Apparently the new White Dwarf is not a leak, but is out in Denmark at stores. Amazing really. However, because of that, we have some details given to us via the comment section that help gives us an idea on what these new units are going to be and what they do.

A huge thanks to Lars Emil for getting this down for us. He spent the time to sit down and gleam a little bit from each of the units.

Just in reference to the title of this post: No, it's not actually a leak, the WD is just out in Denmark...for some odd reason. I picked up my own copy yesterady at a local kiosk.

Tid bits of note in the WD:
Dark Talon: Rift cannnon (no rules sited), hurricane bolters and stasis bomb (one use only, dropped on an enemy for - 3 WS and - 3 I)

Niphilim fighter: heavy bolters, blacksword missiles (no rules sited, but the battle report later in the issue mentions that the fighter is supposed to be good at taking on enemy flyers, so I guess the missiles are for that), avenger mega bolter/lascannon.

Deathwing Command: multiple options incl. apothecary and standard bearer. A "Champion" wielding the "massive halberd of Caliban" is mentioned and there's a picture (no rules sited).

Deathwing Knights: Terminators with WS5, Storm Shields, power mauls and special rules, incl. Hammer of
Wrath and "Smite" which makes them strike at S10 AP2 for one round. BTW both DW terminators and the knights can be fielded in units of 10 now! Oh and the DW can take plasma cannon and they have USR "split fire"!!!!

Land Speeder Vengeance: AC/HB, plasma storm battery (mentioned in the battle report to be able to fire either 3 small blasts or 1 large blast, I'm guessing plasma stats).

Darkshroud: HB/AC, Shrouded USR and conferes Stealth to allies within 12", and it has a rule that gives units +1 to charge distance (as far as I can read - the picture is quite small and hard to read, so perhaps it's plus 1 to something else).

RW Black Knights: plasma talons (instead of bolters, no rules sited, and not being called twin-linked plasma gun/pistols leads me to believe the rules could be a bit different), corvus hammer (no rules sited, but I guess they are power mauls), they also have the option of a RW grenade launcher.

Sammael: pretty much the same as before, as far as I can tell, though with a 4+ inv.save (which is confered to the land speeder if he chooses that instead) - can't remember if that's new.

Dreadnaught: has option for dual twin-autocannons, venerable dreadnaught has "DW vehicle" rule
Rules mentioned:

DW knights and black knights have a rule called "Inner Circle" and in the battlereport it is mentioned as giving them some form of re-roll in close combat.

New rule calles DW Vehicle

DW assault rule is mentioned in the battle report as ensuring a DS in turns 1 or 2 with no dice roll needed, decided by the DA player before the game begins.

There are more special rules mentioned but no rules sited.
DW, DW command and knights are in the same box.
RW command and RW black knights are in the same box.

This was what I could decern, but there are probably loads more if you really study the WD.

I feel with you guys "over there" who have to wait until the 5th of January for your copy of WD, so I hope my little run down will at least give you something over the holidays.

...and happy holidays once you get to it.

    1. The new standard seems to be, make awsome rules to cover the fact that the model is stupid looking. for any doubters I give you chaos dinobots as example.

also the opposite applies, warptalons awsome looking, garbage rules.

      Delete
    2. The dinobots look good though. The warptalons aren't even bad; their issue is that they don't have grenades which is solved by throwing a jump pack lord in with them.

      Delete
    3. Actually, anonymous, grenades do not confer from IC to unit. Check the rules on assault grenades in the BRB, pg 61: "/Models/ equipped with assault grenades don't suffer the penalty to their initiative for charging enemies through cover..."

      Delete
    4. Thanks DoctorHam, you're making me sad now. I figured that'd be a good way of getting rid of what just seems like an oversight on Warp Talons.

      Delete
    5. I'm pretty sure the grenades do confer. Hence the reason for options like the Phantasm Grenade Launcher on the Hekatrix in a Wych squad for example.

      Delete
    6. Phantasm specifically says it confers it to the unit

    7. I actually like those speeders, but then I may be in the minority

    8. Your not, I like em as well. I like the over all theme they're going with this codex. They're giving the DA a more Gothic look and feel. Which is a perfect fit into their fluff of being the "Medieval" space marine chapter. All the hate is really coming from classic expectations meeting reality

I'll definitely play a few games using the DV models and other marine models I have, but don't plan to make an army out of it. I don't see any problem at all trying out new armies just to play something different. But I don't ever do tournaments, so that might make a difference.

    11. Yes, I am going to build a DA army, I normally play chaos and wanted to start a loyalist force, so the dark vengence set gave me chaos stuff and the start of a loyal force. Does this make me a band wagon jumper or just someone who wants a second army after having the starter set?

    12. I wanted to play DA just before Dark Vengeance was announced, I found the idea of fielding entirely terminators awesome and after reading more into the DA it was even more awesome. Sorry for the rage but when every one started to pretend they liked Chaos it made me wrolf . But thanks once again for answering honestly my questions. Now only to see a real Dark Angels veteran players across the board from my Death Guard, yummy.PS I think the new speeder looks good but I think Belial should join the mutilators and go to the washroom together as they both look like they need to take a dump.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Except when hitting with S10 AP2 at I, which may or may not be their special rule

      Delete
    2. It's a power lollipop, not a maul, they have to thrust it instead of swinging)) Special rule is "stick to the lip" instead of concussive.

      Delete
    3. They don't "suck soooooo bad!". The fact that they have a SS and WS 5 already makes them pretty great. Plus unit size of 10 and as Logan said, the S10 AP2 thing.

      Delete
    4. Yeah that's firmly in the suck category. basically they get the baby MC rule.

      Delete
    5. still, the power maul sucks balls without the "s10 ap2 thing" (I'm pretty curious what's the catch). I liked my chaplains pre-6th, now they're worthless. I don't expect I will field them ever. scratch my power armoured back...

      Delete
    6. Power Mauls are the worst against power armour and up, but against anything with 4+ and below, it hits at initiative, +2 strength, and can insta kill most people 9since most with 4+ have T3). So if you fight Eldar, IG, orks, etc the maul would be incredible.

      Delete
    7. Of the 3 armies you've mentioned here - only Eldar actually care about this. IG know that if you get into combat with them they'll likely die, and Orks are base toughness 4, so that makes no difference.

But yes - Eldar and Dark Eldar characters do very much dislike S6, although they do generally strike first (for all the good it will do them)

      Delete
    8. Considering there's only one character in the DE codex that has EW, mauls can hit hard. If I take Vect for example, a ~220 point combat monster, all you have to do is don terminator armour and smash him with a maul and he dies if his shadow field fails.

Plus everyone forgets about the concussive effect of the maul. If you wound an IC/multiple wound model that survives, it's now I1 for the next combat phase.

      Delete
    9. >Power Mauls are the worst against power armour and up

Except, that's not true, because they are statistically better against 2+ saves than either swords or spears, making them the best "at initiative" weapon you can get for 2+, 4+, 5+, or 6+. the tradeoff, they only do about 60% of the damage a sword does to MEQ.

People who hate on power mauls are short sighted and entirely too focused on the MEQ heavy metagame.

      Delete
    10. Well don' the first company like to hunt the fallen? Then mauls are useful for bringing them in alive.

      Delete
    11. I'm not understanding the hate against power mauls. I've liked having them now mixed in to an assaulting force in the 6th ed. My interrogator-chaplain has been bringing some serious pain hitting at I5 and taking advantage of the concussive effect. But that's beside the point, it appears that these DW come with a Smash attack option or something like it, which with the SS make these mauls more viable then TH.

      Delete
    12. with all the plasma, does having a +2str AP4 weapon really hurt that much?

  13. I wonder if the speeder is heavy support? Sure seems it should be now. I'm also curious if storms will make it into the book. I have a speeder/bike army from the marine codex that would love to port over...

  17. I’m worried about the state of this book. It looks like the sole focus of the book is on DW/RW. Lets not forget, DW/RW each account for LESS than 10% of the chapter, yet I’m guessing 90%+ Armies we will see will be exclusively DW/RW. Seems a bit stupid. I see this book as being the ‘I want to play all an all terminator list’ Marine default book. People won’t care whether its Dark Angels or the little known chapter The Ass Banditos, people will just play it to play exclusive terminator armies, and for me, that just kills of the feel and idea of the Dark Angels. Lets not forget, DW are the equivalent of Sternguard and Vanguard Vets. No other marine chapter gets to run armies with these as troops, why should Dark Angels? Ok yeah, give them variety in their terminators, have a HQ choice, an Elite choice and a Heavy choice, but why oh why make them Troop choices? It doesn’t fit the fluff and it isn’t a president set by any other book (Grey Knights excluded seems as they sit complete outside of the normal Marine Fluff). So why bend to pressure and make it the norm for Dark Angels. Lets not forget, there are suppose to be 100 of these guys. In a 2k battle DA vs DA, practically the ENTIRE 1st company is going to be present on the field.

It doesn’t sit right with me and feels like a move from GW away from the fluff and just catering to the demands of the mob who only have their own interests at heart.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Holy crap! A company catering to the desires of the consumer base? What a terrible idea!!!!@!@##$!

I suppose that's like Grey Knights and their super rare grenades.

Or Chaos and their Helldragon things.

Doesn't matter if they are rare fluff-wise. If people want to play them, they can.

Besides, we don't even know everything about the green marines yet. We've just seen some tidbits possibly associated to the DW/RW. Go figure, because that's people's main interest.

      Delete
    2. It could be the case that to field an army with DW or RW troops you have to field a DW or RW HQ, which is pretty common in most space marine chapters.

      Delete
    3. I would totally play The Ass Banditos.

      Delete
    4. I would not say that the "Helldragon things" catered to the demands of the fan base at all. No one ever asked for a flying dragon. Don't get me wrong, it is awesome. But everyone wanted solid cult options. We did not get.

So I doubt that Dark Angels get termies as troops due to catering to fan base demands.

      Delete
    5. The Grey Knights are the elite of the elite of the elite of the elite, and nobody is supposed to know they exist.

Yet you see tons of Grey Knight armies - how would you not know about them?

      /sigh

      Delete
    6. They were Troops (or equivalent) in Codex Angels of Death. You have always been able to field all Terminators in a Dark Angel Army.

So no. It is not a move away from the fluff for Dark Angels.

Do you Remember the All Terminator Blood Angels?
      Or the All Terminator Ultramarines?
Or the upto 20 Terminator Wolf Guard?

Ah the good old days :P

      Delete
    7. Rau, clearly you don't know what you're talking about. See Anurien's post above that completely quashes your unfounded assertions about DA. They always had a tournament company. You are mixing fluff with gameplay, they are for the most part mutually exclusive. See Grey Knights codex for examples of the ret-con. Grey Knights used to be much larger than chapter sized because they patrol the entire Imperium and incur heavy losses. What about all purifier armies, when there are only supposed to be a like 50 LOL. Get off your high horse, you picked the wrong chapter to pick on.

      -Commander Argentius,
Chapter Master of the Silver Skulls
P.S.- a first founding chapter according to the original Rogue Trader (but you wouldn't know that).

      Delete
    8. Speaking of First Founding chapters, What about Rainbow Warriors? *runs*

That said, if the player armies were supposed to represent how common the units are in 40Kverse, you would have Guard, Orks, Guard, Rebel (non-Chaos) Guard, Guard, Tyranids, Guard, Traitor (Lost and the Damned) Guard, Guard, Necrons, Guard, Sisters of Battle, Guard, Inquisition, more Guard, Eldar, Tau, Marines, Chaos Marines, Dark Eldar, and finally individual Chapters and Grey Knights which would be only be playable by GW Staff.

      Delete
    9. So you think that the fluff will not change at all? It changes every edition, with every Codex. What if they make DW/RW more prominent in the new fluff? Then it would make sense fluff-wise.

      Delete
    10. I have a rule when I see something I don't like, it's a simple one step process:
Get the fuck over it. It's simple, really.

      Delete
    11. Grey Knight Terminators are troops matches the new fluff because the ENTIRE chapter is equipped with Terminator armour, and then Power Armour gets issued to specialists or according to mission needs

Dark Angels, however, are NOT an all terminator chapter, although with the fluff now they own more terminator suits then most chapter. They only have one terminator company, after all, so Deathwing being elites, instead of troops, is logical fluffwise unless retconned ridiculously

At least one, I want to model up the Dawn of War 2 force commander in Termi armor for a Lysander counts as, so the raven beak headed thunder hammer seems like it'd be a good fit.

As for the DA themselves, I've been wanting to run some Deathwing termi troops, with a termi armor librarian providing prescience, as allies for a while, so I'm looking forward to the codex to see if that's doable.

  22. Im not a band wagoneer, I've been playing Dark Angels since Rogue Trader. I am looking foward to this new codex. Though I must say that I can win with the current codex. Normally with a combined DW RW and the usual PA, with all their inherent synergies. I would also like to point out that if you keep taking the same specialised army ie pure DW or RW your opponents will tailor and you be pushing **** uphill.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Playing only amongst friends once a week tailoring has been a big problem especially if you win a few weeks in a row. I much prefer playing with a mainly Deathwing contingent but sometimes you just have to mix it up if you play one style too long or you will just get dominated. I'm not complaining though I feel like i know my codex much better than I would have if I had just went "hurr durr Deathwing" the whole time.
