Yes, you read the title correctly. We have some Black Templar Rumors that may be giving them an update (albeit a White Dwarf one) sometime by summer of 2013. Exciting news for the Templar fans out there.

On a personal note, the drugs they have me on (for the pneumonia and kidney stones) have me finally being able to get to a computer and sit down and figure out what is going on again. I will keep at it as much as I can while I recover, and am starting to get to my email again. Sorry for any I miss as I am catching up.

Please remember that these are rumors

via TastyTaste on Blood of Kittens
With all the rumors flying around about Dark Angels and the bogus ones concerning Orks, I find it amazing that no one has mentioned anything about one codex that is in need of the most love. Before I talk about that, I want to add to the chorus that Dark Angels are heading our way Jan or Feb.

Now back to why you are reading this in the first place, the Black Templars, well I got some news for you!
And sadly, you’re probably not going to like it.

Earlier this year I was told that Black Templars would be getting the White Dwarf treatment aka like Sisters of Battle. Then earlier this month Robin Cruddace teased everyone a little bit by not confirming or denying they would get folded into the next Space Marine codex.

So after doing a bit of investigating I want to confirm that Black Templars are still on track for the White Dwarf treatment by summer 2013 at the latest. Now I do have one caveat: it could very well mean they are getting an “update” not a White Dwarf codex, but all I am hearing is a two issue White Dwarf codex to bring them in-line with 6th edition.

More importantly what changes are we are looking at?

While detailed specifics are hard to come by this is what I got so far.
Vows are gone, but are now folded into specific Black Templar Warlord Traits and have changed dramatically. Unique characters including the Emperor’s Champion will get specific ones.
The Emperors Champion is not required taking.
“No Pity, No Remorse, No Fear” & “Righteous Zeal” are Crusader & Zealot with various conditions. Expect various additional rules to kick in when Black Templars start dying.
“Abhor the Witch” is staying
Neophytes have their own unit lead by an Initiate (flip of Fluff and rules here a bit, but makes sense)

Rumored to be gone.
“They Shall know no Fear” Zealot to fill the gap my guess.
“Tank Hunters”

That is all I have for now, this one is still a bit away so will be interesting to see if anything changes as we get closer.

    1. Congratulations BT fans. Something to chew on. Swallow or spit, either way.

    2. No spittin' around here for sure. I am satisfied with the current codex, even though we got some hit by the nerf-bat.

And considering the Daemon update, I am not pessimistic about the BT release either.

  2. Yeah! We won't be absorbed by the vanilia-marine dex.

Wd-update is at least better than nothing. Right now the dex is mostly unplayable.

    1. Indeed. A WD update lets them replace a badly out of date codex without needing to replace or add models, which I'm fine with because there's nothing wrong with what the Templars have now. Great upgrade pack for all the bits, great sculpts for current characters, even the (faint) chance we could see new characters released.

Either way, I'm okay with this.
Here's hoping they (and the Sisters) get the full codex treatment by the end of 6th!

    2. Except they just took first overall at the Imperial Vox Caster tournament in San Diego. Seeing as how it's a massive event, I'd say that makes them pretty playable.

    3. I must disagree, Anon 6:24AM. Black Templars are not 'unplayable' in any way, shape, or form. Yes, they have to pay for their grenades, but they have insanely good units, the best shooty termies in the game, drop pods on EVERYTHING, decently priced preds and vindis, not to mention they can take PotMS on every single vehicle in their codex, AND army-wide rage, which is downright epic for an assaulty army. PotMS on a vindi is just disgusting, as it means you will ALWAYS fire that cannon. Plus, furious charge lightning claw termies with rage? that's just ridiculous, especially if you put a chaplain in there. Which, since they have the best chaplains the the game, bar none, it makes no sense not to. Now that their wargear got updated to 6th ed rules and costs, they are truly one of the best armies. I'm honestly terrified of what a WD update is going to mean for them. I know people who won't play with the WD sisters update because it's so absolutely terrible, which most everyone I've ever talked to agrees on. BT's need an update, but every single WD update has either been completely OP, aka: Chaos Daemons, or completely pathetic, aka: Sisters of Battle. I'm seriously hoping this does not happen, because BT's are a very, very cool army with awesome fluff, and a unique play-style. WD seems bound and determined to completely ruin whatever army they touch these days.

    4. Hear, hear Brent. Don't forget the power fist option on a chappie!

      Delete
    5. Thanks! Or how about the best Techmarines you could possibly ask for? Give one a Power axe, bolt pistol, storm shield, terminator honors and servo-harness, and you have a model with 6 S5 AP2 attacks and 2 S8 AP2 attacks on the charge. Plus 2 wounds.... on a model with a 2+/3++. Plus a TL'd flamer and TL'd PP. For a grand total of..... (drum roll, please) 136 points. Holy bleeping bleep, is that ever amazing. Please, someone show me an 'elite' model that can come even close to that, other than lone wolves, which come close, but can't shoot so aren't as good, IMHO.

      Delete
    6. Agreed with Brent. However, with SS you won't get bonus attack for the pistol.

      Still, don't forget about...
      - the dirt-cheap speeders
      - 3 men strong biker squads with 2 power axes
      - 5-men strong assault squads with stormshield, 2 plasma pistols and unit-wide meltabombs
      - Terminator command squads
      - Tank hunter dreads

    7. Brent needs to read the Erratas because a lot of that stuff has gotten nerfed.

      Delete
    8. @Snider029 what are you exatcly thinkin' about?
"Accept" vow changed rahter than nerfed, and yes, we have to move the whole consolidation distance because of RZ, but that's all. They eliminated the kill'em all rule too.

    9. Anyone that claims Black Templars are an "assaulty army" are off their heads. Rage isn't a big deal, Crusaders flat out suck, the tank hunter Termies aren't exactly a big deal when you can have almost two squads of ML Long Fangs/Devs for the price you pay for them, which are laughably better. The only thing strictly unique to Black Templars worthy of mention is the killing capability of the Termies.

The HQ's can get an extra attack and can get fancy with their charges, so what, every other Codex can do that. Wolf Lords, Necron Lords, Ork Warbosses, Chaos Lords, the list goes on. They can all get super killy and take on a BT IC without a sweat. And the inherent flaw of killy HQ's? they're not competitive because they're always expensive and end up taking valuable points away from your list.

My response to this WD dex development is to sell my BT army now before the news spreads. GW is going to shove Templars into the slums of 40k with such a move. I didn't wait years for my 3rd Ed poster boy badasses to end up as a few scattered pictures in 6th and what I expect it to be a terrible Codex, giving GW an excuse to not ship a new Codex for the next 5 years.

    10. @Petrow Drop Pods on everything is one that I can specifically recall as that was a swift kick in the balls to my friends BT list when it was errata'd.

  3. No way in hell was a chapter as divergent as the Templars were ever gonna be in the codex marines book.

As far as mostly un-playable, I may have to disagree. I have seen some lists that look very shooty. A Black Templars defensive gun-line with manueverable attacking allies could be nasty.

    1. Yeah, I don't think that kind of list is why anyone wants to play the Black Templars codex though.

      Delete
    2. BT do gunline pretty well, but they are still a viable assault army, simply because they have access to extremely cheap, but still very good, IC's. Their crusaders squads can thus be given a very, very good boost for a very, very low cost. Also, their Typhoon ML land speeders are 20 pts cheaper than anybody elses, which is just outrageously good.

  4. This would tie in with the long term release schedule that was was leaked a few months back had a few bt boxes on it not enough for a codex but to supplement a wd codex maybe.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Unplayable? It's an old codex that's been butchered with FAQs and may not have many options but its still on par with the rest if done right, we just need new toys and a real update..

    1. Book is unplayable, you can try to make as many combinations as you want but you are playing with your hands tied behind your back.

It is not a top tier book, its not even a mid tier book. The things has issues and to even say otherwise is false.

      Delete
    2. Its still playable, just not going to win often in a tournament setting, which most players outside the blog-bubble don't really care about that much.

      Delete
    3. NOT unplayable. Winning national tournaments immediately takes your army out of that category. Seriously, learn to use tactics.

      Delete
    4. You don't even really need tactics, though they certainly help. Power sword, servo-harness, storm shield techmarines with a bike or jumppack backed up by machine sprit vindicators, the only vindicators in the game I consider worth running, makes for a nasty core to your army. If they'd kept preferred enemy instead of getting rage I'd prbably rate them as the best assault army in the game.

      Delete
    5. This has been covered, but I'll say it anyway- the codex is FAR from "unplayable". I have been playing it a lot in the past 2 months and it is a fantastically flexible and powerful book; BT gunlines, thanks to the delay in streamlining the codex, were some of the most powerful among the marines, and are even better in 6th. Their close combat potential is undeniable. Also. Twin-claw marshal in terminator armour takes NO MORE than 2 turns to kill Draigo, as I have hilariously discovered.

  6. Yo, this is Branchgorilla, confirming these rumours are true! My many very hush-hush sources have also whispered:

    Plastic Emperor's Champion
    Plastic Neophyte kit
    New "assault-themed" LR variant
    Assault squads get "something special"
Possibility of improved Deny the Witch rolls
    New bike unit upgrade character
Something with "wrath" in the name
    Improved Chaplains
New unit described as "very gothic"
Something that uses the large oval base
Hardback Codex with words in it
Book available either 2013, 2014 or 2015 at the latest

Keep in mind these are playest rumours.

    3. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Templars are a top-tier army, if played as a gunline.

4x terminator squads, with double heavy weapons. 3 x five man squads each with a heavy and special weapon. Army-wide Rage or 5+deny the witch.

I cannot over-emphasise how good Templars are at bringing shooty death. It doesn't suit the fluff, but by God it wins tournaments.

    7. Hahaha, BT being one of the best armies? wow what? they have no AA, footslogging Termies are a joke and Las/Plas spam is dead because you need to kill the entirety of your opponent's army, thanks to the stupidity of the RZ changes, which is downright impossible when every unit in your army is easily outclassed and has far better alternatives in other Codexes. Grey Hunters laugh at Crusaders. Long Fang squads laugh at TH CML/AC Termies. Any trick BT's can pull another Codex can pull better or just as good, short of vow's, and the only one of which is decent gives only a mediocre advantage.

  7. SWEET JESUS. FINALLY SOME BLACK TEMPLAR LOVE. Not bad though. Wasn't the fifth ed blood angels a white dwarf codex? if so, I have nothing to fear.

    1. No, the 5th ed BA codex was not a WD codex. It was a full book, with a full release, including new models and new units. I would hesitate to call it love this soon. After what happened to sisters, I hate hearing an army is getting the WD treatment.

  8. Couldn't care less for loyalist marines releases, where's my Chaos 2nd wave? Those 5 non-posable cultists won't cut it.

    1. Haha, right after the full release of SoB, of course....

You and me both, although it's still good to hear an army is getting some new units.... maybe. Anyway, I agree, a plastic kit for mutilators/obliterators would be amazing, and a cultists kit would sell like hotcakes, if you ask me.

  9. I am not sure why people get worked up about WD updates/codex....The Blood Angels got that Treatment first before their Codex came out....This is good, means I will be able to dust off and finish painting my very large number of BT marines I have

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unless they do to BT what they did to SoB,in which case your already dusty models will become museum pieces before they become playable. What Matt Ward did to SoB in that WD codex was just.... wrong. Right now, BT are doing fine. What would be cool would be a box like SW's have for Sword Brethren/Crusaders, a BT-specific flyer or access to the storm raven, and maybe a new unit, such as a BT-flavor assault unit. And, of course, competitively priced rhinos and razorbacks.

      Delete
    2. Crimsonshark is right that the BA did get a WD codex but it was 4th edition. It is also part of the reason why people hate them. It was truly awful and had a similar effect to the recent SoB fiasco. It may explain why the 5th ed full codez made them so ridiculously powerful.

My brother (who has played BA since 2nd edition) went into my local store a couple of weeks after it's release and was told by the manager that he knew his complaints about it before he said anything, because EVERYBODY hated it. I think Central Office reaped a storm over that one.

      Delete
    3. I think that considering how different the BT's are from Stock Codex Marines that they will get their own book. I would not give up on SoB getting their restart, look how long it was to update some armies out there. I think the WD update is more of a hold over to remind people that don't play that army that, Hey have you seen these guys....and eventually they get a book. Well that is what I choose to believe and hope for!
