When it comes to digital platforms, there are many people that are not on the Iphone or Ipad. Having only one operating system for Games Workshop products has been a sore spot for many people, obviously for  the ones not on those products.

In a recent discussion I was having with an anonymous source, the topic did come up. Here is a quick rundown of what was said.

-The plan is to do wide digital releases on multiple platforms. However they just have not caught up with the tech yet.

-It was a big deal starting off with iTunes, and they just have not been able to get to the Andriod and Windows platforms yet.

-Patience is the keyword, as GW products will not be apple exclusive in the near future.

The quick conclusion to this is, and it is logical, don't worry, it is coming.

    2. Not if you have used the digital ones.

No, I don't mean "seen pics of it" or "looked at it for 20 min". I mean actually read the thing, or tried to use it to think about building an army.

Don't get me wrong, I love mine, they are very cool. They are great "coffee table books". They are not "reference" books.

You would think the opposite would be true with the cross referencing and all of that.
But navigation is still slow, and the presentation is no conducive to the mental processes of list building.
Especially in a codex you don't know everything already.

If this sounds subjective and hard to quantify, it is.... thats why the first part is "if you have actually used it..."

  2. More importantly, are they going to do codices and books on iPod Touch or iPhone? More people have those than iPads.

    1. the format they have chosen is not conducive to those formats (use it for two min, that will make sense).

Its not a book, its an app...and that app does not scale well.

  5. Good to know there are plans to make this available to android devices. The thought being Iphone/ Ipad only is kind of silly to me.

    1. Ummm, this is pretty big news bro, especially if the source is correct.

I see no reason why GW wouldn't do this. It's good business for them. Makes no sense to alienate customers that use other devices.

But still good to know my droid wont be lonely.

  9. Seriously? It's not even like the products are that good honestly. The painting guides have god awful pictures.

This whole butt hurt reaction that Android and Windows device users have will never go away. Even when they release the products people will complain that they don't hold up, or are buggy.

The app store is where it's at. Sorry for anyone who doesn't have an Apple device, but really, is this the first time you've had to deal with this? Grow up, move on, maybe you'll get the stuff eventually, maybe not.

Well i like android more. But thats just me. Apple is nice but saying EVERYONE is doing it wrong isnt really cool.

    4. No JayDee, I'm not trying to imply that. Most people I know have Androids. They don't complain when they don't get an app though, it's just on to the next thing. People take this way too seriously IMO.

    5. Well why cant everyone enjoy this content? Should it just be for Apple people and just totally leave us Droids out in the cold for no reason?

      Just curious

      Delete
    6. Everyone should be able to enjoy the content. But that's impossible... Like I said the painting guide pictures are subpar, and anyone who wants to pay 40$ for a codex they already own has to be somewhat let down.

That being said, they should port. You shouldn't be in the cold so to speak.

But seriously, the constant whining is pointless. They clearly have to develop for the other platforms, and that will take time and money to accomplish.

This didn't need a post from Faeit IMO, pretty common sense.

    7. I don't think it's an oversight. From the responses in the post, I think it's more a question of not being able to immediately deliver the content in a way that is acceptable to GW, either in quality, delivery, protection of copyright, or all of the above. It's possible GW would need an entirely new app written in order to meet their criteria for Android and that is not as easy as it may seem.

    8. well they can either sell the book on android to me day 1, or i download it day 2 from one of the million people who scan it and then maybe consider buying the hard copy later... maybe.what am i saying? i would take it if it was on the google store anyway, but i am more likely to pay for it if its an option.

    9. All my codices are scans, and they look fine next to the GW offerings in iBooks.

  13. "The technology hasn't caught up yet..."

Basically saying they aren't gonna release their stuff on other platforms until they are sure that they can wring the 45 dollars for each digital codex out of you without it being pirated and distributed for free.

As much as I love my Nook for reading, I'll be buying a hard copy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. don't understand why they cant just release them for PC, too. fairly sure more people have a computer than a mobile device (I don't have one).

and, "piracy" would be a silly reason to not release them digitally that way. there is already "free" book scans everywhere on the internet. not releasing them digitally on the PC is just making more people "pirate" them, its the only way they can get them digitally.

now, I don't steal stuff, I own the actual books. it would be nice to have those full colour updated digital codex on my PC, though. but, in the end, nothing beats having the actual physical book. as long as they keep printing books, Im good.

    1. I think the major draw to digital products in regards to codices is GW updating them when FAQ's release. Books rule, errata blows. Always lose the sheet or watch it accumulate more wrinkles than my Sunday best.

      Delete
    2. Awesome while you download them for free ( ITs called piracy by the way) your taking future funds away from the very people that make the game you love. that is used to make future releases and improve the range of products they sell. Gw puts almost all of its money back into production and design. Good for you with your free scanned codex but don't you dare comment on the timing or quality of a release again EVER. Yes their product is not cheap, but it's also incredible, if you don't pay money for it you lose all rights to comment on anything that relates to it. Go play with your ripped off rule book and your free codex. Hope you enjoy it.

      Delete
    3. Frankly your comment doesn't make sense. You imply because he doesn't buy the digital copies (which don't exist) GW isn't making the money to make more products???

Keep in mind he said he already owned all the paper books.

I wasn't aware you could prebuy digital products from GW to speed up their development. If you could I might actually consider it.

  15. As I've posted before. I asked the people making the digital products when they would be released on other platforms. They said they are using Apple software to make them so it could be a while.

  18. As an app developer myself I can attest that it's a non trivial problem to solve in many cases. The new Psychic Powers app is the best candidate for going to other platforms, as it is an actual app. The cost of making it for iOS isn't too different to making it for Windows or Android. Of course whether they'll make their money back is another matter. Android is notorious for not being as financially viable for apps as iOS and Windows Phone is still fairly new.

Now as for the various books, it wouldn't be too hard to take these to other platforms like Android, Windows Phone, Kindle and even the iPhone. However, you would lose ALL the interactive content if you took the easy option. So no 360º images, no image galleries. You'd also lose a lot of the formatting options. In order to get an equal experience to the iPad they'd have to build and release apps (which rules out the Kindle). And let me tell you that building apps for codices and such for each platform is non-trivial and would likely be rather costly.

This isn't to say that GW won't do all this. It's just that the reason they went with iOS first is that they are a business and iOS provides the best opportunity for them to make a return on their investment on their products. If you're trying something new you want to give it the best possible chance of success to begin with, then you can expand it later

  19. I'm curious how many people complaining about price will wind up pirating GW's apps when they come to other platforms. Time will tell.
