White Dwarf is getting a new launch on September 22nd. Its is going to be a big release, and some rumors have it that the next  release pre-orders will start that day. I am looking forward to seeing the improvements on the new White Dwarf, and think these are a move in the right direction.

via multiple sources on Feait 212 (multiple separate sources saying the same things)
-White Dwarf will be available digitally.
- a new logo
-The subscription model has changed.  No longer will you subscribe for 12 months. You will purchase 12 vouchers to redeem at your choosing.  This means you can buy 12 magazines from one month, or 1 magazine any month for 2 years from purchase. Basically you choose what months you want to pick up at the store. Dont want next months.... no problem.
-If you purchase the vouchers and pick it up in the store you will get 4 free issues. Subscription price is $80 ($5/issue)
-If you purchase on the website or get it sent to your home, you will get 2 free issues. Subscription price is $100 ($7.14/issue)
- The price is going to be $10/issue or 8 Euros
- They are shooting for around 160 pages an issue.

- higher quality paper, different cover quality
- very picture heavy
- more articles featuring the Black Library, Eavy Metal Team, Design Studios... Much more
- They expect to have more items attached (posters, key fobs, etc.)

- On September 21st, all old issues will be removed from the stores and website
- At the end of the month (the day before new white dwarfs are released) ALL issues will be destroyed permanently (you won’t be able to order back issues from the website).  These are going to be inventoried items and tracked, so there won’t be holding any back at the end of the month, similar to the process when they took the old rulebooks and core sets off the shelves.
- Many more issues will be sent to the store.
- The issues should feature current products and not be filled with advertisements for the first 1/3rd of the magazine.

  1. I don't know what to think... It sounds good, but I'm very skeptical of how it will pan out!

  2. How much is it going to be in real money? (£)

    3. It's a well known fact that Games Workshop has no concept of the current exchange rate. I'm also interested to know the answer, but I would guess £6 for now.

too much to be a casual purchase. Haven't they heard there is a recession on?

  3. Does this mean people have seen the new WD in person...
    I need pics :( cant..wait...much...longer

  4. I like the sound of the new subscription process. I dont like the sound of removing all back content, makes me think old stuff will be reprinted.

Will this change the 2-3 month wait you have when you first start a subscription?

  5. I like this voucher idea. I will be going in on that.

  6. Available digitally for iOS, I assume?

    1. Pretty clear GW is gonna stick with this one.

Only with iOS can they maintain their draconian control of copyright (not that it will stop distribution of pirated copies anyway...)

I wonder how long it will take them to realise that the best way to prevent piracy is to simply make their services more appealing (cost/ease/etc) than piracy...

  8. I wonder what this means for previous WD-only content, like the SOB codex and even the newer Daemons update? I hope those will be made available digitally - and not just for iOS users, too.

The changes are sounding great...almost a little too good to be true. I'm very keen to see how this all pans out.

    1. yeah making the SOB a iphone only thing would blow chunks

    2. It means the only way you can get it (legally) is to get it from someone who has it.

Realistically, until they start rolling out codices for other platforms it's safe to assume all digital products will be iOS only.

  9. 10.00 an issue? They better be doing some major revisions to justify that price. I hope that they do turn the magazine around, it has been awful for a long time now. Will the in store pick up be only at GW stores or also at indy retailers?

    1. Yes but it will also be 160 pages per issue.
So that's 36 pages more than nowadays

    2. It's like $9.60 after tax now, I'm not going to be heartbroken that it went up a dollar and 20 cents in price (at least that's how taxes shake out here

      Delete
    3. taxes are not something GW has any control of. Make sure you vote. No sales taxes here in my state, and I will do everything I can to stop additional taxes like this.

    4. I remember when it had great content like variant army lists, experimental rules and all kind of other sweet stuff to use in our games. Troll magazine, any one else remember that? I used to love White Dwarf and have a whole bookshelf full of them at home to prove it. Unfortunately as the price of White Dwarf has gone up the quality has tanked over the years. It will take more than fancy paper and cool pictures to turn the magazine around.

As for the price, $10.00 is steep for a monthly periodical that has always been a glorified catalog. Except it used to be a good glorified catalog...

  10. $10 is pretty standard for a magazine now a days, regardless of GW or not

    ReplyDelete
  11. Wait... so they will no longer be sending White Dwarfs in the post to subscribers? It's not a particularly large problem for me, but there must be thousands of people for whom getting down to a physical Games Workshop store every month will be an enormous problem...

    1. there was the option still have your white dwarf delivered via the mail like normal.

    2. Excellent. I'm really excited about this, but I would be properly gutted if I didn't get the new magazine to my door every month...

Thanks for clearing it up :)

    3. just you get some bonuses for going to the local GW to pick it up. which makes sense froma busniess POV as it's proably cheaper to ship a bunch to one place, AND it gets you in their store where you might impulse buy

  12. Im waiting to see how the Aus pricing will be calculated... Will it be a direct conversion or the usual mark up. We already pay $12 so it will be interesting to see the new pricing. As long As it has some good reading I will be happy regardless.

  13. As long as it has Chaos goodness I'll buy it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Only an extra 50c for euros. Count me in.

  15. So why exactly are they destroying all "old" WD issues? Why not just keep all leftovers in the webstore and sell them for half a year or such?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Probably something along the lines of "getting rid of old shame" or something like that.
Financially speaking it's also not profitable to keep warehouses full of old magazins hardly anybody buys.

  16. Marketing 101 - Scarcity creates demand, especially in a group of people like gamers, many of whom are compulsive collectors by nature.

Economics 101 - destroying product that may sell at a later date is a waste of money. However, maintaining a large back stock of product for which there is no demand is also wasting money. Intense studies should be done to determine the cost to keep versus the cost to destroy, and that will have to be weighed against the uncertain effect that the artificially created scarcity will have on sales and the price per unit that can be extracted from each unit.

  17. Hold on, I can't get my head around this: I'm on the Direct Debit subscription system, where I pay £9 every three months to get White Dwarf through my door. It's expensive for me to get to my nearest GW stockist, so the post thing works best. Are you saying that now I have to pay more and put more effort into getting something resembling what has until now been the best solution for me?

    1. I doubt they'll screw with the current subscription models too much, I'd guess these new options will be in addition to standard subscription types. But that's just a guess.

    2. Yes, hopefully. We'll see soon enough, I guess.

  18. My Gw hasnt restocked the last few WD's after theyve sold out lately. So maybe thats another sign their destroying old mags.

    2. Wake up people, Dark Angels are next.

Why did the chaos stop all of the sudden?

Sorry Faeit, your sources are trolling you.

Worse, still... You don't know which ones are trolling and which are not.

Think about all the fake stuff that came out. All that Abbaddon fluff BS.

Dark Angels are on the back cover, men. It's time to hang up the CSM talk.

    3. For the record, anyone can get in touch with Natfka and get him rumors. For all you guys know, I could have been feeding him BS over the past few weeks.

I have not, though. The point is that I could have.

What do you all say to the Chaos Space Marine codex no longer shipping to stores? My local store isn't getting any more stock for them - two copies left and no replacements inbound.
More tangible proof than anything else of what is next.

  21. They are possibly getting rid of all the old WD to make them all digital for a price, much cheaper than keeping but loads of physical merch sitting around.

The question still unanswered is will subs who get home delivery get it on or at least close to release date?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Wondering about people like myself who have a home delivery, and have just paid for their 2 yr subscription and only received like 2 issues into the subscription. Will we receive the rest of our subscription?

  23. What key fobs are?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Just to clarify anyone who has a wd sub will receive a letter regarding your subscription.

  25. Not happy with the new model - and I will tell you why: Good Issue or Bad Issue (and I don't think any have been bad), I get the magazine. I don't think the voucher/coupon system is good, because now I have to worry about stocking these coupons and fishing them out when I go to my local GW.

GW is hedging there bets that you will purchase their subscription, get the coupon and then lose the tickets. BTW - I think it is illegal in the state of California to purchase a gift card/coupon with legal tender and then put an expiration date on said gift card/coupon. So GW is going to get push back on this.

The new magazine is great - looks great and all. But I want to purchase my subscription and have it mailed to my local GW store and I want to ensure it will be there an in my name. It isn't that big of a deal. On the flip side, if an issue is 'awesome' and I don't make it to my GW store and it 'sells' out before I can turn in my coupon/voucher - I am going to be one very unhappy subscriber - I don't even think you can call us subscribers if we buy into this program.

Think I will get the subscription mailed to my home for the extra $20 and GW will just lose out on me going to the store anymore and impulse purchasing their stuff. Too Bad!!!
