Games Workshop is finally opening up a store in the Portland area. Exciting news?..... Well it kinda depends. The location they have chose is over at Eastport Plaza off of 82nd Ave. Why they chose an area like that is beyond me, unless it was because someone who had never been in Portland decided that the cheapest rent was a good idea. After all there are not too many places they could of chosen that would allow you to buy your models and pick up a prostitute all within a couple blocks.

Good:
GW decides to put in a Portland Store

Bad
They put it in one of the poorest and ran down sections of town, where crime is high and prostitutes will jump in your car if the doors are not locked. (this seriously happens, where they demand money or they will not get out)

Good idea Games Workshop, poor execution.

  1. Haha, that's hilarious. I'm somehow not surprised, as GW's business decisions, in almost every category, have often left me perplexed in the extreme. "I know, let's put a store for nerds in a place where they will NEVER go!" Or even better, "Hey, this book is going to be extremely popular, so let's only make a couple thousand copies of it so we only make a fraction of the money we could make, while random people on eBay turn around and sell it for twice as much as we did!"

Like I said, perplexed doesn't really do justice to how I feel about the decisions GW makes sometimes.

    6. Couldn't agree more Brent. I think their board meetings go something like "why sell 30,000 Citadel Edge Paint Sets when we can sell 3,000?"

As far as their new location goes, I think they are trying to tap into the crackhead/ huff market by selling a lot of their overpriced/ half full glues in the 'hood.

    7. Awesome, 10 blocks from my house. Oh, and most of the hookers and meth heads moved out to 122nd. As a former owner of a gamestore in that neighborhood, I did get an occasional undesirable walk though the doors to my shop, but they would quickly leave after discovering that it was not a pawnshop..

    8. Pretty funny. Doubt it will last long as there are some very well established FLGS in the area the closest of which also serves beer. Unless this new GW has a bar in it. They should have opened it in washington and sold and included a marijuana room.

  9. Ha ha, I'm from Portland and I can attest to how poor a choice GW just made. But honestly, Portland has a great level of support from independent retailers, so feel like there wasn't really a need for this.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Well, GW scouting for locations has never been the best. After they opened Discover Mills in Atlanta, they tried to open a store in Douglasville on the west side of Atlanta, a nice area, but the mall they picked was a bad choice in placement. They went cheap, picked the side of the mall near Old Navy, the Candle Story, Macey's and a few other retail stores and the military recruiter spot. On the other hand the other end of mall has a food court, theatres, book store, toy store among other things. They also has a Wizards of the Coast store there that went out of buisness. When they closed I suggested we should move to that end and take their shop over. They said it was cost too much. Well, if you want the traffic, you have to pay the price. It leads up to an epic fail.

Now GW has placed a horrible challenge to teens....GW models or hookers! Oh sad!

  14. The best GW location I have ever seen was at Versailles. I was visiting France and kind of shocked that they chose to set up there.

No one lives around the place, you have to get on a train just to get there. The atmosphere was right for the game, however.

  22. Saw the picture. Read the title. LMAO

Slightly disappointed the article wasn't about some GW staffers hiring prostitutes in the store.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Having spoken with the GW staff when they relocated one of the local stores - the new locations are indeed initially chosen by someone more senior, who has often never visited the city so your theory is quite correct. Here they moved the store from a major mall with excellent transit connections, to one in a smaller mall only reachable by car or a limited bus service or a 15-20min walk through a not so nice neighbourhood.

  27. Pros: the surroundings look like a Necromunda LARP on a massive scale
Cons: the surroundings look like a Necromunda LARP on a massive scale

Let's face it, the "GW Hobby" is an addiction just like any other. It will deprive you of your money just as efficiently as drugs, and the social stigma is comparable to that nasty STD you got from Tammi-Lynn in that massage parlour. Not to mention that it causes you to spend all your available time feeding your addiction, and eventually your family, friends, and colleagues will start to notice your changed behaviour.

Because it is an addiction, junkies will get their fix no matter how seedy the location, so the best possible return on investment is therefore achieved by picking the cheapest location available, which most often tends to be in the vicinity of the houses of rather ill repute where you can momentarily satisfy those other cravings as well. Oh, the delightful irony.

  28. Here in Barcelona there's a boulevard that can count about 11-12 shops dedicated to comics, merchandising, wargames, manga, tabletop games... it is freaks paradise, the zone where you can buy any Magic card you need or when you will find in every store the White Dwarf and citadel paints. They got NOT an store. In exchange, they got one around a "rich" zone that no one goes, another one in a turistical zone (near Sagrada Familia, this one works), another in a street that no one goes walking, another in a couple of malls uotside the center of the city... the result is most of the GW products are bought in local game stores in the street I mentioned before (every freak from this city knows perfectly the zone) instead of the four-five "official stores".

  32. It is not unusual, here in the UK, every GW is in a back alley somewhere; it is a specialist store and does not depend on passing trade.

Even head office is an industrial park in the middle of a town nick named 'shottingham'.

GW dont seem to be struggling so I guess none of us mind that much... Would we rather pay towards the higher rent? I think we are smarter than that.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I wonder how much the prostitutes would charge for you to get them to play some 40k with you in the store ;)

  37. As a person who resides a few blocks from that area, I find the whole thing amusing. While there is a strip club a very short distance nearby, I have never seen prostitutes around that locale at all. It's actually quite a bit cleaner than conceived to boot, especially since I've traveled into 'The Other Portland' on quite a few occasions.

For those who don't know, 'The Other Portland' is a stretch of housing east of 82nd. Ave. stretching roughly towards Gresham. It's a rather run-down, somewhat trashy place that features a fair share of pawn shops and churches. I have been on the Holgate Blvd. neighborhood and found this crappy little hole-in-the-wall that sold bottles of Shasta on back shelves and PS1/N64 sports games in piles among other things. In that same neighborhood are two churches, both within roughly seven blocks of each other.
