The new miniatures for the Age of Sigmar and Warcry are two monsters....... the Mindstealer Sphiranx and the Fomorid Crusher. Lets take a look at them.
The Mindstealer Sphiranx
The Mindstealer Sphiranx is, for 100 points, a brilliant choice in any Chaos army – particularly those using lots of smaller units who don’t want to lose out on activations. Ravagers forces, which will generally have a good number of Heroes and various small units of Marauders and Cultists running about, will find the Mindstealer Sphiranx’s Dominate Mind ability allows them to get stuck in without getting squished first!
Don’t forget about the Mindstealer Sphiranx’s Telepathic Dread ability, either. Offering a -2 Bravery malus* on units within 12”, it’s a great way to maximise damage to the enemy in the battleshock phase. Combine it with the -1 malus from Chaos Knights, an additional -1 from the Icon Bearer found in Marauder and Marauder Horsemen units, then another -1 from the Helm of the Oppressor Ravagers artefact and you’re inflicting a total of -5 – enough to make even Stormcast Eternals flee after minimal casualties!
The Fomoroid Crusher
At 100 points, the Fomorid Crusher is a bargain, boasting solid characteristics and a hefty 10 Wounds. What the Fomoroid Crusher brings to a Chaos army is some very welcome shooting. You’ll want to use the Fomoroid to snipe out enemy Heroes who refuse to get pummeled by your forces on the front lines, as well as shooting down any stragglers tying up your forces and preventing you from charging. Say you’ve got a unit of Chaos Knights currently engaged with Clanrats – just splat the rats with your Fomoroid and you’re free to crush some worthier prey!
Fomoroids are also brilliant against armies that increase the density of scenery on the board. Let’s say your Sylvaneth-playing friend has packed the table with Wyldwoods. To your opponent, they’re a valuable source of cover and a way to rapidly redeploy. To you, they’re a potential source of massive damage thanks to Insurmountable Strength!
