The Necrons were once a dominant force in the galaxy, their technology so advanced that they could make or destroy the stars themselves. Now roused in ever-increasing numbers after countless millennia of slumber, they are once more looking beyond the borders of their crownworlds to reclaim that which was theirs. With a Necron army in Apocalypse, you’ll unleash a vast legion of machine-warriors, arcane technology and the otherworldly cosmic powers to the ruin of your enemies.
Play Style
Necrons fight with mechanical efficiency, rank after rank of their Warriors and Immortals advance slowly and inexorably in large phalanxes towards their foes before obliterating them with accurate volleys of gauss and tesla weaponry. In addition to this solid foundation, the Necrons field a number of more specialised infantry units, deadly aircraft, drifting edifices of living metal and even star gods!
One of the most notorious advantages the Necrons have in battle is their ability to self-repair. In games of Apocalypse, this manifests through the Living Metal Faction ability.
Not only does this improve their survivability in the longer term, but it can also help critically damaged units* return to fighting at full effect.
Now that we know a bit more about how the Necrons wage apocalyptic war, let’s take a look at some of their best units…
Top Units
Catacomb Command Barge
If you want to give your Light Necrons a handy speed boost, a Catacomb Command Barge will not only offer nearby units an additional 3″ to their Move characteristic but also re-rolls to hit!
A Catacomb Command Barge can be used to follow up your advancing phalanxes of Warriors and Immortals, enabling them to advance on an objective or the enemy battleline with much greater speed – all the while enhancing their accuracy. Another alternative is to lead a fast-moving Detachment of Triarch Praetorians, Tomb Blades and Destroyers (all of which are Light units and can Fly) to sweep around an enemy flank and threaten the enemy rear.
Monolith
Even before you consider the tactical possibilities of a Monolith, it’s worth noting that they can dish out some devastating firepower in the form of their four gauss flux arcs and particle whip – that’s a total of 5 shots a turn that wound any target on a roll of a 5+ or 6+. However, its ability to Deep Strike, and also deliver Necron units that you’ve set up in Tactical Reserves onto the battlefield, offers your army incredible flexibility. Drop your Monolith right into the thick of the action to create a formidable beachhead, then immediately bring a unit into play through its Eternity Gate!
Lychguard
Depending on your choice of wargear, these elite warriors will either be one of your deadliest melee units or a super-tough bodyguard. Arm a 10-model unit with the murderously powerful warscythes, and they’ll dish out 4 Attacks that wound any target on a 4+ (yes – a 4+)! Equip your Lychguard with hyperphase swords and dispersion shields to trade in some of that hitting power for an improved Save characteristic of 4+. This is especially handy if you want to take advantage of the unit’s Guardian Protocols ability to protect your Warmaster or a crucial Warlord.
Top Command Assets
The Necrons are blessed with one of the game’s deadliest means of sniping enemy Characters: Time’s Arrow.
That’s the advantage of having star gods on your side! For optimum efficiency, ensure your army includes a Tesseract Vault to enable you to roll a D12, as it will give you excellent odds, even against solid Characters with a Power Rating of 5 such as a Space Marine Primaris Captain.
If your enemy has something big, like a Super-heavy or Titanic unit, be sure to have Entropic Plague in your deck. Move one of your units within 12″ of it as early as possible in the battle (even at the risk of moving it out of Command Range) and play this fiendishly debilitating Command Asset to hamper its saving throws for the rest of the battle!
The Necrons are more than equipped to deal with any battlefield situation the apocalypse can throw at them. By fielding your Necrons in large units, you’ll make the most of their Living Metal Faction ability and be able to maximise the aura abilities of your supporting Characters. If you’re looking to increase your numbers to that end, why not grab a Start Collecting! Necrons set, and pre-order a Necrons Outrider Detachment for a selection of fast-moving units.
Apocalypse is available to pre-order now – alongside several sizes of super-useful Movement Trays, the new Crusade Case XL (which can easily hold a phalanx of Necrons and more besides), a series of Detachment boxes and more. *Critically damaged units are those that have a number of damage markers equal to or greater than half of their Wounds characteristic. Usually, these units are unable to fight at full effectiveness.
