For all you fluffy bunnies out there, here is the story behind Dark Vengeance and a bit of insight into the characters within the two forces.

To start of there is a novel in the set is based on by C Z Dunn and is in limited supply on Black Library so go and check that out if it interests you.

So, first off the Dark Angels. At the core they are the 5th Company led by newly appointed Company Master Balthasar formally of the Deathwing. Also accompanied by members of the 1st Company, the Deathwing, members of the 2nd Company, the Ravenwing, and a librarian by the name of Turmiel.

The task force is out for revenge for the predecessor of Balthasar, Company Master Zadakiel at the hands of the Crimson Slaughter's Helbrute. Hence the name of the box set Dark Vengeance.

The Crimson Slaughter, formerly the Crimson Sabres Chapter but were declared renegade in M41 following signs of psychological  instability and over zealous prosecution of their campaigns. Led by former Chapter Master Sevastus Kranon now Kranon the Relentless. They are accompanied by a fearsome Helbrute, Mortis Metalikus, who was once Sevarion Kranon, actual brother of Sevastus. After refusing to give in to the blood frenzy that claimed his chapter he was imprisoned by his brother and driven mad before finally being entombed within the metal sarcophagus of a Helbrute.

The Crimson Slaughter are on the planet, Bane's Landing, seeking The Hellfire Stone, which once anointed with the blood of a Space Marine will open a gateway to the warp and allow a powerful deamon of Khorne to enter from. However it appears that Kranon the Relentless seeks it to release his chapter from their bloodthirsty curse and silence the voices in his head once and for all.

  3. So is the Crimson Slaughter a Khorne army like the World Eaters? I thought they were painted as Word Bearers at first glance.

    1. It says they are bloodthirsty, I couldn't find anywhere where it said they are Khorne exclusively.

    2. Yeah I don't think they worship Khorne, they were cursed by Khorne to hear the voices of those they slaughter screaming all the time, and the only thing that stops it is to kill more people and even then the respite is temporary. They actually heroically went into the warp so that they wouldn't kill the innocent to stop the screaming, but obviously the warp did its thing, and they are now more or less chaos space marines.

    Nice fluff

  5. Hmm, I prefer to think of them as Word Bearers myself from a modeling standpoint.

I like this story, I find it interesting.

  7. Bleh, new wave traitors, daemon of Khorne. I'm disappointed. Going to treat them as Tzeench followers or, maybe, if new CSM dex will be juicy enough, as Word Bearers.

  8. BTW, shouldn't 'formally' in the sentence about Captain Balthasar's past be 'formerly'? Looks like a typo.

  9. It's the fluff that keeps bringing me back to 40k. No other game like it. I really like the twist on the hellbrute not being a willing participant originally. Can't wait!!!

  10. The librarians sword looks very similar Ezekiels. Any word if he has been replaced in the fluff? This guy even has a similar (though opposite) bionic eye.

    1. I believe the librarian was tutored by Ezekiel

    2. I honestly think these three heroes are meant to be usable proxys for the three famous albeit dated heroes that wont be getting new sculpts. My idea was shot down by one comments, but I think hes wrong. Note how similiar the helm is on the captain to the lion helm, and notice he has a combi-plasma gun. Paint that sword black, and you have a perfect Azrael. The librarian goes without saying (although I would add the book he has to the discussion). The real question is the chappie. He's obviously modelled off the cover of the 4th rulebook, but don't be surprised that, if asmodai comes back, he'll come standard with a plasma pistol

    3. All the company masters have helms like that... and if it was Azrael he wouldn't be wearing it. Not even the Big A is worthy to wear the helm of the lion!... the feathered lion i guess...

    4. @cam
      Ofc they looK alike
All captains have winghelm @ a powersword made from the Rock of caliban! Only sometimes they change wargear.

I guess the Lib Looks very alike bur he is missing the mouth Cover & the Bionic is side swaped.

The chap Looks nothing like Asmodai. No sword but Plasma and the Helm is wrong. The sword had spez rules & fluff so its unlikely they will drop that. And i'm quit Sure Saphon had a sword too.

We'll have to wait & See dex

  12. Sounds like a rebelling Khorne servant. Seeking to silence the blood thirst and stop a greater daemon but after imprisoning his brother for not giving in? Does this imply regret or plain old chaos insanity? I'd question which chaos god would act directly against Khorne. Or maybe Kranon thinks he's acting on his own which would suggest manipulation by Tzeentch. Either way could be interesting fluff. Chaos vs chaos subversion or kneeling before the Interrogator.

  13. Not fantastic fluff, but then it is just starter set material. I can't really say I was hoping for anything more once I knew they were using some random renegade chapter instead of a Traitor Legion. I get why they did that (so the Legion fanboys - like me - won't bitch about how their baby lost a battle), but it does make everything feel less epic because it detracts from the whole "The Long War" thing CSM have going for them.

Never mind, no biggie... If I get the set they'll be Night Lords anyway. Ave Dominus Nox.

  14. Khorne cursed them to ensure more slaughter would follow as their only reprieve is granted after commiting atrocity. The crimson slaughter do not wish to serve khorne and are actively seaking to silence their torture (his blessing). Of course it is probably all just a plan of the blood god to have his true servant released from the artifact

  16. Meh i didn't expect an amazing battle to the last man anyway.the csm models are nice and new units will be fun to play with. It's a good sign of the csm dex right around the corner, if 1/2 the rumors are true it will make us pretty effective on the table.

You knew the moment you saw 20 cultists vs plasma spam they would all die lol not suprising.

What is it with people pushing tthis DA next thing anyway? I'm not sure if they are trolling or deluded.
