I know this has been rumored in the past, and here it is again from a different source, which is very defining when it comes to sorting out rumors. Here is the next little bit.

CODEX DARK ANGEL NEWS!!
Couple of weeks ago I asked a guy on Facebook who has inside links at gw, he just got back to me saying Ward is doing The Dark Angel Codex.

167 Comments:

  1. Not terribly surprising; Ward has been the resident Marine writer for a while now. Given his continuing improvement in quality over the years I think we can expect some atmospheric writing with some interesting new unit options.

    1. That's one way to put it....

      Are you a publicist?

    2. The other side to this is that of the 2 xeno codex we are all expecting (Eldar and Tau), the earlier could well be a Phil Kelly job, freeing up Ward/ Cruddace (please to god be Ward) to do the Tau book.

    3. Steven you are a funny man. That was a priceless reply. I actually laughed out loud.

    4. God I pray Cruddace writes Eldar and Tau, so they may be as equally powerful as Tyranids and Sisters of Battle

    5. Because it was boring with a lot of uninteresting choices, choices that regular SMs could take. Mostly. Let's not tunnel vision on one particular codex here. Everyone always complains about every codex ever. People complained when GKs came out, tons of people complained when Necrons came out. This is by no means unique to CSM players.

You loyalist lot make me sick. :P

    6. Don't reply to anyone who overuses question marks and exclamation marks and ":D", and capitalizes everything.

It's just the guy who's been attempting to troll Chaos players for a while now.

    7. One thing I'm wondering about the current Chaos dex, kinda unrelated, but wanted an answer. what's the point in having a shotgun option on the shooty cultist champion? DV does that, but it seems like you're sacrificing half your shooting range on a model, just so you can assault afterwards (when you'd probably stick in cover and overwatch anyway).

    8. your're good as dead, Unforgiven!
Another ultra- balanced codex from the best author ever!!
Just hope they nerfe sisters and tyranids a bit with FAQ- i hate removing figures from the table!

OK, joking aside, i expect a very versatile codex, with many good , funny lists, not boring as chaos is... sorry to say that but IMHO that's the point with that codex, too few good builds ...

      Delete
    9. This is BS! If you want to reintroduce balance back into the game like everyone was hoping for and thought when Pk gave CSM this over costed, mediocre codex, you don't then and go get someone like Ward in who does not understand the meaning of balance in the slightest! This just shows GW do not care about the game at all and only about the money. Complete BS!

Does GW really hate the fans that much?

      Delete
    4. You do realise that if he gives you Predators as Troops, we will see a new phase in the metagame, where anti-flyer weapons are dropped in favour of any weapon S7 or higher, to combat the stupidity of this.
I might have missed this, but can anything Deep Strike without scatter in the new Chaos codex? Or even better, assault on arrival? I'm fairly certain there isn't anything that can do either of these, which will make me more irate when DA inevitably get something which does both.

      Delete
    5. @Shrike-yes there is. The Key you can give to an HQ, when it is unlocked deep strikers don't scatter when landing within 12" of it (I believe it is 12").

      Delete
    6. Actually it is a global effect and remains for the rest of the game. Could be considered op if not for the fact you have to get into CC extremely fast in order to make any real use of it.

Ok, we got that out, let's all breath.

I do hope Matt does take a deep breath and controls his urge to out do the GK becuase they were given too much, IMO, but let's not condemn the DA codex becuase it is a) written by Matt and b) a Space Marine codex.

Should one be a little concerned, maybe. But if you already have condemned it then no matter what the rules are you will be looking for ways to justify your belief.

FYI, I am a Thousand Sons player.

    9. Ward has improved as a 'dex writer a fair bit. compare his earlier 'dexes to his newer ones.

on the other hand he proably does need... editorial oversight as he tends to undercost his units I'm hoping that GW wises up and finally starts following a universal cost policy for some of their across faction units. the Predator Tank is an excellent example.

      A basic predator costs
      Space marines: 60 points
      Blood Angels: 70 points
      CSMs: 75 points.
      Space Wolves: 60 points

there's no reason why the same unit with the same stats should have a differnt point value.

      Delete
    10. BA preds are fast
      Big Bonus for Little points
CSM idk prob becaus of diffrent upgrades for vehicles... Demon possesion or other Things that buff ist more than rhino

      Delete
    11. Think is Daemonic Possession comes with a BS reduction, and still costs points. There's no reason for the base CSM pred to be 75 points.

      Delete
    12. I wouldn't mind seeing Iron Wing return, but it wouldn't get me to buy DA.

      Delete
    13. Actually concerning the predator what was done is increase the base cost and reduce the cost for upgrades. For example, a pred with TL lascannon and lascannon sponsoons would be 140 in the chaos codex while in the space marine one it is 165 points.

    2. Right...considering that the DA were the first ones to strike a blow against horus and had the most victories during the great crusade 2nd only to the Warmaster. He beat down 2 primarchs in combat, and we finished off Warlord Ghazghkull AND another orc warboss at the sometime with only half a company! Something that ultra, blood angels, I.G. And salamanders FAILED to do. So no, I don't think that the first legion is jealous of some Smurf armored bug smashers.

      Delete
  7. Oh great... more ward cheeze... not content with making Blood Angels and Grey Knights massively overpowered, we're now going to be getting similar treatment with DA..
As previously pointed out... we'll probably get zero or no scatter Ravenwing/DeathWing with assault....
I also expect some 'special' rule allowing their heavy plazma guns to snap fire seeing as the DA were bristling with plazma weaponry in Dark Vengence.
The Daemons are not going to be coming out of storage until i get a new dex to combat all of the ward cheeze floating to the surface at the moment.

    1. Blood Angels were never overpowered, for one, and Grey Knights are no longer the top of the heap either.

Even Necrons aren't overpowered, they just have a flyer with little opposition in place because of the 6th edition rules. That will change inside of 6th months, however, making it a very well written and balanced codex.

      Learn to think for yourself.

      Delete
    2. I totally agree, armies are only as cheesy as the person playing.

      Delete
    3. Blood Angels were cheesy as hell, 6th ed toned them down a bit. Grey Knights are no longer top of the heap, because 6th ed toned them down.

Noticing a trend here? It took a rules edition change to tone down codices that he poorly wrote.

      Delete
    4. OR, they were written with the next edition in the writer's mind.
if I'm not mistaken Ward did write a major part of the new edition so he probably had an idea of what would be in it.

      Delete
    5. Soooo...
by this logic the DA codex will be written with 7th edition in mind.
Guys! quit complaining! It's only overpowered NOW. It'll be fine later. Like in 5 years.
Yeah that's totally how rules should be written.
      Don't make excuses for incompetence.

      Delete
    6. Gk came out a little over a year before 6th so they could have been written with that in mind that they will have to deal with their current dex for a while with little or no updates in the white dwarfs

      Delete
    7. Because maybe they actually were written with 6th edition in mind? Kinda like how everyone said they were all along? Funny that...

      Delete
    8. Def got to agree with this thread. Its not like they wrote the 6th edition a month out. Nor did they suddenly realize "omg! We're about to have been doing this for a quarter century!" Factor in the fact that ward was one of the three writers for the 6th brb, and yeah, I could see him writing with the future in mind ... same probly goes for Phil Kelly. If I'm not mistaken, there was a lot of bitching.about DA being op before 6th...

  8. I'd say lets give him the benefit of the doubt, but everyone is jumping to conclusions already so, no point lol.

BA really isn't that bad, and Codex Space Marines is one of the more balanced books out there, the real problem is the bulk of xenos books and their authors (intentionally or unintentionally) being incapable of producing lists that stack up well to marines.

Maybe Ward should just write all the books. The rules, I really don't like his writing style for the fluff.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. BA were bad, rules edition change toned them down. I'll give him C:SM, because they truly are one of the most balanced books. Grey Knights were also atrociously cheesy, with the rules edition change toning them down a bit; although there's still some cheesy stuff they can do. Not gonna offer an opinion on Necrons as I haven't played against them myself.

      Delete
    2. Oh, also, not really THAT surprising, Cruddace hasn't written a proper book since 2010, it seems like GW doesn't want to give him another after the messes of Nids and Sisters of Battle.

      Delete
    3. I disagree about BA, they were never as strong as Wolves or IG, and remain a nice book with decent options that doesn't majorly outclass

And as much as people complain about GK (and there are some things that annoy me about the dex), it didn't dominate the top tables of the tournament scene the way every expected it to.

      Delete
    4. Agreed with Ian, Ward has written some decent books that, despite the cries from the internet, haven't been as ridiculously good as everyone is claiming them to be.

Grey Knights were absolutely everywhere partly because they utterly destroyed the meta game, which then adjusted late 5th ed with codexes such as Tau rising as a result.

      Delete
    5. Other than Gk blood angels are the best marines, there stronger, faster look at the predators inferno cannon anyone move 12 fire two weapons snap shot the others what do wolves have over that wolves are balanced and fantastic, but angels beat them at every turn how many meltas can u get in a blood angels army I.e. Gun/pistol multimelta lots!!! Anti armour and heavy infantry, thats a lot of strength 8 instant death, armour pirceing, and with storm raven goodness, the only thing the knights have got on them is halbird at stupid I6 id rate death company dreads over dreadknights though, there more likely to eat an entire squad a turn

      Delete
    6. Infernus pistols are at best situational, 6" range and 3" melta isn't wowing me. Wolves and IG were THE 5th edition books to beat in tournaments. I'm not saying BA isn't a good book, it has some wonderful units and manages to differentiate itself well from the vanilla book, but saying its the best book besides GK is denying the actual results, both for GK and for BA.

      Delete
    7. He didn't write space wolves or IG. This idea that Ward has ruined the competitiveness of 40k is a myth. He writes terrible fluff, obviously, but his marine books don't win tournaments. If he was seriously creating unbeatable cheese armies, the scads of GK that showed up at all the events in the last year and a half would have dominated the top tables, but they didn't. The issue with balance in 40k has more to do with the imperial vs xenos issue than anything else. GK aren't unbeatable, especially not draigowing, people just don't know how to play against them and don't take the time to learn. Similar issues abound with cron air, because people a. don't know the flyer rules and let others cheat accidentally, and b. don't understand how deployment and movement can seriously disrupt a list with 6-9 scythes.

      Delete
    8. the problem with 'cron air is that their fliers can be taken as dedicated transports. given the tatical value of fliers perhaps that's a little over the top. but their fliers aren't particularly good. their armor is weaker then many other fliers, and their telsa destructors are out ranged by the helldrake's hades autocanon. they can spam a lot of fliers but their fliers aren't particularly good, and are fairly fragile, and outranged by most anti-air weapons on the board. as more and more codexes get AA options 'cron air will swiftly be a fair fair less viable stragety

      Delete
    9. Yes but you need 6,s to hit so if a had 5 chaos marine or tactical squads, each one with a lascannon or missle launcher vs 6 flyers, that means 1 will hit a turn so in theory it will take me six turns, to hit them all if I can destroy them, plus if my squads are shooting flyers, how am I surposed to kill everything else, and the most silly thing is the models being transported dont die, they simpley walk on next turn, so if I took and aegis line as I always to maybe in theory I can take out to a turn, but im not going to take 6 lascannons, or a devestar squad or two because they are two unreliable out takeing out AV 14 so back to aegis line possibley takeing out one a turn not fun atall...

Chaplains will have AP4 power mauls. Yuck.
Belial is not required for Deathwing troops so he'll get buffed but cost more.
Captains will get TA and become a cheap go to HQ option for DW.
Better librarians because the 4ed ones sucked.
Plasma Preds which will be hot for 6 months until everyone realizes why expensive optioned out Preds suck. Hint: 13 front armor is not good.
    Skyfire devastators.
    Cheaper plasma options for tacticals.
Cheaper Ravenwing squads but only the Sgt will have the teleporter homer. Think about it, it's not like Ravenwing can get any more expensive LOL.

    Things I hope for:
More characterful it fluffy chaplain options.
Cypher as an HQ that lets you take limited Chaos allies.

Double checked, for the SM and DA books, PF is an upgrade option for chaplains, giving them 2 weapons to choose from.

While the power mace isn't necessarily good for challenges, it is BRUTAL against eldar (AP 4 and S6 = instant death goodness) and other low T armies, plus it can seriously level armor, what with WS0-1 for non-walker vehicles.

I have utterly smashed them all, trying out different units each time, just to get a feel for how they work. Your opinion is utterly worthless as you do not back it up with facts.

    5. Ive been a chaos marine player since I was nine now im 22, night lords are my army always will be,
Ive got some trator guard and eldar to but hey im a chaos player that inclueds daemons,
the new dex is hard to play with, and hard to make decent list easily, its a gamers dex now a balanced dex, the thing thing we suffer most of all now is our LD fall, wich sucks big time there, the fact that we run from things that cause fear unlike our space marine brothers, which is screwed up, ffs chaos space marines live on daemon worlds!, we must hide or something weres the fluff there! They fight all day long, lots of chaos marines are from the crusade, and it always says they were harder times but hey, like I said it balanced, we put up with it we have the best unit in the game, and now they are even better obliterators, we might start hitting flyers now we have assalt cannons and helldrakes and forgefiends , im not paying for flakk missles at 25pts each ill use the big guns!

    7. Chaos Codex is not bad at all.

But there are options that are pretty darn wierd.

Like possesseds for instance. They did get a boost with random mutation happening every turn, but still have no assault grenades. Champion still cannot take wargear options.

Warp talons also have same problem. Again, no assault grenades. They also have blind rule, but why would anyone deepstrike them infront of enemy squad if they cannot assault right away?

Dark Apostle can't take anything from wargear options except daemon weapons.

And Maulerfiend.. I don't even know how to use these things. Sure, it assults fast, but has measly 3 attacks when it charges. Why bother taking it when you can take havoc for similar price?

  23. Hi folks

When I met Phil Kelly at the designer open day, I asked him about Nids and he said 'Ive got some really great plans for Nids'

So although highly speculative, he may well do that book (whenever that may be),

  24. PS and speaking on a different note they want me to pay some stupid price for a upcoming Horus heresy novel in Hard Back which i don't want pay like 30 dollars more fore some heavy novel i have to tug around they can @#%_ get lost.

    1. The new style hard back Herasy books will have more in them and be released before the paper back versions would have been anyway ( like 3months early) the paper back will be just like all the previous Herasy books. Actually read the gw website before you come here and flame.

  26. These rumour are so bad

"some guy asked some1 who has connections inside GW that says matt ward is writing the codex"
    wtf

these are so vague, random and lack even the slightest bit of evidence evidence.

It's literally the equivalent of me saying "i spoke to some1 who works for GW and they said that the next 40k codex will be dark angles, they will be super powerful and will be released within the next few weeks (most likely January)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I doubt that ward will conform to phil kelly's standards for costing. I'm willing to bet you that the basic DA troop will make all 9 chaos options look like dorks and that they won't have any walkers that cost over 150 points and still have 12 armor.

    >they did not like it and prefer the next marine codex to be different
    >its a new powerfull codex like necrons or GK
    >csm are left to rot again for the next 5 years

I will happen. They should just let Ward write ALL the dexes, that way we MAY have a slight balance.

  33. So everyone is bitching about the CSM codex because it isn't bat-shit insane broken?

    1. It's as balanced as C:SM is. Unfortunately because it's not Guard levels of broken, it's "bad".

  35. I heard that DA get a 1 up invuln save. They get to move 18" out of hand to hand following a hand to hand combat round. On a gets hot roll they also get extra toughness and strength, if they make their save. If they fail the save they get +10 wounds and Mephiston joins the table and gets to randomly kill ten of your guys.

  36. Are you fucking kidding me. Bullshit, utter bullshit I would rather play with the codex we have now than play with Ward's soon to be pile of shit. Since I'm a DA player I actually want to suddenly drop my army and just leave the hobby all together. Extreme, I know but so is Matt Ward's stupidity.

So stupid. The BA dex is good, you're all such dick wanks and it's painful. Do you want the game to be stagnant? To fit some rose colored ideal of how it was in fourth Ed?
Haters gonna hate. Do it over *there*
DA got raped for two editions, let's wait to see what happens before rolling out the pitchforks hmm?

    2. Well atm the Game is stagnent and very undeveloped... Due to Lack of dexes & Good FAQs

I Hope Matt makes DA more than the Rumors indicated. About Time DAs got some facerolling Units & Real ICs

    2. i really like the nex chaos dex. its a nice balance that has a place for every unit and every play style, not to mention most of my units had a net drop in price even AFTER buying all the upgrades available to them that i was interested in. then again i'm one of those people that play the game for the archaic notion of "fun." i have a fluffy night lords army and i'm adding huron blackheart ala the total destruction of the marines errant chapter. should be good times.

  44. A lot of comments on here are absolute crap... A codex is a good as the player wielding it.

If a codex is "broken" or "crap", its because you lack any sort of imagination to make it work, or extremely unlucky in dice rolls...

Behave yourselves and stop blaming everyone else for your poor judgement during games...

    1. There is a gulf of difference between Tyranids and Grey Knights, Imperial Guard and Tau, Space Wolves and Eldar, etc.., and anyone who says the only difference is the player behind the army is a blathering idiot.

      Don't be that idiot.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous 3.35am.

Rubbish...Disparity between codexes is inevitable, you can't compare the codexes to each other as they will never be at a level playing field...whether they are older codexes, whether rules change, units go in and out of favour, etc...so comparision is pointless. Their as different as the people writing them...and as different as the people weilding them.

Thats why 40k forums around the world are filled with people, looking for advice to improve their army lists...otherwise everybody would be running the same listd, which would be incredably boring.

I play Eldar as well as DA, I'm also a former Nid and SW player too. Yes I've lost to BA,GK and SW, I've also wiped out players with these armies...

So, either you've failed to make your point clearly, or just like 90% of people on here your moaning at rules rather than, "possibly", just "possibly", looking at the way you play?

Your never "Guarnteed" a win at any game with any list...but aren't the most memorable games the close fought ones?

      Delete
    3. OO, OK. So disparity between codexes is ok, because different people are playing them?

So its ok that Tyranid codex got pooped on, while IG and GK got buffed to horrifying scale because players skills vary?

Apprently you have no sense of need for balance in games. You can't just disregard game balance hoping that players' experiences and playing style somehow makes everything fine.

      Delete
    4. @ Anon 2.44pm.

      Re-read my first paragraph...

Disparity happens, especially when the rules change and everyone cries "cheese" because units get shat on or buffed... I accept it as a transition in the way the game is played...

Its happened with every edition...this is nothing new.

You can still win with Nids, so how did they get pooped on exactly?

You can still lose with IG and GK so how did they get buffed?

Everyone wants thier army to be the top army in the galaxy...you know as well as I do that isn't the case.

You can have 3 different IG players at one store and each one will have a different list...some more effective than others...thats where generalship and a little luck come into it.

I dont know how many times I can say the same thing to you...If you still haven't got what I'm trying to say to you by now then lets just agree to disagree and part ways like gentlemen rather than calling someone an "idiot" or acting like a sarcastic prick...

I actually don't mind Ward so much for his rules as I do his fluff. Sure, some of his rules are a little ham fisted and Grey Knights were balls-to-the-ball insane but C:SM, C:N and C:BA were actually fairly balanced.
I'm just dreading having to read about how Sammael of the Ravenwing killed a million guys by running them over while driving his jetbike at the speed of light or some bulls#!t like that.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I used to hate on Matt Ward, but then I saw 6th ed...
He did a GREAT job with it, and it even slightly balanced his broken Codices (except for Necron flyers, but they're going to be less prominent as more AA comes around).

However, I cannot stand to read his fluff; for example, I almost puked when reading the GK fluff.
That's my ONLY concern for the Codex, I'm fairly positive that it won't be horrible or broken like GK were in 5th. =)
