful.

      Delete
    15. Any slump can be explained by investment in AoS combined with winding down of a non-profitable gameline (fantasy). They're safe there.

The thing is, it isn't about profits really. GW has never really cared all that much about profitable individual lines. It is about control of your content. The reason they are spinning fantasy off instead of just modifying it to make it more successful, is that they can't copyright elves, orks, or dwarves in a fantasy setting. Notice these are the things missing from the new world's nations? They are very interested in protecting themselves from the stuff that happened with Chapterhouse and seeing a repeat of that. So they're isolating what they CAN copyright and what they CAN trademark and what they CAN patent. And they are aggressively moving toward that end.

  12. I think they should bring back Squats and squat Tau out of the 40k universe. Their design is closer to Anima Tactics than Grimdark of the Warhammer world.

Also removing a well loved race would just be killing off a big part of the player base (i.e. as did the Squats... But to a far lesser degree).

    12. There is nothing really Grim Dark about the Tau and that's the point. They are a new power in the galaxy, the total opposite of the near extinct Eldar.

They are the only "civilized" faction expanding, while the IoM is trying to hold the galaxy from the countless threat and as for the Eldar they are already pass that point and are merely remnant of a once great Empire.

I would never expect the Tau to look anything like the Imperium or another faction. They have not experienced anything remotely close to what the decaying yet enduring millennia long Imperium of Mankind has with multiple loss of technology and great war that destroyed and torn apart humanity.

    13. Good thing you're not making decisions on which armies are in or out. A lot of people like the Tau aesthetic over power armor on giant wolves or riding in sleighs.

    14. The Ultra-sleek modern aesthetic of the Tau is why I chose them as my first army for 40k. I had issues with the neo-fascist genetically-altered super gorillas, and the green army men.

Tau appeal to a different audience, but it's perfectly fine for you guys who don't like them to just play against your own kind.

Or just take the long blue railgun to the face like you are supposed to. :)

Oh, and aracersss, excellent point, people can hate on Tau all they like, it's not personal. Just clean the table and let them hate.

And honestly the whole possessed tax and underperforming units is ridiculous, I love them all and they do very well. They may not be op and slaughter everything without anyone dying but if they don't just whimper out like everyone says they do. Love my berserkers running into be it Necrons Eldar marines tau whatever it's so fun to have a big body pile at the end of the game of whatever models. But I'm the guy that doesn't care about winning, I just like the game to be fun, otherwise people just get mad at each other and argue, wish people didn't always feel they needed to win at everything. 11. I dunno. With the psychic changes 7th editionbrought, perils is more likely to happen. Especially if you roll a 6, giving your opponent 6 deny dice, forcing you to devote more dice to manifest. In my games, perils are very common. This makes Psyker reliant lists like Screamerstar and Daemon factory far too luck based to be fun. If they do release a Tzeentch Daemonkin book, it better have a solution to this, or its going to suck.

I really hope they dont have Daemonkin books planned for all 4 Chaos gods though. Chaos desperately needs an update, a cornerstone of the setting shouldnt be left out of the party for this long. Its inexcusable and only supports the claim that GW cares nothing at all for the condition of the game.

      Delete
    12. Don't know why you said crossing the board costs half the army, you get 2 blood points per unit killed with demonkin since if characters die in any way the confer a blood point, allowing you to bring some lovely bloodletters or fleshhounds in real quick right by them, even if they die before they do anything it takes fire off your force marching up. Crossing the board has never been a problem for me so far and most opponents make the mistake of killing all the bait units in my list giving me at least 6~7 blood points on my first turn, throw out some bloodletters and give fnp to your slaughtercult and you can get to the fight quickly. Then again I've never played competitively so people are probably smarter about not completely killing off bait units in tournaments. I'll still have fun playing khorne demonkin, first army was khorne always khorne :)

      Delete
    3. Lol @ 'feedback'. They dont give a rats ass about game balance. 40k is a tool to make money, nothing more. I see no evidence at all that GW takes the quality of the game/rules into condideration whatsoever.

  18. Huh. I mean fair enough, GW has to promote their new system, but I was hoping for a new Chaos Codex at some point soon. Certainly before they re-did friggin' Tau!

And while I'm on the subject of Codices, can GW re-write that appalling Dark Eldar book from the ground up? Chaos players complain about their book, but that Dark Eldar Codex was just utterly dreadful, with like 3 minor buffs drowning in a sea of nerfs and silly design decisions that made no sense (Fear weapons, Solarites getting Venom Blades but not Archons etc.).

    3. There's some things I like in the DE stuff. The Coven supplement offers a really nice set of options to increase the versatility of your force immensely. Having a mobile army with several really hard hitting melee formations is amazing. Could use love in the base book though.

    2. Want to see the auxillaries expanded. Kroot Merc mini-dex (but also in the main codex), redo the Vespid sculpts (they're looking dated), and maybe throw in some new ones.

    3. And I am really curious about who will become our new Lord of War??? Riptide, Aun'va, Hammerhead???

    4. My guess? They'll get a new garg monstrous creature lord of war. Some super duper duper suit. Crisis suit inside a riptide!

    5. How can Hammerhead become a LoW? Shadowsun, Aun'Va or Farsight are much more apt to become our LoW.

Anyway, I was expecting the codex to arrive by august... darn it!

    1. Yes, because all we have is cover saves! Our power armour and Terminator armour has all literally vanished!

    2. It has in most cases. There are now not only more ap3 shooting attacks available per model then every before, but low ap shooting weapons now out number the higher ap weapons by an almost 2-1 margin. So more options and more of them.

Then add in how silly the cover mechanic is in general and boom you get a repeat of 6th edition where cover does not matter and armor is just extra points per model.

    4. Thomas, you pretty much get more bang for your bucks by having no armor or just 5+ or 6+ than 2+ or even 3+ armor. Invu with FNP just rocks currently and there is a good reason why Inquisition Henchmens rock with their 15 pts Storm Shield meat shields.

Henchmen Warband with two Space Apes, Psyker, three Meat Shields and three Plasma Cannon servitors lead by Psyker Inquisitor carrying an Conversion Beamer is more devastating than a Devastator Squad.

I run one of those units as allies with old GK dex and added second one after Inquisition dex and 7th edition.

Twin linked Rending Plasma Cannon with extra 12" range + Conversion Beamer and two Multimelta/Lascannon/Heavy Flamer is just something that will make your opponent do some weird faces...

    5. To be fair, the DA update is pretty much Codex: Ravenwing. Which is built around a cheesy 2/3+ re-rollable jink. So yea, ignores cover armies are hard counters to DA.

  22. This is fine. 40k rocked it for about 18 months straight. After a helping of Age of Sigmar, I'm sure we'll see more of an alternating rotation. Tau, Orks, AM, and Tyranids will all come soon after.

    1. But I thought Age of Sigmar was 40K?

      ;)

Joking aside, I sincerely hope Chaos get some love. Dark gods know we need it.

    2. Orks? But they already got a 7th codex, right?

  23. October is traditionally the month of Spooky Releases: End Times, Chaos, and Vampire Counts in years passed. Here's hoping it's actually something similar this year as well.
