  1. Well there's the rail cannon option for the riptide at least , I'm gonna be destitute in April ;D

    1. From what I read on 3++, there will not have a rail cannon option for the reptide :s

    2. There's one in the diarama thiygh

    3. No mate, that looks like the ion accelerator; the gubbins further back are similar to a Hammerhead/Barracuda ion cannon and the muzzle looks like two ion barrels stuffed together. No pics of the Riptide with rails weapons that I've seen yet. :S

At least Farsight and the Pathfinders with those three drones look good. We've probably got a shield drone there, along with two that I can't ID but the big one fits into a Devilfish so, as I said in Nat's last entry, it's probably the deepstrike marker beacon that Pathfinders currently have on their dedicated 'Fish and I hope that the removal of the 'Fish and addition of the drone moves them from FA to Troops.

    4. Yeah, its the ion cannon thing.. it is just painted differently in the other picture.

    5. Eh? I disagree. Check his right arm in the top pic

      Delete
    6. Are you sure because there is one with the gun modelled on the left arm instead of the right that looks like a rail sustem

      Delete
    7. No, it is the same weapon, only painted with a black center on the 'weapon only' pic.

Zoom in and brighten the picture, you'll see.

      Far Left, second paragraph:

2 The Ion Accelerator is an incredibly powerful weapon, especially when it's charged using the Riptide's Dark Matter Core Reactor.

      Check-mate ;]

      Delete
    11. That's just talking about one weapon option- there won't be a check mate until it actually comes out :)
You may be right- all I'm saying is when you compare it to the pics of the weapons page it has differences in its design on the top of the weapon and how broad it looks.
But why then isn't that option shown on the weapons pic?? So I dunno. I hope it is a rail cannon and it looks like one to me. Time will tell

  2. Farsight. Fantastic. Another thing on the shopping list...

Why are all these models coming when i have no time, no money, and no energy? My tau are suffering.

Still not sold on the shark fliers though. Waiting on the rules but they could be the start of a series of ghost in the shell conversions

    1. Yeah, I am hoping I can salvage something from them...maybe even just turn them around?

Worse comes to worse, if they are not salvageable via conversion, I will just proxy barracudas...

  3. The Riptide is looking awesome - that gun arm is terrifying. Almost tempted to start collecting Tau just for that!

Something else I noticed, and this may have been covered elsewhere, is the complete lack of kroot. Both in background shots and in terms of new releases - weren't they rumoured to be getting a new HQ? This could all come in a second wave I guess, but it does strike me as odd that the kroot are nowhere to be seen...

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yeah, I was wondering where the Kroot photos are myself.

      Delete
    2. Would it be possible that the Kroot and other allies are being phased out of the main codex and getting their own like the Daemons were released for Chaos? Or would that just be wishful thinking that the Tau ally options get expanded?

      Delete
    3. Kroot will end up in the allies supplement with gretchin and others.

      Delete
    4. I would not mind. Never really liked kroot :P

    1. Good that someone likes them!

I for one see a Spitfire. Nothing more. :)

The Riptide is Awesome and Farsight does seem to be the Forgeworld model from way back.. Makes me wonder how long they have held this codex back.. Thank the Greater Good they did though!

    2. +1. Seeing the fighters from above, which is mostly the angle we see them on the table, I'm sold.

    3. I've never been a big fan of that paint scheme - it makes all the models look kind of dull. I'm thinking this is the case here: I like the lines, and if I squint at it, I like the way it looks. I'll just have to see it in person.

      But the Riptide? sexxxxxay...

  5. Very much a fan of the increased / exaggerated aesthetic contrast between the highly active / dynamic suits, and the weedy hinky terrified body-posture pathfinders/fire warriors.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I notice in the farsight pic the crisis suits with him are pretty dynamically posed...wonder if they are built using the 3 suit kit, or if they're converted.

  8. Waited so long for a tau update and now I'm just all kinds of disappointed. Flyers are ugly. Riptide is just a big crisis suit that would be even more tedious to paint and more expensive to buy. No new XV8 or firewarrior sculpts. I really hope the codex makes up for this mediocracy.

    2. Hell, I don't like the Tau aesthetics at all and even I think the Riptide looks cool.

    3. I admit it :) I've wanted tau for a long time and it looks like I'm going to start!

    4. As a person who has actually been playing their tau, I am thrilled with the stuff.

Sure, I was miffed about them not putting in fw models (my XV9's are all now broadsides).

But we got a new book, and hopefully it will be decent.

Being happy or sad is a personal choice.

    5. Those flyers can crash n burn! I'll my own conversion stuff. Now the Riptide is cook but at the same time, to me at least, some of the components seem out of size. But that can easily be fixed with after mark upgrades :)

      Delete
    4. John Tod, the new greater daemons will come, but not for a while! Think about it, they've probably got a warehouse full of old models that they want to shift first.

Step 1 - release new codex with awesome stats for GDs
Step 2 - watch the masses go mental and buy whatever is available
Step 3 - wait 6 months until the market had reached saturation.
Step 4 - release the new models and watch everyone buy those too because they look twice as good.

      Delete
    5. They haven't been doing second waves for a long while now, you should be use to it.

      Delete
    6. All valid points...just musing...

      Delete
    7. Second wave releases will be to update old models, ie, not high priority. There hasn't been a 2nd wave for Chaos Marines (who need some updated kits), DA (who really don't need updated kits), or Chaos Daemons (who need plastic GD/Named GD and plastic fast daemons such as flesh hounds and fiends).

  13. Maybe just a redesign of the top hatch or even a command frame upgrade to tell it apart from other Devilfii. I REALLY lol'd at the Riptides head, makes me think of a 'upper class' Fire Warrior who wasn't happy that his suit was the same as Fw from lower income brackets so demanded a suit be built for his suit. A dude within a suit within a suit...

    LOVE the flyers

    3. See, I think the head is just fine.

Its only when we project an anthropomorphic image upon the model it does not hold up.

Yo dawg. We heard you like guns, so we put guns, on your guns. XD

    ReplyDelete
  16. Well the Riptide suit still looks iffy. I really hope that it looks much better in reality. The head is still way too small, like it's been overcocky and punished with shrinking powder like in Beetlejuice and it's head now looks like a peanut balanced upon a fist. No.
But I am wondering if OL' RIPPY RIIIIPPPAH *has* to take a shield or could have two chunky weapon arms instead?

Flyers - still terrible. I'd rather have another two Barracuda and mod them into the two new roles. Urgh. This new design in no way tallys up with the existing Epic/BFG fleet or skimmers. The Devilfish look to have bigger engines. No.

New 'Finders and drones - yes! Hell yes, and I'm guessing that one drone is a shield drone by the disc under it, another may be a marker drone or completely new type and as above I think the big drone is the 'Finders new marker beacon.

Farsight looks awesome. Nice one Matt Holland! Redo the rest of the XV-8s now please ;]

    3. From a practical point of view though, does the riptide need a bigger head? Aesthetically maybe but practically it'd just make the sensors a bigger target for no other gain.

      Delete
    4. Practically, why does a battlesuit need a head at all? Sensors can be mounted at any point on the suit, right?

The heads are only there for aesthetic reasons, especially as unlike a Titan's crew the Tau pilot doesn't even have any of himself in the suit's head, as people identify more readily with humanoid shapes when they have characteristics like ours. Like heads. :D

It seems that Riiipppaaah comes with more than one head so hopfully one of them at least with be to scale and not like a pea on an apple. lol

    5. Actually, that 'shield drone' is the: Pulse Accelerator Drone
item 4 on the right side

      Perhaps a range extender?
I speculate the drones being 'wargear' now in the sense that they give you troops sweet powers instead of being 'extra wounds' like gun drones were

      Delete
    6. item 3 reads:
There are two types of drones that can be made from this kit including the Grav-inhibitor (?) drone

      Delete
    7. oh, and item 1 talks about the pathfinders getting an ion rifle... unsure what this does

      Delete
    8. Ion rifle? Possibly an AP3 weapon they can get? I'll cross my fingers for that one...

Hoping for drones that do more interesting stuff - a flying would with BS2 and guns with lousy range always felt a bit dull for what's meant to be the most technologically forward thinking race in the game.

  18. I'm hoping they made Farsight worth taking this time. I LOVE his fluff, and my army is even painted in the colors of the Farsight Enclave, but the whole modified FOC thing was just terrible! Well, come to think about it, ALL the special characters in the current codex aren't worth taking, so here's hoping...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think you'll find that his fluff has been scaled back somewhat and is nowhere near as interesting...

      Delete
    2. Actually I take that back; he's still classed as a renegade in the upcoming WD so all is not lost :D

      Delete
    3. To be fair, Farsight, despite his mediocre ruleset, is still a far cry from the space pope Aun'Va, who is quite possibly the shittiest model in all of 40k in terms of rules.

      Delete
    4. From what it sounds like according to the new WD, they ret-conned the Farsight Enclave being separate from the Empire, and Farsight, while a renegade and a loose cannon, still follows the Empire. Kinda like that, especially if that means the screwy FOC restrictions go away...

  30. Have noticed some things in the photos, which i know people have asked about in comments. First about broadsides. They still have a duel rail gun and sms or plasma, as well as the option to upgrade the rail to more missiles. This means older models still work and just need rebasing.

Second about the riptide. The legs are multi pose as it shows it both standing and knealing, and can take at the very least and extra weapon on each shoulder and under both the main weapon and the shield, as it is shown with sms and twin linked plasma, and with a very poorly placed fusion blaster.

Third, in the article about the riptide, the designers said the mock ups that created the riptide were used to make a second large suit. The 'tau enforcer armour' for the tau commander. This could mean a monstrous creature HQ in the codex, but just speculating there

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I interpreted that just to mean that the design process yielded two types of new suits, not that the commander suit was also monstrous.

      Delete
    2. I'll just point out that rebasing models is technically not permitted - all models should be used with the original bases even if a newer version is released with a difference sized base.

      BRB, pg3 :(

    3. :( but.... what size base are the new ones (based on appearances)? 60mm?
