We are getting closer to the release for Death From The Skies, although its very odd, that no one has any additional information coming out with it. February 16th is supposed to be the date on it, and yet just silence. Below is the only little bit of information I could really dig up about this release that is only a couple days away.

Can confirm guys, definitely going ahead, nothing new in it just a compilation of all the flyer rules into one handy supplement, supposed to be au $35 so for every one else about half that price lol. Storm ravens are definitely able to be taken for Space Marines and Black Templar, bu that's the only change.

  1. I honestly can't see this book being a simple rules update/clarification. With around 70 reported pages there have to be new fliers in the book, if there aren't any new fliers than this book will end up being a complete waste of time after the new Tau and Eldar codexes are released. I do want to get this book but if there are no new fliers then I will give it a pass. Also as a Space Marine player I have to say we do not need the Storm Raven and I am confused as to why GW decided to give it to us (mostly because they haven't caved to whinners on anything before).

    1. very valid point, why cave in now? very fishy very fishy indeed

    2. GW have decided to give it to us SM players to sell more overpriced stormraven kits. Simple as that...

    3. Didn't the old Eldar Starcannon get nerfed solely because of the mass amounts of people complaining about it?

    4. Honestly, I'm never going to allow my opponent to use the Storm Raven unless it is in his codex. This is a supplement and I am going to treat it as such. You want to buy a Storm Raven just for this? Fine.

      Delete
    5. The Storm Talon isn't in our codex either, do you let your opponents use that?

      Delete
    6. Storm Talon is in the digital version of the codex. For all we know, the Storm Raven will be added in to the digital version as well, therefore making it an codex option.

      Delete
    7. So now blood angels are now -1 unique unit. Might aswell make sanguine guard available to space marines too!

      Delete
    8. wow a lot of whining n' crying. I like the addition of the Storm Raven, it gives me a transport option for my Raven Guard that isn't on the ground or from forgeworld.

      Delete
    9. Yeah
But nothin points to New Units.

      Delete
    10. Why not just take a Baneblade? Oh wait, that's only for the Apocalypse supplement, just like Stormravens will only be available to Codex:Spacemarines in the Skies supplement.

Besides White Dwarf Chapter Approved and Forgeworld, GW has no history of releasing supplements which majorly augmented existing codex in standard games.

    11. The Stormraven going to Vanilla Marines is just crap. Vanilla Marines have a flyer, they don't need another. Also why do they think Vanilla Marines would need both the Stormraven and Stormtalon, but BAs don't? Why don't BAs deserve two flyers? All this is going to do is make more people want to play their BAs as Red Vanilla Marines.

Honestly I'm with Tyson, I won't be allowing my opponents to use the Stormraven for Vanilla Marines outside of this suppliment unless GW make it a part of their actual codex, then I just won't play against Vanilla Marines, it's that simple. It's our hobby/game and we can choose who we play.

      Delete
    12. I wouldn't want to play you if that is how you are going to treat your opponent either. I don't see how one army being able to use a new model makes things any more unfair, and it makes sense to me that vanilla marines would have it. And if we are using that frame of mind you must not play people who take fortifications as they are not in their codex. I hardly think anyone would switch from blood angels to "Red Vanilla Marines" simply because they get access to a stormtalon.

      Delete
    13. To the people refusing to play against Vanilla Marines if they use Storm Ravens, GET OVER YOURSELF. YOU AREN'T THAT IMPORTANT AND ARE MAKING YOURSELVES LOOK LIKE ASSES. Games Workshop is changing the rules, if you don't like the changes, that's your problem; not your opponents.

I may end up taking advantage of this rule change and if my opponent refused to play against me because I had it in my list I would not only chew them out, but claim match victory

      Delete
    14. Anyone saying they won't allow people to use it because it isn't in the codex, does that mean you're going to ban other fliers who weren't in the codex, such as the ork fliers?

      Delete
    15. LOL Such whinging because another army has something that you don't. It's not like anything has been taken away from the Blood Angels, and no, before you start giving something to someone is never the same as taking away from someone else. Unless something is actually taken away, that is. Which, in this case, nothing has.

You never know, non-Codex chapters might get to use the Storm Talon.

      Delete
    16. Oh will you BA people stop your WHINING! for gods sake! how do you think us dark angels feel half the time?? we never get unique units, we only just GOT a few and besides the knights they aren't that good!

ALSO we don't get your "amazing" stormraven, we just get some mediocre ground support (air superiority fighter with s6 weapons? pah) yes uniqueness is good if you have it, just consider other people when you lose ONE unit.

      Delete
    17. Then as a Grey Knight player I'll start taking vanilla marine units in my lists and you all can sit and spin when you whine about it. The comment wasn't about taking away from either GK or BA codexes, it was about the additions being supplemental and NOT chapter approved additions to codex ala ork fighta/ stormtalon. Its about whats in your book.

    1. If it doesn't have any new fliers in and is just a compilation of already released rules, no thanks. Honestly I feel if it came from almost any other company it would be a free download.

      Delete
    2. Exactly what I thought. They release a new unit for a codex but if you dont buy the rules (WD when it comes out or Ipad download) you wont be able to use it.

The rules should be in the box or free to download, not a tagged on £5-40 cost after you buy the kit.

I guess this is their "solution" to people complaining about not being able to get the rules since you can't buy the WD and not everyone has an overpriced Ipad.

It seems almost every month GW tries to screw their consumers in one way or another.
I have a feeling their own greed will be their downfall...

      Delete
    3. Still wondering what their solution is then to the OOP SoB "codex". If this is indeed an effort to provide players with an in print version of flyer rules, why not do the same and release at least a pdf of the SoB dex (other than vague bs catch 22s about the design studio).

    1. Yes - have to say I'm getting worried as well.

Should they not be forthcoming 'oh well'. Another month onward.

    2. Was there much more to rumour in fairness? There were plenty of new units/kits listed, all that the rumours need now is a confirmed release date and a leak in White Dwarf

  5. Well if this is true, this went from instant buy to instant not buy.

  6. The closer the release is, the more I think this will indeed contain nothing useful. Remembering Crusade of Fire, that was, what, 25 EUR, and contained a whopping six pages of useful rules (dogfighting and Arena of Death) that in the Good Olde Days of hobby-friendly GW website (not to mention the bitz service) could have been both released as a Chapter Approved article in WD (later downloadable for free).

  7. On top of wanting to sell models, it makes sense that vanilla marines would get the storm raven. They are the base shock troops for the Imperium, the books talk about getting dropshipped in and such. I personally feel all chapters should get the storm raven except Space Wolves. I am a space wolves player, but per the story, they fight on the ground, even though flyers rape us and I wish we had one, it just doesn't make sense.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Just because space wolves prefer to fight on the ground doesn't mean that they would not have fliers to get them there.

Personally I find the idea that they would not have the Stormraven to be hard to believe. The fluff and cannon establish that the space wolves maintain their own spacegoing fleet of strike cruisers and battle barges. The idea that they would not have their own transports to get troops from ship to surface is just patently rediculous.

The space wolves have to do more than launch drop pods at a planet and and then call and wait for an IG tow truck to drag them back up to the battle barges. They would have to have some form of self propelled transport to get back and forth from the ship to surface. And a flying assault brick designed to deliver them into the close combat that they like to be in would be ideal.

I could believe them not having the Stormtalon; I don't believe it makes sense from a fluff standpoint for them to not have the Stormraven or some sort of equivalent.

After all, just because they prefer to fight on foot doesn't prevent them from having Landspeeders, Rhino's, Whirlwinds, and the assorted mechanized elements that are neccessary to a modern/futuristic army.

      Delete
    2. I have to agree, they have to have some sort of air support, you just couldn't be a strong military presence without it. Also it hurts the game, leaving us wolves players severely shorthanded, forcing us to go outside the dex and use allies.

      Delete
    3. Sorry, but isn't the Thunderhawk the space marine transport of choice? I really don't know why they would have such a thing as a storm raven or any of these little flying landraiders of doom

      Delete
    4. Reading WIlliam King's space wolf series and one of the first mentions of anything space wolf-y is the thunderhawk gunship, which is used extensively throughout the first novel. In my mind the storm raven is just a smaller variant on the gunship, and I'd be very surprised if SW don't have access to them. They can also use the assault ram, which is a similar thing, but sadly not codex material (but very space wolfish in my opinion)

      Delete
    5. That's fair enough, but it also means one less reason to collect blood angels. on that basis why not make the dark angels land speeder vengeance available to all space marine players or the nephalim fighter.

      Delete
    6. I don't understand where this spoilt "Me and my chapter are special" attitude comes from.

You play an army because of their identity and what they can do. Just because other armies now get access to a single unit that you have doesn't take anything away from what you still have. Blood Angels have the Storm Raven. This book will be released and the Blood Angels will still have the Storm Talon, nothing's changed for them at all.

  8. Never underestimate GW's ability to release something that really has a whole lot of nothing in it..................

I fully expect this book to have nothing more than what's been listed.

As far as space wolves go, I never understood their lack of flyer rules as well. If any chapter didn't have flyers it would be Salamanders. Didn't it say specifically in their fluff that they didn't really use flyers because of the MASSIVE amount of gravity on their home planet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agreed, some modeling & painting tips along with some flyer-centric scenarios will easily fill that book without any new flyers.

      Delete
    2. i've never seen anything in the salamanders fluff about them not using flyers or that Nocturne has massive amounts of gravity so i have no idea where you got that from, the only strange effect of Nocturne is where the moon Promethus causes earthquakes and tidal waves from it's orbit and every 15 years make these more severe and includes erupting volcanoes as promethus orbits closer, therfore it makes complete sense that Salamnders must have fliers (also one of the found 5 artifacts of Vulkan is a forgeship so they need fliers to get to that) as every 15 years they must evacuate some people while this natural event happens.

      Delete
    3. Index Astartes IV to the rescue: "The conditions on Nocturne are not conductive to training for high speed attack or using the anti-grav engines of Land Speeders, so the Chapter employs relatively few of these specialized fast attack units."
"The reflexes of the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter are not as fast as those of other Chapters --- However, it is unknown whether this defect is due to a problem in the gene-seed, being raised on their high-gravity world, or the Chapter's doctrines against hastiness and impetuosity."

I would imagine that the "conditions" in the first quote refer more to broken ground, lava flows, and such, making bikes and speeders tricky to employ, but they nevertheless use some of them (because not every planet is like Nocturne), bike squadrons and Land Speeders both being 0-1 in the following army list (flyers not being part of regular 40K at the time anyway).

But it says nothing of them not using flyers, which are unaffected by terrain, even allow to overcome the very obstacles set by difficult terrain. Also, Nocturne is not the only high-gravity world in the galaxy, and flyers are used on those too.

"Flyers" like the Stormtalon don't even "fly" in the sense that they would use aerodynamic lift to overcome gravity (relying on their engines instead), and flyers like the Valkyrie that have wings are known to operate in vacuum (where aerodynamic lift does not even exist), so they obviously have some sort of lift jets/rockets to complement or replace aerodynamic lift. Going by the fluff, Imperial flyers have engines capable of phenomenal acceleration (by 013.M3 Terran standards), so "high" gravity is irrelevant to Imperial flyers, as long as it is still low enough to allow human or abhuman (Ogryns, Squats) habitation.

      Delete
    4. plus snow trooper to add to your point of Salamnaders using bikes and speeders Nocturne is there homeworld but the moon
Prometheus is the location of there fortess monastery and as such does not suffer the same effects as those on Nocturne.

      Delete
    5. There is fluff stating that Nocturne has very high gravity. I believe (off the top of my head) it said so in Codex:Armageddon and was represented in game by only allowing Salamander units to move '5' instead of '6'.

  9. I have to say BTW; everytime I look at the title of this article, I keep reading "Death From the Skies: Its Awful". My eyes keep skipping over the rest of the title for some reason....

  10. My chapter hasn't flyer here, my chapter hasn't flyer there....ehm...do you remember that in the fluff, all chapters have the Thunderhawk?

  11. Speaking of quiet, anyone notice GW took down their official Facebook page after all the angry feedback regarding the Spots fiasco? *queue GWDF*

    ReplyDelete
  12. Quite a few HH novels talk about chapters having stormbirds as well. I think every chapter use some sort of flyer.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So if their idea is to sell more models, wouldn't it make sense to give the Stormtalon to the BAs and BTs? It just seems to me that GW are going out of their way to give Vanilla Marines more than they need. There are already many units that they get that the other chapters don't, to start stripping away the unique units to give them to Vanilla Marines is extremely stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am looking forward to this release. While I still think the Stormraven should be unique to Blood Angels and Grey Knight armies I have no grief over its inclusion to the other standard Space Marine armies.

That said- I now have every intention of adding a Stormraven to my Salamander's army.
