Chaos Cultists: Rules, Box Set, and a Pic!!!!

We have a last minute set of rules for the Cultists before I head out the door. This is from a playtest set, and I can tell you that there are a couple of changes from this to the final copy. Have fun.......
Please remember that these are rumors.

via Faeit 212 (a Must Remain Anonymous Source)
There are two changes between this version and the print copy, but they're not that big.

Oh, and cultists are getting a plastic box of 10 that comes with 10 sets of auto pistol / ccw arms, 10 autoguns, 2 shotguns, 1 heavy stubber, 1 flamer, 1 grenade launcher, 1 icon (with several top options), 1 power axe, 1 power maul and a bunch of bits to put here and there (such as frag grenades and trophies).  Only thing I didn't see was a power sword.

  1. Cool.

But what about CSM? Cultists suck.

    1. What!? Cultists are like Ork Grots only they're better! As long as they are a troop choice, these guys are going to be AMAZING.

      Delete
    2. They're a cheap meatgrinder unit that can stall assaults and screen your expensive CSM units. Try thinking beyond just the stat line and think of the ways in which cultists can be useful working with the rest of the army.

      Delete
    3. Chaos Space Marines will have virtually the same stat line they have always had. There's no need to change them, really.

The Cultists are grinder gold, and get cheaper for each guy after 10. Space Marines don't get those guys to shield them.

      Delete
    4. They don't get cheaper for each guy after 10 - they're all 3 points per model, but the starting unit price includes a 10 point champion upgrade

    5. if khorne icons really do give rage that could be 110 points for not-guardsmen who have 4 attacks on the charge. and can fire before they charge too. that tarpit has some teeth.

    1. It said: 1 icon with several top options.

Probably be like Chaos Marines where you have one big stick and then have each icon to choose from and stick on the top.

      Delete
    2. But the options only list an Icon of Chaos - no god-specific icons

If you want Nurgle cultists, there's always Typhus apparently turning them into zombies

This site is genuinely a great place to come and find the current info without having to trawl though pointless rants (pot, kettle, black maybe ?) especially now that 1st business has fizzled out :)

And we all know that the CSM codex will be coming out next, because it will be written by Mat Ward, who has fallen out of love with Grey Knights, and is now loving Chaos. So, not only are they next, but will sport a leader a powerful as Kaldor Drago.... :@P

  8. The fonts are wrong. The box round the stats should be faded and all the stat titles like WS should be bold. The squad title at the top should also be in a larger font to everything else.

Grenade and launcher is not on the same line. Close combat weapon is shown once with a hyphon (close-combat) and once as two seperate words with capitals (Close Combat), which shows no consistency.

Smells like bad juju to me.

    3. I think it's fake.

      Additionally to what KitKat said:

      ChapterChampion without a space inbetween?

      "Light Armor"?
no special rules except "servants of chaos", which sounds a bit fishy in itself?

As far as I can remember it never says "may include up to 20 MORE cultists".

"One cultist may have glory..." no. this isn't a proper list entry.

Sorry, I think I could write a better fake than this one.

      Delete
    4. Guys it's a fucking draft sheet. Of course it's going to look funky. They're just throwing this shit on paper to see if it checks out; and so they can play test it.

      Delete
    5. haveing play tested for other companies before, play test rules aren't always pretty to look at. in at least one case I just got a MS word document.

      Delete
    6. I don't buy the whole it's a draft sheet. If you're going to draft it like this, there's still no excuse to not use the standard template which I'm sure they have saved, rather than waisting time making your own, you just wouldn't do it.

Also the Heavy Stunner and Flamer upgrade option are seperate which is just confusing to anyone who hasn't seen the DV set. Why would those options not be available whatever your cultists load out?

Still stinks to me, but I could be wrong. It just feels wrong, more like logical guesses at what will be included

  9. I have a question. Where the hell are the people who brought us CSM codex rumors before 6th Ed came out?

Remember the person telling us the special rules like "unwieldy, deny the witch, and Soul Blaze" before we even heard about them via 6th ed rumors?

      Delete
    2. It don't think it will be much different. Cultist should be crappy, cheap and pretty simple. Probably a couple of options here and there, but the profile, the cost and the amount of damage they can make will probably be close...

      Delete
    3. It's do damage, right? Not make... F***

  11. Looks pretty basic, but too basic really. Seems like someone hobbled together something out of the Guard codex with something out of the current CSM Codex, and then added some other vague SR's to make it sound legit.

But I'd buy it if it was just for playtesting before the final draft. This does reflect a lot of what I'd expect from this squad.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I don't understand why everybody is so amazed by those cultists. Meatshield... with no other use, hardly believe I will add them to army list ever (fluff purpose - egh?), summoned/allied daemons fulfill that role much better.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. BTW, my favorite picture from last WD is one with cultists charging Deathwing squad. Chomping bloody terrain delaying terminator squad for 1 turn.

      Delete
    2. They are a lot cheaper than daemons and deploy normally, without deepstriking, enabling them to function as a deployable and movable meatshield. That and the fact that enough of them will be a major pain to remove if a certain character can make them plague zombies.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, that's a known an valid point of view, I won't argue with it. But personally I prefer a bit different type of tarpit.

      Delete
    4. Well, I see them as being wonderfully useful as objective holders. I fully intend on fielding at least one squad of 30, and more likely 2 squads of 20. 1 with heavy stubbers and 'Nade launchers. One with flamers and shot guns. It'll be epic for sure.

      Delete
    5. they'll make perfect bubblewrap, too numerous to shoot holes in and charge through and it will take a while to kill 25% of them and trigger a morale test. They'll give cover to expensive troops behind, delay assaults, block enemy flyers, all sorts of uses.

      Delete

    2. also got to realize that we don't ever really see the ruff drafts so we don't know exactly what they look like and it looks to me if this is real than for some reason they are making the chaos codex like the dreaded smurfs codex (in points and unit style) which i personally liked not having to taking champions so i can fit more people in my army.

      Delete
    3. Well, why would a playtest sheet have a reference to the unit's background and rules? I'm not buying this one! :)

    Replies
    1. yeah, but look at it compared to Imperial Guard - drop 2 points to lower armour save by 1? Seems likely this is how they'll be priced. TBH you should never really take guardians in an Eldar army...

  16. 4pts a model though, thats as cheap as grots I think, you could have 100 of these buggers at only 400 pts.

    4. Yup, that champ in my army is gonna have brass balls the size of grapefruits. He'll challenge any and every character that walks by. Either they fight wasting their attacks on a cheapy model, or they cower wasting their attacks! "My nameless cultist challenges your land raider costed HQ... Do you accept?"

      Delete
  18. Since when did codices put such wargear options so informally as "May have the glory of carrying an icon"? This seems too draft-like to be something that's only one or two changes away from completion, unless of course the last thing GW does is make its language formal in army books.

    1. If rumours are true they're 4 points a model. Cheap way to get bodies on to the field. Also with enough you can run CC cultists that just drown your opponent in attacks. Imagine 120 points per 30 cultists. You will have so many bodies.

      Delete
    2. Bring on the zombie apocalypse is all I say!.. If rumours hold true of course.

Saying that, the game will be flooded with zombies if this turns out to be true I suspect. What player will pass up the chance to field as many as possible at those point costs? I think I can hear that Death Guard Bandwagon revving up again.

    4. The best way to use cultists will be much like how they're used in the fluff, as an inital cheap first wave to whittle down and tie up enemy units before the Marines engage.

      Delete
  23. Flamers and Shotguns for me, probably with the pistol option. That was what I was going to do with IA7. Not sure what to give the champ. Part of me based on the Eye of the Gods table wants to run a lot of kitted out champs, but honestly what can this guy kill even with a power weapon?

The rumor of rhinos being marked and only undivided rhinos being able to carry all marked troops plus the rumor that Chosen can't infiltrate bothers me more. These guys will be something new to convert and paint, but I'm not sure I'll run 2 squads, probably just one bigger blob, maybe 20 for dual flamers, but probably just over 10.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Dang people saying they might not use them in your lists?? How could you not! 100 points for 30 models?! Especially with the decrease in armor, these guys could leafblow things away for much cheaper than guard.

    ReplyDelete
  25. If the point costs are true, cultists will be awesome! An aeigis defense line placed in a straight line with 2 of your objectives and two 30 man cult squads holding them for a mere 250 points! How is that not awesome? That's 60 shots at 24" or 120 at 12". The usr probably has to do with the rumored warlord rules. I tend not to waste too many points on scoring units, and instead play a lot of specialist units. The cultists are definitely going in my lists.

  29. I would love for this to not be a fake, but yeah.... as others have stated that "champion" is apparently worth 13 points while the rest of his squad is only 3 per model. Further, the fixed price for grenades with a variable squad size is non-standard, the wording (especially the icon) is quite bad for a company that's based in England... you know, the home of the english language.... And speaking of the icon, I'm really curious how they can balance out the points costs of the various god-specific buffs to allow for a catch-all 10-point price for an icon. Assuming icons work the same as they do now paying 10 points for IoS for a +1I just can't compete with paying 10 points for IoN for a +1T buff.

    I'm not buying this.

  31. Well , unless someone gives them fearless , they are crap. They whould die like files on any assault, will be easily made fall back and have ridiculous weapons.Exacly like guard blobs without commissars

Also their fire range is small. If you take more than 1-2 squads, each squad whould guive cover to the enemy. Also, you have to consider terrain.
Morover, it will be difficult to assault wth a decent number of them . They sound much better than what they are .Also consider that guards do not take a FOC for each squad, while coultists do , and small squads are better if you are guard , unless you have commissars ecc.

    1. Restricting flamers and GLs to the Pistol/CCW squads and Heavy Stubbers to the Autogun squads is unnecessarily restrictive. Why shouldn't we be able to field 30 man cultist squads with 3 flamers and 27 autoguns? Charge me, Bro!

    2. Buy a shotgun for 5 points when IG can get them for free? What kind of bull is that?

    3. What does the Icon of Chaos do?

    4. Can we dedicate a squad to one of the Chaos Gods?

    5. Is there anyway to make them fearless with an IC or attached leader?

  34. I smell a load of BS on this one. It says Page 25. Codexes since some of the last 4th edition versions to come out have been loaded up with fluff/unit specific info for the first 30 pages or so,then modelling tips in the middle, followed by special rules, wargear etc and then the actual army list followed by the summary at the end. So to have this army list entry on page 25 either hints at a gross change in codex format or is just plain made up nonsense(which I'am more inclined to believe).

  35. At 3pts a model, they vastly surpass Guardsmen, being de-facto Guardsmen with 1pt less in Armour. They flat-out out-do Conscripts by miles, as their stats don't get crapped on for cost reduction. Not to mention they completely oust Tyrant's Legion Auxiliaries to boot, with equivalent cost buying auxiliaries with WS and BS 2, and a lower Ld.

I care little where this is sourced from, but how the fuck is this fair? Do D6 of them get consumed per turn due to meddling with otherworldly powers or what?
