The FAQ's for Chaos Space Marines are obsolete, and were up on the GW site for what seemed like weeks after the new codex release. Finally in the last few days they were removed, and it is highly expected throughout the community that it means we will be seeing a new FAQ soon. Friday perhaps?

Personally on this end, I do not think it necessarily means that, after all because they were obsolete, I think they were left up for this long by mistake. So taking them down to me just means that someone finally was able to, or get around to, taking them down.

Are they just around the corner? I hope so, it would be great to see them. Just do not get carried away yet, there are no rumors right now that the faqs are going to be updated in the next day or so.

Besides Spreading Out 2" helps a Lot

    5. Just for giggles: killing 210 zombies with bolters on normal marines, assuming a 5+ cover save, requires 1063 shots on average.

      Delete
    6. Yeah I think the reason they are not allowed 35 models in the unit is because FnP + Fearless is a bitch to get off the board in large numbers.

      Delete
    7. Zombies are no harder to kill than orks. T3 with fnp is the same as T4 and irk squads of 10 or more are fearless.

      Delete
    8. well compare with orks... and not counting cover ( if they stand firm, they are doing noting right??)
      however
chanche 1 boltgun to kill 1 zombie
      2/3 hit,2/3wound,2/3FNP= 0.29 kills per shot.
at 150 points per 35, they are worth 4.28 pts each so each boltgun shot kills 4.28*0.29=1.29 points per shot ( less with night fighting.. but OK, don't worry)

with orks for example: 2/3 to hit,0.5 to wound, 6 points each, they kill 2points per turn. So boltgun & flamers are not the tactic here. The best strategy is simply to charge them or let them charge. and ignore them It will take forever to them to win a fight aganist MSU, they kill on average 35*0.5*1/3*1/3=1.94 SMU per turn. So combat squad, shoot, charge them before they charge you ( wich you should be able to do since they are slow and don't shoot, you have the advantage of range ), conventrate fire on valuable targets and you should not have many problems.: game ends on turn 6.
Or use rhinos to block them ( they cannot hurt you) , or walkers, and game over.
      Or bring purifier squads :P
Maybe with kill points they're a bit better but they lack punching power watsoever.
Well they might be good for keeping objectives , after all, but nothing more.
      Well, we'll see!!

      Delete
    9. There are enough S6 templates out there that I'm not worried about plague zombies. They're also fairly slow. Sure, I can't kill all 210 but I doubt I'll ever have to. I'm likely to reach most objective first. Then I'll just surround the objective and leave no room for zombies to contest. Even with bolters they're going to lose a few inches every time their shot at. Plague zombies are not the end of the world. Just play smart against them.

      Delete
    10. But it's to much work to play smart. I just want to be able to stop it with out much effort.

But what am I more worried about? 20 3+ marines with bolters or 35 6+ fnp slow and purposeful zombies?

      Delete
    11. Zombies with a single ccw and no guns

      Delete
    12. Dark Eldar get what amounts to a pistol that ignores their feel no pain, there are plenty of high volume shots that ignore that feel no pain as well, not to mention templates, hell I think even Tyranids have some! T3 Feel no pain isn't hard to remove, ask Dark Eldar.

      Delete
    13. You take that many zombies and any shooty army will rip em to pieces before they can say "brains!". They are just too slow to be useful and can be taken apart fast (even with FNP) from range. There is a very good example of this on dakka in the reports section right now where Tau annhilated them. Normal cultists are far better.

      Delete
    14. 210 zombies...meh, just more sacrifices for the blood god. seriously tho, I would look forward to that much carnage on one table. that sounds like a fun game.

      Delete
    15. Ah baleflamers. No 2+ save? 5/6 of you disappear.

      Delete
    16. Zombies can't get a 2+ cover because they're fearless, they can't go to ground.

      Delete
    17. I think it's best to look at cultists are 3 potential units.

Unit 1: standard cultists with an autopistol and CCW. these may take some heavy weapons, (up to 3 heavy snubbers and flamers)and a chaos mark. a full unit of these are 150 points. giveing you 70 WS3 CC attacks in melee and a ranged attack at S3 out to 12 inches.

Unit 2: Autogun a full 35 unit of these costs 185 points, can likewise take up to 3 heavy weapons, and can take marks. these trade the close combat for a large amount of S3 shots out to 24 inches

Unit 3: Plague zombies: assumeing we can take squads greater then 10. let's look at what they trade vs the first group of chaos cultists. plague zombies gain fearless and FNP, HOWEVER, they no longer have their pistol, haveing "a single CCW" which means, they are unable to strike at any distance (which is minor in the case of pistols yes, but it does remove the ability to say.. overwatch a chargeing assault force) and have only half the attacks of a chaos cultist force. thus while a plague zombie force is tougher and more likely to close to ground with it's force intact, it hit's with half the attacks a standard cultist unit does. and CANNOT take chaos marks.

So I suppose the question is, is FNP and fearless worth sacrificeing the additional attacksand getting slow and purposeful? as well as being locked into haveing one of the least useful warlord traits on the table

      Delete
    18. I'm probably going to mix my units between large unit shooty cultists and zombie objective holders. Typhus is a fun and powerful HQ and I'd run him even if he dosent make big unit zombies.

    4. Most of things I see people complaining about is a result of there being things they want that are counter to what the rules are.

Things like zombies, Abbadon, and Daemon axe work in ways that some people just don’t like. If any of these things where to change, it would be a full rules change not because of some ambiguity written into the rules.

I wish I could bitch about Tau like this and have things happen. “Crisis suits under Captain Butter knife are 1+s that means they should be troops right? Pathfinders are fast attack they should be fast right? I don’t care what it says in the book if I look at it this way the rules are dumb. CHANGE THEM!"

    5. How is Abby not able to join a marked unit? "An Independent Character with a Mark of Chaos may not join a unit with a different Mark of Chaos", " also has all four Marks of Chaos". Therefore it is impossible for the unit to have a "different" Mark, as they will always have one he has. If it read the other way around, ie. a unit cannot be joined by an IC with a different Mark, then the arguement would be valid. As it stands, he can join any Marked unit, and anyone who says otherwise lacks basic English skills.

Daemons of khorne can't take the axe, but can have it if they ascend while carrying it, since artefacts aren't wargear.

      Delete
    9. Yeah Abbadon has all the marks but tge rule is you cant have 2 dift marks in a unit. Abbadon would have 3 different ones in a marked unit.

      Delete
    10. You are joking right? There are tons of poorly worded entries.

      Delete
    11. @Vol0: The reading of Abaddon that needs an FAQ is that yes he has all four marks, which is the problem. Say he wants to join a unit of Berzerkers, yay he has mark of Khorne the "Same Mark"... but wait he has mark of Slaanesh too... and Nurgle so they have a mark that's different than 3 of his 4. The only way under the current reading of the rules he could join a marked unit is if they had Mark of Chaos Ascendant.

      Delete
    12. @Meek & Jaydee: Like I said, basic English, the unit has to have the different Mark, meaning they have to have one he doesn't, which is impossible. If he had to have a Mark they don't, then he would fail every time, but that's not the wording. There are no rules about having two different Marks in a unit, the rule is word for word how I typed it, so as long as the IC has the Mark that the unit has, which Abby always will, then the condition is met for him to join. So say he want to join a unit of Berzerkers, they have Mark of Khorne, does he? Yes? Then he's good, no further checking is done by the wording.

@Last Anon: Examples or GTFO troll, I know of the plague zombies needing clarification, and Demon Possetion can technically be read to heal whether it eats anyone or not, which may be intended but I doubt it. Other than that I didn't come across anything poorly worded using a reasonable interpretation.

      Delete
    13. If anything, Id say the rule about opposing marks would apply. You know, one mark cannot lead another mark because the gods hate each other... Personally, I dont care about this one. As for the 210 zombies, I got nothing to handle it, and if it was slapped on the table it would be by a WAAC player that knows it would be near impossible to take down, so Id just walk away. I dont have time to play a game that Im not going to enjoy because I have 0 chance of winning.

      Delete
    14. @Vol0 I can see how you read it that way, and intention/lore I agree. However as it's written, and I'm going to quote it here for reference "An Independent Character with a Mark of Chaos may not join a unit
with a different Mark of Chaos." Your reading of the rule excludes the fact he has other marks due to having Khorne(in our example), which I can see. The other way it can be read is that since he has Nurgle/Slaanesh/Tzeentch that it doesn't matter if he has Khorne because they don't have the other three marks. Using the same logic in your last comment: Do the Berzerkers have Mark of Slaanesh? No. Then he's unable to join them, no further checking is done by the wording.

      Delete
    15. Yea but he has slaanesh and nurgel and tzeentch marks vol0.

I think this should just be faqed just in case.

      Delete
    16. I agree it needs an FAQ, not because of poor wording, but because 40K players like to intentionally read things wrong and then complain about them. There is no legitimate reading that blocks him from joining the unit. They have to have a different Mark from him, which is impossible, because he has them all. No matter how many times you try to reverse the order it doesn't change the fact that the IC can have whatever Marks he wants, so long as the unit doesn't have one he doesn't. You only check what the unit has to then see if the IC matches. So by wording the check always goes; What does the unit have? Does the IC have that one?

    17. Cain how is someone playing all zombies a WAAC player? It's easy to counter if you know how to play, can't hurt vehicles, and has no flexibility. If a guy plopped down that many zombies; chances are he's playing for fun.

But... the boon of chaos rule says that you must roll imediatly after slaying the enemy. Essentially, you can continue living even after dying due to Bloated or becoming a daemon prince/spawn

    1. id not thought of that...hmmm

    2. That makes perfect sense given gw new emphasis on cinematic gameplay. I can see, the lowly chaos aspiring champion swings a chainaxe straight into the head of a space marine sergeant at the same time as the sergeant thrusts a powersword into the champions neck. Khorne is watching and is pleased with the anger and violence of his champion, reviving him with a little added durability, so he may continue to watch as the body count rise.

      Delete
    3. If they are same initiative, then when the champ dies, you don't activate any more of his rules. There is nothing in the rules about him coming back to life, you are stretching it a bit there.

      Delete
    4. Here's one that will spin your head. A csm lord kills a greyknight simul with the gk's force weapon instakilling the lord. The lord has 3 wounds that are negated by force. He rolls the boon table as par the rules, and gains eternal warrior. I can see that leading to some heated arguments.

      Delete
    5. Nah, the EW thing wouldn't work. They're dying at the same time. So as the GK dies, and the Lord is "rolling" he's also already dead, so EW would have no effect at that point.

      Delete
    6. It could be argued that the boon roll happens before the force weapon roll, therefore it would apply.

      Delete
    7. In that case the argument could be argued. I was thinking of the basic GK marines, who roll for FW before they attack.

    1. I really think that we can bring a blastmaster with less than 10 Noise Marines. I know the wording is ambiguous. However, the wording here is specifically different from other entries that have a 10 man requirement.

I think it means to say you may "ONLY take one blastmaster per every 10 Noise Marines. So at 1-10 Noise Marines, you can have a Blastmaster, and 11-20 Noise Marines, you may take up to 2 blastmasters.

      Delete
    2. I hope you are right, but I think the wording was not meant to be taken that way. I think it is gonna be like the heavy weapon for every other space marine squad and require ten. Help us Kelly, you are our only hope....too cheesy?

      Delete
    3. That could go either way. If you look at all the other entries it is very clear for every ten you get X. But with the noise marines it is written much different. And if I'm not mistaken, doesn't the noise marine upgrade pack come with 5 sonic blasters and 1 blastmaster? Given Phil did extensive research on chaos fluff, this may have been his way of including the whols slaanesh sacred numbers thing.

      Delete
    4. Actually, he's right. It specifically states: "one Noise marine per ten models may replace his boltgun with a blastmaster."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is definitely not the same thing as "If the squad numbers ten or more models one Chaos Space Marine may replace his boltgun with one of the following:"

See the difference? A squad of 6 Noise Marines can most certainly take a blastmaster, but may not take more than one until it has at least 11 models.

      Delete
    5. The word 'per' can be interpreted both ways. This is yet another situation where RAW doesn't exist. Just have to agree with your opponents ahead of time until it (hopefully) gets faq'd.

      Delete
    6. If I remember correctly, this is exactly the same wording as Phil Kelly used in Dark Eldar and that is precisely how they work. For every ten models you have, you may take a dark lance or splinter cannon. 1 per every ten. So, if it was interpreted that way for that codex, why is this one different?

      Delete
    7. As far as I see the Dark Eldar codex uses the "For Every X you make take one Y." which is more precies. Why change the wording if you didn't mean something different? who knows. Needs FAQ

Any standard flamer has an ap of 5 which negates a plague zombies armor of 6+. Any strength 6 weapon denies the FNP. Throw a standard 5 man squad of space marines into closecombat and watch the zombies die in a turn or two. I would love to play with or against a zombie army. Why would you spend points on an icon of flame when they have nothing but cc weapon, and the icon only benefits ranged weapons? For the most part I am happy with the changes to the dex, but the writing is horrible and makes me feel like I was completely ripped off for that $50 price tag.

      Delete
    2. Here's one for the axe of blind fury. The only character who would benefit from rage is the DP of khorne. But he can't take it since he technically doesn't have a mark of khorne.

      Delete
    3. Ya I thought the same thing then it was shown to me that the DP's don't get the mark. If he did get the mark though than he would already have rage, but how can he be a Prince of a god but not be marked by that god....my brain hurts.

      Delete
    4. It would apear that chaos artifacts are NOT wargear, and are NOT lost when ascension happens. So a Kharn DP still has Gorechild, a Lucious DP still has his whip and armor (which is totally fucking cool!) and even Abbaddon still has his sword and claw.

      Delete
    5. If you run a DP of Khorne u should be able to give him a Khorne artefact like the Axe! The whole he must have the mark of khorne is a ridiculous argument from people who understand how insanely powerful that combo is. I ran a dp of khorne with the axe and shredded and entire death company with chappy one turn and the next turn charged mephiston and rolled crappy but still knocked him down 4 wounds before he crushed me with str10 goodness. I should've killed him too all without taking a single hit due to I8! Its ridiculously powerful! So naturally people don't want to see it fielded against them.

      Delete
    6. I have a feeling that the intent was to make the axe available to khornate daemon princes. That it was supposed to be for 'followers of khorne only' or something similar instead of 'mark of khorne only.' But as it stands he can't take it.

    2. There is also the question of what happens to the chaos artifacts of an IC when he becomes a daemon prince. Artifacts are a seperate subsection and not included in special rules or wargear. For dark apotheosis it specifically say you loose special rules and wargear but no mention of artifacts. This could be argued either way. From a fluff and common sense perspective, it would make no sens for kharn to drop gorechild just because he transformed. After all, these artifacts are extremely rare and prized.

  20. First of all, all icons give you +1 to your combat result, hense the 5 points for Icon of Flame or Vengeance on Possessed.

Second, no matter how you switch words around, no unit in the codex will ever have a different mark than Abbadon. He will have a different mark from the unit he joins, but this is not the rule, so it makes no difference. This is a logical is B in A's group, not if A is in B's group. Clarification can be made if required.

Third, 1 per 10 requires ten to be achieved before one can be purchased. If you drive five miles per hour, you will not achieve 5 miles until you have driven 1 mile. Way to annoyingly mix numbers and words, self.

Yes, you might question why the axe has Rage, but why require an FAQ to remove a word from the Codex? Why say 'We NEED an FAQ for zombies' when it is very clear what the rule is?

You see the wording a way that others see it, but their are people (quite a few actually) who still see it other ways. You don't have to agree with it but if you can't even entertain that the wording may be ambiguous to some, well that is either arrogance of stubbornness, your call.

    2. I recognize the need for a clarification and that my interpretation isn't the word of GW, I am just stating a logical conclusion.

The overall idea that this codex needs an FAQ quickly is bothersome, especially the reasons given for the need. This Chaos codex is one of the most well-written army books GW has ever created, and many of the questions are trival at best, or in some cases, answered in the book ('useless' Icons costing points).

I concede that the Abbadon argument is not in the group of questions in my previous paragraph, but to say that this is a 'copy-paste bad codex' or 'full of options... That make no sense' is a bit harsh.

    3. Your conclusion on the noise marines is logical. That is not the problem. The problem is there is another equally logical conclusion. If you go the grocery store once per week does that mean it is exactly 7 days between visits? No, You could go on Tuesday one week and on Thursday the next, and it would still be once per week. It really needs a faq

There are a number of head scratchers but I wouldn't say its a 'bad codex'. It is sloppy for seemingly how much work they put in to it. I'm interested to see the article on the process

    1. Conceded, for some reason I was thinking that it would still work against a vehicle, but it does not.

    2. Saying the zombie issue is written clearly shows that you havnt really read it. Until this dex, squad composition has always been a separate entry fully removed from upgrades. If the unit was meant to be limited in size it would clearly state so, as it does in EVERY unit entry! If you go by common sense it is referring to marks and weapon upgrades, not unit total. But you interpret it as literal to the fullest. So I in turn can interpret literally as well and say that under the options section, the ONLY option a cultist may "purchase" is marks. Add to that the example given mentions guns. You may retort that "add" means the same thing as "purchase " but that is your opinion only. Most do not consider squad composition to be synonymous with options. Unless you are Phil Kelly himself, there is no clear response as of yet to this issue.

    3. Sorry, responded further down than I had intended.

  22. I follow that line of thinking, although I would counter with a few references in both the main rule book and the Chaos codex stating that players 'spend' points to buy units, thereby creating a 'purchase', but then we might wonder who we were buying the units from.

I will also say that, although my rule interpretation states otherwise, I would have no problem playing against units of 35 Plague Zombies. Perhaps I have been lucky in my choice of armies or opponents, but over the course of a number of games and years, I have not had a disagreement over the legality of a list or interpretation of a rule (in game). I simply urge those that are requesting an FAQ to play the game for what it is and to agree with your opponent during a friendly game or go to a tournament that rules with your army list decision.

  24. Does a DP upgraded to a Psyker roll on the Tzeentch, Slaanesh, Nurgle table for powers as normal. Pg 33 Daemon Prince under Psyker says he must select at least one power. The Reference at the back under DP upgrades says select as well. But under Sorcerer is says generate at least one power. DP says select. Sorcerer says generate. So can a DP choose his Psyker power. I still roll but you think a daemon would be able to choose like in the daemons codex

    1. There is a difference in wording but I don't think its obvious enough to say it doesn't have to roll. Some RAW fanatics might say otherwise.

  25. Here's another "what the hell?" moment I had. Daemon princes are Ld 9 now... and that includes veterans of the long war. Yes thats right, the pinnacle of what chaos can be has less leadership than a standard marine unit with veteran (required champ plus one is Ld10). This is a pretty big deal for psychic tests. Going from Ld 10 to 9 doubles your chances of rolling a perils. My guess is that Phil Kelly thought no one would buy the spell familiar if it was Ld 10 so lets make the DP pay yet another 15 pts to be able to reliably pass psychic tests. The Prince can be an immensely strong character but seems like Kelly saw fit to try to make them one of the most expensive HQ's in the game.
