With advanced orders already up for the Hobbit Strategy Game, we know that we will be seeing a big release date for December 1st. However, a few astute gamers and online wizards have discovered that there may indeed be a secret Hobbit release beyond what we already know is coming out.

How? Well, here are the links showing empty spots for a future release, simply titled Fellowship of the Ring. No real information on what these could be, or if they are a re-release of some sort.

Here are the links to go check out for yourself. A big thanks to Slick Samos for finding these regardless if they turn out to be anything or not.

  2. Whats with all these secret releases? Is is it too hard for GW to just say what is coming and when?

    1. According to New Line, MGM, and Tolkein Enterprises, they actually aren't allowed to.

      It's not GW's fault.

Besides, they have enjoyed the largest sales year (by volume, not just dollars) in company history with these new secretive policies.

Contrary to popular belief, releasing info early to generate a "buzz" did no such thing, and gamers aren't the responsible budget planners they claim themselves to be. When a photo or release date of a model would spoil early, the buzz was only there for about a month or so before people got bored waiting for it. By the time it hit, no one cared because they wanted the next piece of info, or decided to wait for whatever was around the corner to spend their money on.

Now models are selling in droves (to the point of sell-out ever since the Tervigon, for example), because the release comes IMMEDIATELY following the spoil. The buzz is still there, so people impulse buy.

The morons out there claimed this would only provide short-term gains, but it's been going solid for over a year now. GW's trajectory is up, while PP and other companies have been rather flat during that stretch.

Combine that with the fact that they have developed more advanced and expansive rules, frequent FAQ's, and random releases for nearly every faction peppered over the months and they've got a good thing going.

They are on to something and will stick with it. Or at least until the movie companies let them lower their spoiler wall again.

    2. @Anon, 9.37... So well put. GW can do no right on this it seems. They keep things secret people complain "why can't they tell us anything". They say what is coming people complain "why do I have to wait. Why can't I have it now". GW post good financial results and it must be because they are loosing sales... GW minis are to expensive they say. Dispite being the same price as other companys you say. Ah, but you need more for GW games...

Some people want to hate GW no matter what. It's just not worth the hassle of telling them how wrong they are.

  3. That info comes in the White Dwarf. The last Fellowship of the ring plastic miniatures will be sold in a box.

  4. That will be the plastic fellowship set that was in the latest white dwarf perhaps?

  5. The film is out on the 14th, so somthing on the 15th makes sense

    1. Come on, a change is good now and then, variation is interesting. All of the same is obsessive. It's like having 5k points of one army AND THAT'S IT. The more things you enjoy, the happier you get!!

      Delete
    2. And that is YOUR opinion on what makes YOU happier... Keep that hippy "diversity" stuff, 40k is the only way... Read the website header. Aint no hobbitss in the GrimDark.

    3. Then lets have some Warhammer Fantasy LOTR and Hobbit stuff does not sell in US. At my FLGS they have only sold 2 box sets in a year! LOTR is not the cash cow it used to be so GW should push more for 40k and fantasy over LOTR in order to boost holiday sales, if DA had been released now GW would be making huge sales. The Hobbit is going to just faceplant in the US.

    4. Boooooooo... the worst thing about GW now is how they don't produce a range of games anymore. They used to have releases for Necromunda, Epic, Man o'War, Blood Bowl, Fantasy Roleplay, and a bunch of other games alongside Warhammer Fantasy and 40k. Now it's down to only three... and you want them to go even lower.

      Again, boooooooooooooo.

    5. I really think the hobbit game is gonna tank gw. don't see how they can make enough to cover the licencing. so... brace your selves for some price increse ass covering.

    6. Ah, but the above Anon list of specialist games you mention, were ALL built around the 40k and Fantasy line. They expanded the established gameset. BFG and Necromunda and Space Hulk for 40k(Really good campaign stuff here) Mordheim, BB and Man O'War/Dreadfleet for Fantasy. While I agree that it sucks GW doesn't support these games anymore, suggesting they were more than extensions of the big two is just not so.

  10. Love the Tolkien line of books, but that family is so god damn greedy...just like GW!? I'm definitely seeing the movie, but I hope it does so poorly that GW does not renew the licensing.

I don't think parents are willing to fork over $35-$40 for a fail cast of Gandalf the Grey, that will last all of 10 minutes in the hands of a 6-8 yr old.

I don't see any teenagers or grown men buying any of this. Except that Fran guy who commented above.

    1. The family does not own the film and merchandising rights for the LotR and the Hobbit. They are owned by Saul Zaentz. The family does retain the right for Tolkien's other works which is why you do not see any Silmarillion merchandise.

  11. Prepare for some heresy - if you are interested in lotr that is true to tolkiens vision, check out the Irish company mithril.ie who have had a license since may before gw. most prices are also pretty reasonable and figures are in metal.

  12. Out of sheer curiosity, how many of you guys care for or actually play LotR? I only ask because I know not a single player of this game and the minis keep sitting like lead in the three local stores that even carry them.
I feel like I'm missing something here, but I can't put my finger on it...

    1. I play most weeks but there are very few of us in stores. Usually your find LOTR players hide and will only appear for 5mins in store to buy a box.

  13. Its in the WD. The plastic Fellowship from the starter game will be released as a box.

  14. I believe that because the Hobbit is such a cherished child hood memory for a lot of older gamers you will see a lot of sales for the new hobbit line and it will possibly breath life back into the game.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If there is a secret release on the 15th I'll be something from the film that new line doesn't want spoiled prior to its release.
Not sure what that would be as the whole world has read the book but pictures of it in WD would give away the visual surprise of seeing it for the first time whilst watching the film. Perhaps I'll be Bjorn or even a seek glimpse of smaug.

    1. I agree (although I doubt we'd see smug this early) and that if it were a secret release then it's not going to be printed in white dwarf! It could be giants or new spiders also.

      Delete
  16. So an actual announced release is secret now? Really?

Like others have said, its a separate release of the plastic fellowship from the old LOTR starter set.

  17. What are you lot crying for? Forge World has just released loads more space marines, go and get them if your not happy with the GW releases!
