This one is really disconcerting to many of us in the hobby. The idea that psychic powers are completely random just leaves a sour taste in the mouth of most people. Well, today there is additional rumors, that pretty much say the same thing, that psychic powers are coming our way.

Please remember that these are rumors. Whether Beasts of War are using the same sources (or are using another rumor site like this one) or their own, we don't know, because they do not say. Assuming they have their own source, lets get down to the rumor.

Psychic Powers are random.
Simple dice roll determines which powers you will get out of your codex

Personally, I see this happening, however, just not the way others are reporting it. Now this is mere speculation, but it is logical that if powers are random, that they are not completely random. After all you have to buy each additional power, and I do not see GW making this part random.

What I think will happen, is that there will be a new list of minor psychic powers that are randomly selected at deployment from one of the disciplines and powers from the main rulebook. However you would still get to select your codex powers like normal. Examples of minor powers might be as simple as +1 BS for the unit, or +1 WS. I think these would be in the new rule book collectively for each army.

Here are some of the relevant rumors about psychic powers
-Psychic powers are selected during deployment. (except Grey Knights)

-There will be at least 4+ "Disciplines" of Psychic Powers in the game. (WFB has 8 lores)

-Disciplines seem to fall roughly along the lines of the sects described in the novel "A Thousand Sons" as used by the Heresy-Era chapter.

-Each Discipline will have a "Default" power and a set of others that you will roll for each game.

-Number of rolls you get and the the exact details of which powers you end up with are said to be similar to WFB 8th's power selection mechanic.

-Powers have a "Casting Cost" that is different from the mechanic used in WFB 8th.

-Certain 6th Codices will add additional racial specific Disciplines.

While Beasts of War did not give us anything new, it still brings up the discussion. What do you think of Random Psychic Powers? There could be a lot less of Jaws of the World Wolf, or Living Lightning, but in reality we do not know the complete rules on how psychic powers will be selected. I am hoping that we hear something more definitive on this soon, as I think its the biggest black mark on the 6th edition rumors so far.

  1. So do runes of warding & psychic hoods turn into dispel dice?

Seriously these rumors are all sounding more & more like WHFB in space than it does 40k.

  2. What's next? Having to move in formation?

    1. Well, from the rules about wound allocation from shooting, yeah you will be watching where your squad members are positioned

    2. And new armies: Space Ogres, Lisssardmen, Great Bretonnia and Spaven

  3. If the rules are that bad, would it be acceptable for people to just keep playing 5th?

    1. I'm considering it if the game ends up being Warhammer Fantasy - In Space!
The only downside is you can't do that at local stores or in tournaments, but neither of those are a problem to me.

    3. it sounds like a hell of a lousy local store if its not allowed to play 5th or 4th edition ordinary games with your friends in there? :S

    4. I meant you wouldn't be able to play 5th edition in stores once 6th edition is released. Sorry for any confusion!

  4. I can't really see this working to be honest. There's no uniformity to the psychic powers from one codex to the next. The books vary in terms of available powers and therefore, you wouldn't be able to simply 'roll a D6' to determine your powers each game. If there is a workaround, it would have to be rather complicated and/or convoluted in order to be effective in game terms. I'm taking this one with 84 metric tonnes of sodium chloride.

  5. I honestly doubt that they'd reintroduce minor powers, considering the huge failure they were during 3rd ed. Rather, I'd expect something akin to "Lore of Pyromancy": Roll a number of dice equal to your mastery rating and get those powers or switch one of those to the lore baseline power.
Worst case scenario: Before all this, roll one d6 to determine the discipline, on a 6 pick one of your choosing.
    Still not a fan.

  6. im sorry to say this wont work as a system point of veiw and i think this info is just fake im sick and tired of ppl making just stuff for 6th ed just cuz its sounds like good gossip! Disciplines from "A Thousand Sons" come on! what armys could use them other then space marines and eldar maybe? as most armys will have they own powers !

    1. They used 'A Thousand Sons' as an example of disciplines. In a previous post there was a list of 6 or 7 disciplines.

What I am tired of is people judging from a snippet here, a snippet there and crying foul cause their little solider men MAY not be as strong, or one sided (you decide the type you are) anymore. Until every rule is known lets keep FINAL Judgment till then, not now.

I do not like the randomness of powers myself, but there is no meat to the rumor of how it works. Even BoW was unsure of it. A Psyker, just like a Wizard should be like these are the spells I want to learn. I understand they may be doing so not every psyker from a particular army has the same exact powers. I would have preferred a learning system, it would still hold a bit of randomness to it, but not as bad as this may sound.

    3. "Keep fantasy in fantasy and 40k in 40k" quote from an upset 40k player whom I know. If GW made 40k mote like fantasy then they woul be killing many sacred cows. Their differences make them unique not their similarities. If their trying to push 40k players into fantasy land than Ian sorely dissapointed with GW as as a gamer/collected I shoul make the descisions not be forced to play "Fantasy 40k

    4. I know. Why can't GW recognise the fact that people like playing two different games?

  9. Any rule with exceptions is a bad rule. This is made even worse that GK are the exceptions. So far, this rule seems like it is going to nerf pyskers, so why would GK be exempted? They are the last ones to be exempted, seeing they are one of the best armies in todays game.

    1. one could see it as a nerf for gk to not being able to change their psycic abilities after knowing the enemy, they might have to include it within the list while all others can make a tactical choice
