Tau bits seem to keep coming out of the woodwork, and here is the very latest on the Tau Happenings. Included are stealth and crisis suits, fire warriors, the sky ray, and equipment.

Just to be aware, these are mentioned as being very early rumors (ie playtesting).

Caveat: Many of these are said to be "in process".  Don't look for *exact match* rules to survive to the printed codex.

Crisis Suits: Look for more posable new models. Unit keeps its high level of customization, with several upgrades to stat lines possible. New flakk missile pods. New combi-kit includes Broadside parts.

Stealth Suits: Models unchanged. Have stealth, (obviously), plus optional drone granting shrouding.

Sky Ray: Last edition's trainwreck gets a new lease on life. Flakk missiles, plus has orbital bombardment (much like SM version, but with a lingering effect).

Fire Warriors: Same nasty gun. Still BS:3, but with a Shas'O can upgrade unit to BS:4.

Equipment
Drones: Any drone can be used for Look Out Sir rolls for any model in the unit they are attached to.

Markerlights: A single hit increases BS of all other units targeting the victim by +1. Multiple markerlights have no additional effects. OUCH - look out for possible BS:5, Fire Warrior volleys now! Markerlights improve snapfire against marked flyers to 5+ instead of 6, but must first hit the flyer with a 6 themselves.

Networked Markerlights: A longer range twin linked version. Vehicles only.

  1. Would really love more customizeable/poseable Crisis Suits. I would buy more Suits if they made the suit more streamlined looking to replace the 20 that I do own.

  2. Yeah. I'm really trying to decide right now if I want to hold on to the 3000-ish points of Tau I have or sell them so I can have a clean slate (and a reserve of cash) when the codex and the new models arrive.

I hate to give up a fully painted army and start over, but on the other hand I hate the current battlesuit models even more.

    1. All but 3 of my Crisis have Paulson Games Mecha Heads. Seven of my Crisis Suits are modified on how they look and 4 are heavily modified even more. Now if I include Farsight and his retinue I have 28 models and Farsight himself is heavily modified.

    2. My plan is to use the new suits as Shas'vre models and keep all of my old ones just to help out on the fluffy side, keep my models and to convince me to buy the new suits. That is, if you like the old ones enough to keep them.

  3. You can get BS5 fire warriors now. If anything its a bit of a markerlight nerf. Granted you can use it for all subsequent units but other effects like cover reduction are lost. Makes pathfinders pointless in their current guise.

    1. Agreed Markerlights just need a tweak here and there to make them work. ie Remove the bit about Target Priority and Pinning tests and possibly add the ability to make a squad's fire twin-linked.

    2. For what it's worth, I think pathfinders would make for a decent anti-air option. One of their markerlights is bound to hit, then fire with a whole unit of broadsides. Three rerollable S10 AP1 shots that hit on 5+ mean a dead flyer.

  4. Lingering effects of orbital bombardments - more bookkeeping - Yaay!

    1. I hear you. 40k already doesn't handle persistent effects terribly well, more bookkeepink will be a joy to handle.

  5. Loosing the ability to reduce cover saves with markerlights would be a major nerf! Hope that's either false or made up for elsewhere.

Similarly stealth suits currently get stealth and shrouded, so again this rumour seems to nerf them. Aren't new codexes supposed to be more powerful not less?

    1. I see this comment allot with no basis... Where does it say reduction effects are gone?

    2. @Joe: where does it say that "new codexes [are] supposed to be more powerful not less"? That's been a part of the problem for years, power-creep. It feels like GW is trying emphasize -more flexible-, and not necessarily more powerful than the previous codex. And, more "balanced" across codices, but that's very subjective and does not mean that every army gets the same toys that all (or most) of the other armies get. One can achieve balance by introducing things that are new but not necessarily the same... Just MHO, of course... :-)

    3. Or one can nerf actual units so you MUST buy the new ones...

None of it seems that great apart from the Crisis which sounds alright and the Sky Ray which sounds a bit OTT.

  8. I'm hoping to have a primarily Kroot oriented army because lets face it, they are the Predators of 40k and there are sooooo many conversion opportunities with them!

    1. Kroot are pretty beast. I've kitbashed mine with a few lizardmen parts to make them look even more awesome.

    2. Yeah, I've picked up another unit of Kroot myself recently.

The Predator films are some of my favourite sci-fi work (some more than others, mind) so I'm more than pleased to see tall, tribal hunters based on them in 40k. Could do with a higher tech level though ;)

    3. The "predator" idea could have been really GREAT if they wouldn't have given them parrot-like faces and low tech weapons. It could have been really nice to have taller elite soldiers with high tech weapons... real hunters, not that joke.

  9. The saddest thing about all these Tau rumors now i that it pushes Tau back to 3rd 1/4 2013 instead of 2nd 1/4.

  10. Well, the Markerlight upgrade fits well with the Mont'ka and Kauyon approaches, though i believe Orks and Tyranids will cry Nacho-Cheese when they face 3 full squads of Fire Warriors with Shas'o's and then this.

This would imply that the current 4+ pathfinder squads would mainly be used for shooting at flyers and the networked vehicle versions would be used for making other units +1 BS.
