Now we have some rules to see for exactly what we are getting in the Dark Vengeance Starter Set. While these are the basic rules, and will be expanded upon when we receive the codex, they are exciting to get a glimpse at.

via Andy (from my inbox on Faeit 212)
the boxed set rules are just the basic rules, ramped up in complexity as the missions go on with a few USR thrown in for flavour.

Though to be fair, if new FAQs were up for a moment and this guy happened to see them early, good on him. Would have been nice to see.

As it is, I hope the Dark Ones take your soul and feed upon it for eternity.

    1. no "if" about it, GW wouldn't have released a starter set with ha;lf the units it it being new units if we didn't have a new codex coming soon

      Delete
    2. The rules for these new units are in the box. They don't need a codex to play. This alone does not make a new codex a guarantee. Why do people keep saying it does?

Daemons got more units. All the rules were on a few pieces of paper - just like this.

What am I overlooking? Let me know what I am missing.

    4. Hahahaa, indeed. He's right. No new units but the cultist (new models, yes, but even the Helbrute plays the same as a dreadnaught).

Where is this "if"-hammer you speak of?

Sorry what? wheres the points costs? wheres all the Special rules for the Hellbrute?...... how the hell am I supposed to use these units outside of the box set? there HAS to be a new codex coming out otherwise it makes no sense, seeing as they have designed new models for 40k (Messers Hellbrute and Cultists im looking at you) it seems strange that they would only be in the Starter Boxset

      Delete
    6. yup, no one thought it would happen but there ya go, cultists with no rules for 40k. yet more evidence someone at GW has lost the plot.

      Delete
    7. ohhhhhhh...THAT "if"-hammer.....

      Great points. You win.

There must be a codex coming. It FEELS so obvious because that conclusion just makes sense. And I agree with it. You're right, because there are no points values listed for these units, how do we use them?

But that's still speculation. If only we KNEW. I just...can't be hurt again...sniff...

Natfka? Any new Chaos rumors here?

  5. I worry that we will not get a chaos codex before ''GW favourite race''. Chaos need their update NOW!

  10. What's with the chosen's leadership! Not liking that change, and no fearless
And the cultist being leadership 7 could be a problem was hoping for 8 the leader will be picked out easy enough

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm fine with the cultist's Ld (it's identical to guardsmen along with the rest of their stats)
I have no idea why chosen are Ld9 though. They should be fearless or at least Ld10. What sort of chaos space marine, chosen by the gods of chaos, would be just as likely to run as if he didn't have the backup/favour of gods? I would assume being chosen gives you a bit more Ld.

      Delete
    2. Champion will probably be lead 10, and remember, fearless isn't the best. If the Chosen get into a fight they can't win for some reason, having a basic leadership will allow them to duck out of it, instead of waiting to die.

      Delete
    3. Remember in 6th you can opt out of fights you can't hurt the enemy in.

      Delete
    4. Champion is only ld9 and still only has 2 attacks according to this data sheet. It's really dumb.

      Delete
    5. Doctor Bored, CSM don't get ATSKNF so no ducking out of fights, only running away! Fearless has no downsides any more so sorry they not fearless. A leadership drop was rumoured for CSM...

      Delete
    6. can't see the chosen rules either? are they there or have they been left out like helbrute? No more infiltrate! NO MORE!?!?! *runs away in terror*

      Delete
    7. No they're talking about the fact that fearless units can't make an our weapons are useless retreat

      Delete
  11. I don't understand how this works really, I mean.. Will these units be in the new codex? Cause all rumours say that no new characters will appear and here comes random dude Kranon and his random chosen? Can you only play with this with starter ed "special rules"?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Kranon's just there for fluff purposes. He's just a generic chaos lord.

      Delete
    2. Since the only way to get these particular models/units is through the purchase of the box set, I see no issue with them having new or unique rules.
As for if you can include them into a larger CSM army, that's going to depend entirely on the people you play with. I shouldn't anticipate any issue if you ask first and let your opponent see the rules themselves for reference.

      Delete
    3. Sorry, that first line should read "...to get these particular models *right now*..."

Chances are they'll show up in the codex whenever it's updated.

      Delete
    4. You could just use the counts as rule for most of the models for now. The sword the lord has looks more like a daemon weapon than Abbadons so no problems there. Only one I could see being a slight problem (if you are nit picky), are the cultists but even then they could count as funky Guard allies.

    1. GW loves smurfs only, all traitors have their fun not in winning games, but in whining before and after them.

      Delete
    2. I don't really see the problem...they just made chosen similar to vanilla vets, 2 basic attacks. This makes melee chosen actually viable...
Regarding the morale, csm were already rumoured to get a leadership drop, this would seem to strengthen this rumour

      Delete
    3. Vanilla vets also have ATSKNF. I know rumours say they're getting a leadership drop, but it doesn't explain why chosen would have the same LD as regular chaos marines with a champion

      Delete
    4. Buy an icon of chaos glory: reroll failed morale. Also its base 2 attacks, but is that including the bonus for have a pistol and ccw? Probably not, just like our current dex.

      Delete
    5. No one knows for sure what marks and icons will be like in the new dex, and in the old one it just takes someone to kill that bannerman and suddenly your squad becomes retarded and forget that they're worshipping Chaos Undivided.

      Delete
  13. No heavy flamed on the dreadnought. I sure hope that's just a dumbed down version for the starter and not an indicator of what's coming.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. As with previous starter's, there is no customization of the units right out of the box. Presumably the Helbrute will be able to take a HF but it will come in the Helbrute kit. Obviously you'll be able to change its loadout when the full dex comes out.

The lack of point values is a bit irritating.

      Delete
    2. With the way the Hellbrute model has been moulded you can easily remove the melta nozzles and replace them with something suitably 'falmery'.

      Andy.

      Delete
    3. Woops... that should read 'flamery'. Sorry.

      Delete
    4. @anon above
A normal dreadnought (chaos or imperial) gets a heavy weapon, a DCCW and a bolster or heavy flamer.

Now that I think about it. The reason he has a power fist is so they don't need to include rules for DCCW

      Delete
    5. As far as no pts values i agree its irritating but the missions don't need pt values and they probably don't want to give anything away with both codicies coming out soon

      Delete
    6. Falmery? I thought we where in 41 millennium not skyrim?

      Delete
  14. I was curious about the army size, so I looked it up.
The Dark Angels without the Chaplain is 840 pts. With the Chaplaing they come to a total of 975 pts of dark angels.
Which is an awesome deal, as I've worked out the averages before and most armies come to about $100 per 1000 pts. and this is just $110 for almost 1000 pts of DA, plus the chaos and the minirulebook!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure about the chaos pts, bc we don't have pt costs for cultists or hellbrute yet

      Delete
    2. its a shame chaos seems to have about half that :P

      Delete
    3. $100 per 1000 points? You must mean with every extra option added in, and even then it'd be limited to MeQ. Nids are lucky to break a playable 500 points on $100, and I imagine Guard is similar.

      Delete
    4. Yeah, I don't know chaos that well, but to me it seems to add up to only about 600 pts.
Can any of you chaos players out there help us out?

      Delete
    5. @Maeloke: Sorry, typo. I meant $150 per 1000 pts, I've averaged at $150 per 1000 pts in three of my armies. This include my Necrons, Dark Angels and my fantasy Lizardmen

      Delete
    6. With Chaos Lord, Hellbrute treated like a Chaos Draednought and Chosen's it's 395pts, don't have an idea how treat Cultist so you probably have to add equivalent of Imperial Guard cost.

      Delete
    7. In the earlier leaked ching chong list, cultists were 4 points a model I believe.

      Delete
    8. Seriously? Ching chong? Could you get more racist?

      Delete
    9. here is a rough working out of a list i could conjure up for chaos.

Chaos lord + plasma pistol + power weapon (or daemon weapon) + melta bombs = 125-150 points

      Chosen + x6 + aspiring champion + x6 melta bombs + x4 power weapons = 208

Hell brute (dreadnaught costs) + multi-melta + extra dreadnaught close combat weapon + extra armour = 125

If cultists are around 4 points per model and assume the champion upgrade is about 10 points. Basic cost per squad could be 50 points per squad without any more upgrades e.g. shot guns, extra close combat weapons, chaos marks/icons.

      483 points without cultists
      583 with cultists.

      Delete
  15. Anyone notice the typo's yet? In the chaos overview the hellbrute has A2, in the helbrute specific entry it has A3, Go GW

    2. Almost 100% certain these are dumbed down for beginners. There's going to be special rules for pretty much all of the csm units in this box I'd wager...

      Delete
  21. So the Hell Brute has 2 attacks in the first pic and 3 in the second.

I was all like 'only two attacks!?'

    1. GW aren't really well known for their spectacular proof reading team now are they?

      Delete
    2. Or maybe they really are trolls who just want to see players tear each other apart over the rules before it's FAQ'd a year later... and they say GW hates Chaos.

      Delete
    3. Ha. Roll off i guess to see which one it uses. 2 or 3.

      Delete
  24. So the Chaos lord, Helbrute (counting as a dreadnought) and Chosen come out to 413 points. So those are either some very expensive freaking cultists or the Helbrutes got a big point increase for not going crazy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Helbrutes are rumoured to still have crazed.

      Delete
    2. Then it would seem that my Chaos brethren are about to get the warp kicked out of them. I can not see those 2 squads of cultists pulling out 600 points worth of awesome.

      Delete
    3. Well of course not. Starter sets are designed to be imbalanced. The reason they do this is so new players can come in for a demo game and play the "good guys" and easily wipe out the "bad guys".

      Delete
    4. Also going off of rumours, the Helbrute is 120 base, cultists are 4 pts per model. That's about all we know in terms of pricing.

      Delete
  25. Yeah new models to use in our games....but without listed prices....so we can't use them at all. What's the point of releasing new models without the offical guides first? Cultist's and hellbutes are worthless without a point system to allow for comparison. Where is the new Chaos Space Marine Codex?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The point is that they can run demo games with the starter set.

      Delete
    2. They could release a FAQ for the new models when the set drops. I wouldnt hold my breath but hey.

      Delete
    3. Well the description says the Helbrute IS a dreadnought, so that is completely usable still. You'll get cultist rules soon enough, chill out, waiting a few weeks for the rules to use a unit isn't worth getting angry at.

I'd hope for a FAQ but that won't be that helpful.

We need codex releases, and soon...

  28. if the csm rules are reflective of what's in the codex, i'm probably going to quit 40k.
I'm hoping though that if the rules are the way they are represented in the images, then the point cost is going to be DRASTICALLY less than any other meq. maybe then i'll run blob marines. won't that be fun?
