    4. Every book since and including Necrons has been great, and/or better than its previous incarnation. Top to bottom. That isn't going to suddenly change with Chaos (or whatever pet army of the week some random players are worried about).

Seeing that Space Marines were knocked out of the park, I am absolutely chomping at the bit to see Tau, AM, Tyranids, Orks, etc, get the same treatment. Which they will. Better internal balance, more build options, powerful units and wargear that play to the much improved Tactical Objectives system; yet no army is "perfect" as all have a weakness. And they should - all good games are built that way.

    8. here's what's gonna happen: Codex Chaos Space Marines and Codex Chaos Daemons will be retconned from existence. Instead, "bad guy" players will get Codex Daemonkin Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch and Slaanesh.

      Delete
    9. Although I doubt they'll be retconned, I do worry that the CSM codex will be delayed in favor of the demonkin books. I'm just not a fan of mono-god builds. Chaos undivided needs some love after the 6th ed codex.

      Delete
    10. There will probably be an undivided book with no cult troops, after all the daemonkin books are released. Sucks because it's unlikely that bezerkers will get better anytime soon

  3. Dark Angel Tactical squad. Calling it.

    1. Unlikely. Three reasons:

      1) We don't have unique Tac Squads.
      2) Unlike the new Lib & Chap there's no pics of new robes in Vision leaks.
      3) A codex is usually the last release of a monthly theme (in this case Marines) so once pre-orders for this are up that *should* be it for Marine-specific models.

      :(

      Delete
    2. Also: Just got an upgrade sprue thingy. (So did SW and BA... which made less sense)

      Delete
    3. @Mauler: BA didn't have unique Tac squads either until their last codex let them take Heavy Flamers. DA is the only one that doesn't have a Tac Squad or equivalent box. I don't think we are getting one, but it's not because we don't need one.

      Delete
    4. Why do we need one? Honest question?

We have an upgrade sprue from blingage. We have no more options than normal Tacts do. DA in robes are Veterans and thus should only be one per squad if upgraded to a Vet Sarge. And we already have a Vets box?

What I have just noticed though, is that in addition to the old Terminator Librarian being "No longer available" the Terminator Captain is NLA too...

  4. That banner on the character looks sculpted to me. Seem to remember the model only coming with a bare 2nd edition banner pole. Plastic re-make maybe?

    1. They made the sculpted banners for Ezekiel, Azrael, and Brother Bethor back in 4th edition.

    2. Ah, no worries. Not a DA player myself, so dont follow the models all that closely

      Delete
  5. Im guessing no new models besides the chaplain, new rules for jetfighter, talon and vengeance will make it seem like we are getting three new units if they make them remotely useable. I wouldnt be surprised to see a 40-50 point drop on the jetfighter or even +1 str on the black sword missiles so they could actually pen the flyers they are meant to gain.superiority over.

    1. And a bunch of new Formations and new special rules for a slew of units/Formations. I know of three units that are getting special rules off the top of my head...

      Delete
    2. For formations I'd look at the formations in pandorax as a good starting point both flier and speeder formations there maybe the apocalypse formation too?

      Delete
    3. In general I am against formations as they kind of spit in the face of the points system that they work so hard to establish. Giving people rules for free or upgrades/models. That said seeing as everyone is getting formations now I will jump on the band wagon and have my deathwing eagerly awaiting their formation. I think a flier formation will appear as GW hasnt exactly been raking in money from DA fliers.

      Delete
    4. I like formations, I think they're an interesting way of using old models and refreshing armies. I think the problem is more that they're spammable too easily, but then 7th also states that it's up to you as to how you limit things. Maybe one per 1000 bracket of your total?

      Delete
    5. I used a Cult Mech one so my DA could have some grav cannons. I like that formations make it easier to ally in the units you want, for example my admech would love to ally in a whirlwind squadron with some speeders but would not want any marines or a marine hq like a CAD or allied would require.

      Delete
    6. @Timtertay: It doesn't spit on the face of anything. It's a reward for building within a flavorful theme. Besides, if Space Marines are an indication, there will be rewards simply for taking vehicle squadrons WITHOUT formations. In either case, the little bonus rules have gone a long way to fix units that there was otherwise no incentive to play before. Since Necrons, this has been a great way of both unlocking and balancing armies.

I expect the DA fliers to be much improved; and since they are unique to DA's, the army won't be getting the Stormraven. Just as Wolves have their own. The special snowflake Knights will also likely be cheaper.

      Delete
    7. Spit in the face was harsh, especially as often points dont really match usefullness (landspeeder vengeance springs to mind). But i guess the problem with formations is not everyone has them yet.

Ive found in my games deathwing knights arent that badly costed, black knights could lose a couple of points though. Currently 42 but faq has command squad ones at 40 so i can see that happening.

      Delete
    8. Or you know the point of Calgar in Terminator Armor VS a Wraith Knight. It's what 10 or 20 points in difference... and I know who I would bring to a fight :P

  7. Really hope that Independent Characters on bikes unlock Ravenwing as troops, I want an allied detachment without having to field jetbike boy. Or at least a formation.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thats a ridiculous dream, no one makes anything troops like some hq's used to. They'll probably just get the option of a FOC with lots of fast attack choices or a mix of fast attack and elites. Maybe they'll even get two, one for deathwing one for ravenwing

      Delete
    2. I bought my brother the codex spacemarines book for his birthday and was intrigued by their detachment that is made up of formations, as in formations being allocated as command, core and auxilary or what ever the third one is, if Dark Angels got something similar then you wouldnt require FOC shenanigans like we have needed in the past.

    5. Indeed they do Chalkybot, and they only have to be in units of three now. Plus it can even be a Librarian or Chaplain. So hardly a ridiculous dream Gavin (as long as GW don't shaft DAs...).

    6. Have to admit as a Dark Angels player I've been a bit smug recently to my Blood Angels and Space Wolf friends who are upset about a standard dread having more attacks than theirs and scouts with sniper rifles having BS 4 for everyone except BA. Not to mention all the new formations and squadroned vehicles. I just said to them that feeling, the feeling of being shafted by codex space marines coming out after your dex, that is the feeling of a Dark Angels player. Suddenly they understand my 4th/ 5th ed pain.

      Delete
    7. As a side note I do actually love our 6th ed codex (except the disappointing fliers)

      Delete
    8. @Timtertay: Then you will be crazy/obsessed in love with the new one...

@Chalkybot: Yes, but that is a 1-off in 7th. Taking a certain HQ to unlock something as Troops is lazy design, and proof of the internet's lack of creativity compared to GW. Thankfully GW hasn't gone in that direction where every army has that. It's just pretty much Marines on a bike (since Necrons). Even then, there are plenty of incentives to play other builds now (unlike their 6th edition codex).

The detachment/formation set up encourages a huge variety of build options that allow you to build an army in any configuration you want. Dark Angels will get the same treatment. Chaos will get the same treatment (as they did with Khorne). Tau, AM, Tyranis, etc will as well.

      Delete
    9. I expect the Ravenwing and Deathwing to be formations in the new codex, so I bet you will have to take those to get them as allies.

The game has never been more unbalanced and you're praising balance. New formations are rewarding insane alpha strikes that can't be answered and these are a "huge variety of build options."

@ BftBG: you win at the internet for now.

@ thomas: your not alone there buddy i'd like to see this imaginary person as well...

@ timertay: i think you will see something like that if space marines are anything to go by, also expect a few snazzy formations that make certain units OP (or not shit). remember as doogle always says: GW is smart, they will market the dex so it moves unsold kits.....this is a given. if it means DA are somewhat decent then i think GW will give DA players a break and buff or give more rules or ones that make sense to this faction.

    18. Auswin - What McDoog means is that from Necrons onwards there is a semblance of relative balance. Necrons are tough, Eldar are flighty, Harlies are tricksy, KD are choppy & summony, Ad Mech are shooty with assault support & Marines are tactically flexible. Every army has it's fluff-based more-extreme edge now without things being boring.

Although, I'd love to see the results of 50 or so games using just armies from Necrons onwards. In my group when we field new armies the guys with the older 7/6E books have to work harder than they would've previously. I've yet to see Eldar pitted against KD, but I figure that the Eldar's killing capacity will balance things against the Daemonkin's blood bonuses. Do stuff, WK, people want to see...

      Delete
    19. We have a really good mix of players (15-20) and the trend we've seen is pretty clear.

Up until Eldar the game was in a great place. Necrons were strong, but they could be beaten -- we didn't see the OP Necron madness others seem to have experienced. Honestly, it was the first time for a long time I felt the game was close to being balanced.

Eldar ruined all of that. They haven't lost at the store, as far as I know, and Eldar players are comping their lists down to allow games to be somewhat close. Ad mech/skitarri is strong, but much like Necrons it's not unbeatable.

Too early for SM, but the few games this weekend they were unbeaten when fielding a full company or the new alpha strike formation.

40K is not in a good place now at all. Perhaps it will be when all the codexes are updated again, but from my perspective they almost had a balanced edition and ruined it.

      Delete
    20. I kind of agree Auswin. While I do think that Crons have some utter cheese out there, you're spot on about Eldar. I've honestly lost count of the number Eldar players I know who are selling their armies because, and I quote, "it's just not fun to win that way."

Hell, these dudes purposefully handicapped themselves and ran mostly aspect warriors, Guardians, Fire Prisms, War Walkers etc. Nary a Wraithknight or Scatterbike unit to be seen. They still routinely *destroyed* the opposing player to the extent that neither they nor their opponent was having that elusive thing we call "fun."

I'd like to ask GW how they consider that 1) Good game design and 2) a good way to encourage people to buy models.

    21. I gave my eldar away when the 6th ed codex came out.

      Delete
    22. @mauler. We illustrated the gulf between new 7th and 6th pitting the oldest 6th dex chaos against the newest 7th dex's craftworlds and ad mech in 2500 point game. We had to end at turn three because the chaos were essentially tabled.

      Delete
    23. Tim - but that's a gulf that most players recognise anyway so I'm not sure what the point was? Chaos Marines are widely regarded as one of the weaker books and Eldar + Ad Mech is just brutal to put them up against and that outcome is pretty likely. I'm never sure if I come across as patronising, and I hope that I don't, but anyone who is familiar with the game who has picked up the most recent books will tell straight off that there has been a clear, intended power hike that seems to be getting carried over as GW update the 6th edition books. Everyone should get their turn in time. Admittedly while they're waiting it's a bit of a raw deal and as for FAQs to help out...I genuinely have no idea where most of those docs are.

Auswin - That's a fair observation; I agree that before Necrons most of the books were pretty even. The problem that GW have now is that 1) they tell their customers sod-all (which is something that still winds me up) but mainly 2) they have a such a wide range of 40k products alone that it's simply impossible to release everything new in parallel. Think about the logistics for that, for a bit. When your local place gets new stock for that week how much do they actually get? Ten boxes & twenty codices in total? If that? Now consider the demand if two, three, four or even all of the remaining factions had their new books released at once, all the normal logistics multiplied by the factions remaining. "Sorry sir, we only got one of that item, unfortunately you were the second customer through the door and missed out". Ow.

Personally I think that GW are doing it the only way they can; each army in sequence as quickly as possible...and even then people aren't happy. Too much changed, not changed enough, not updated soon enough, updated too soon...glad I don't work for them lol :P

      Delete
    24. No worries, not patronising. We just looking at the extent of codex creep and how different the game has become. Most 6th ed books would have ended the same.

      Delete
    25. @ Mauler: simple fix: release dex's independent of model releases, bam problem solved. the miniatures are what get us off our arses and get motivated to buy a dex we already own (by we, i mean everyone but not including me) minus a few tweaks here and there. if they made a digital library where they just tweak changes here and there and used this for a STC for future books then logistics is no longer a nightmare.

of course GW will never think of this though.

      Delete
    26. TG - That's not a bad solution as that's what GW used to do and we ended up with units with no models which lead to the Chapterhouse Debacle :(

This may cheer people up though...lol

  8. As a guy whor primary army is supposed to be BA, but also has DA and CSM, does anyone here think maybe GW will FAQ the scouts and dreads for BA and SW?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. based on FAQ releases of the past......not likely.....that's speculation though not inside knowledge. they might if kits start to become less sold and more sitting collecting dust then that chance increases dramatically.

but overall i wouldn't expect them anytime soon.

      Delete
    2. I mean... So they're basically insinuating that the few special chapters are less than the other 950 or so? I guess they want everyone to buy the vanilla dex, and create allies to match? IDK. I had quit playing BA, 'uz the fifth ed book started go seem so out with points costs. Then the new dex, which is ok, UT not wonderful... Now this.

      Delete
    3. i would say yes. but i don't know for sure. the vanilla marines tend to have more of everything it would appear. from rules/fluff and other stuff (formations etc) to scouts and dreads....it'd be great if every dex was reasonably balanced between each faction.

      Delete
    4. also no need to apologize for typo's ;)

    5. I wouldnt count on an FAQ dark angels went all the way through 4th n half way through 5th with inferior storm shields (4++ in combat) and apothecarys before the 4th ed codex got an faq.

Id expect most gaming groups will just say its commonsense though and not require an faq. Why would a BA dread have less attacks than a standard one?

      Delete
    6. That's what I'd expect, too, but some of these guys I play with love those exploitations.

      Delete
  9. This isn't even about balance... Changing the stat line of shared units in one dex but not the others makes no sense. Its changing the meta, which I don't mind, but it'd be like if the new DA dreads are suddenly monstrous creatures, and their tactical marines all have a 4++.
