Cult Mechanicus Formations

The Cult Mechanicus Kastelan Robots go up for pre-orders tomorrow, and already we are seeing information that I am assuming is from next week, Cult Mechanicus formations look like they have will have some decent powers once we get more details and can read the fine print.

Please remember that these are early rumors.

Cult Mechanicus has 4 formations.

Cohort Cybernetica- all models in the formation are fielded as a single unit and robots can fire at different targets
1 Tech-Priest Dominus-gets the rules for the Cybernetica Datasmith
2 Kastelan Robot Maniples

Elimination Maniple-gain +1 BS and ignore cover
2-3 units of Kataphron Destroyers
1-3 Kastelan Robot Maniples

Numinous Conclave- must have equal numbers of each type of unit gain crusader and re-roll wounds
2-3 Fulgurite Electro-Priests
2-3 Corpuscarii Electro-Priests

Holy Requisitioner-Deep Strike with no error
1 Tech-Priest Dominus
2-3 units of Kataphron Breachers

    1. Yep. It's tough, either between that or the deep striking. Ignores Cover might just win out on the Heavy Phosphor Blasters and Plasma/Grav.

  2. So those robots who already put out more MEQ damage per shooting round than jetbikes all of a sudden can get even better at BS4 AND ignores cover? Glad my power armor will save me... oh wait...

Seriously if you complain about scatterbikes but NOT these robit guys you're a hypocrite.

    1. Don't forget that they're T7 W3 3+ MCs

    2. Don't forget that the rest of the Eldar codex is just as broken as those scatterbikes, whereas this is one unit out of a grand total of like 6 different units available in this codex.

You really can't compare the two.

    3. I wasn't agreeing with Defenestratus, just stating what will make these robots fun

    4. I think these formations are heavily balanced by the alleged points costs we've seen reported. High firepower, low model count. Don't be afraid of them.

    5. Yup, if Ad Mech stuff (inc Skitarii) is anything it's not cheap. I drew up a 500pt list for a game with them on Weds and it was 17 models with one upgrade.

A single Kastelan Maniple is 290pts. If Kataphrons really are 50pts each (and they can be fielded as single models like the Castellax) that second Formation is 10 points shy of 400 right off the bat. That's a fair chunk for just 5 models...

      Delete
    6. Skitarii are certainly not a horde army. Cult Mechanicus, even less so. I don't mind though since it means less models I have to buy! B-)

    7. This unit does not put out more shots then equal points in Scatbikes, even with the commands to double the shoulder weapon rate of fire.

    8. DrBored: Sure I can. People are irate that jetbikes can take 10 scatter lasers because of the number of Str 6 shots it can put out. Well... these robots are tougher and have MUCH BETTER shooting than the jetbikes for just a paltry 40pts more than a maxed scatterbike squad.

Its a perfectly reasonable and logical comparison and it perfectly highlights the total, complete, overwhelmingly illogical reaction to the Eldar codex.

    9. Except that the robots are 290 pts for 2 and categorically DO NOT put out more shots than jetbikes.

10 scatterbikes or cannonbikes outshoot this unit on a mobile platform. The robots need to stand still and use their protocol to even come close.

    10. @Samuel Sanchez,

Against MEQ, two of them do more wounds than scatterbikes even before you take into consideration the formation +1BS.

    11. entire codex relentless, this alredy make them op so much exploit with that .....

    12. Since nobody is willing to do the mathhammer themselves and just keep spouting off ignorance...
      Against T4 Sv3+
      10x Jetbikes Str6 Ap6 BS4 - 7.4 unsaved wounds
      2x Robots standing still shooting Str6 Ap3 BS3 with TWL 6shots (12 not) - 8.75 unsaved wounds

Not to mention the robots are T7 MC's with FNP if I recall correctly compared to what amounts to an assault marine in toughness and mobility. Have you ever had a hard time killing assault marines?

      Delete
    13. Against light vehicles and troops with 2+ or 5+ saves the scatterbikes are much better. Don't compare one thing and say they're better just cos they're better vs MEQ :)

      Delete
    14. Well, to be fair, Space Marines are the most common army in many areas...

      Delete
    15. Why are people comparing a Heavy Support choice that's designed to kill targets with a 3+ save or worse with a Troop choice that's ultra-mobile and designed to combat hordes and snatch objectives? Entirely different roles, of course the HS choice should have a superior killing capacity.

It's 400 points of 5 models, just tie them up in assault with something fast like bikes or use Assault Terminators or grav weapons or snipe out the Datasmith to reduce their damage output - he's their vulnerability (not that he's that vulnerable lol).

But still, if Marines are up after the Ad Mech you may get a bump in power somehow to level things out a bit...

    16. first i'm hearing about scatbikes being a problem, WK's well i will complain all day about, scatbikes....easy enough to deal with.

      Delete
    17. lol @ the dude saying since the Robits are OP, everyones "total, complete, and overwhelmingly illogical" reaction to the Eldar codex. Drink bleach retard.
Protip: there can be more than one unbalanced/overpowered unit in the game.

      Delete
    18. we already heard that kataphrons will be min 3 in a squad, so that formation will cost like 600 points, not 400. However yeah i agree that ignores cover is a bit silly on so much firepower units...

      Delete
    19. Hmm lets see 10 scatbikes are 270 points for 40 stregnth 6 shots hitting on 3's 2 kastellans are 320 pts for 6 twinlinked strength 6 ap 3 shots and 6 non twinlinked shots hitting on 4's I fail to see how these are so much better then scatbikes

      Delete
    20. well if they are in this formation and use the stance to stay still and shoot, they have 6 twin linked and 12 not twin linked S6 AP3 shots hitting on 3's and ignoring cover, and then reducing cover saves for anything else that shoots at that target. Pretty good. Plus we don't know what the hymns do yet, they might be even better for all we know...

      Delete
    21. Exactly so we now add another 300 pts for the formation so theres another 10 scat bikes then we remember that to use the double shooting stance I say at the end of my turn im doing it so the scat bikes can just get out of range easily enough and everyone else can scatter so I dont have LOS

      Delete
    22. Also, when using the Protocols to double the top-weapon's output you have to announce it *the turn before it comes into effect*. A decent heads-up to get out of LOS or range and now their Baymaxes are literally standing around doing not a lot.

    23. yeah that is a good point, but you could use this to your advantage to scare off the opponent and solidify your control over the middle of the table. I'll have to test it before making final judgement though. It does seem good but not broken so far, which most things should be. However the ignores cover might be a bit too much...

  3. If these are true.... dang. I was thinking of holding off for the AdMech book and skipping this one, but these formations are amazing. Even if one ends up getting full AdMech, running these Formations alongside is totally worthwhile.

    1. We still don't know if GW will offer an Adeptus Mechanicus codex. That's only an assumption. For all we know they could keep the Skitarii and Cult codexes separate, expanding each one with new units later on.

    2. It's been known for weeks. As well as an unreleased Skitarii painting guide. It was on the cover of the admech unit poster leaked a while back...

  5. Just a quick question for those with knowledge and power:

What role (if any) do ordinary Tech Priests have in the Cult Mechanicus codex? I've read the rumours but there was no mention of basic Tech Priest Engineers being an option.

    1. they don't have them. it's marine techpriest/imp guard, admech use techseers (i think) techpriests are slightly more knowledgeable than a servitor compared with a proper AM techseer.....this is from dubious sources online. make of it as you will.

    3. Has no-one ever read anything about Roman Legions? Plus GW have always liked a not so subtle joke.

    4. I refer you to your country's modern education system. History in particular has been dumbed down to the level of an advertisement on the telly. There are exceptions of course but this has been the trend.

  8. So the only bonus for running the cybernetica cohort is that every automata can shoot at a different target, rather than if you took a maniple and simply 2 robots have to shoot at the same target. Pales in comparison to the elimination maniple, and the holy requisitioner (depending on how good they are in melee).

  9. I got the WD early. Sadly only the Datasmith has Feel No Pain, not the Kastelans, unless you activate the Aegis Protocol. So either you go for extra durability, or you boost lethality. It's a tough choice that has to be made each turn.

On the other hand, you can easily add up two spare Techpriests models as additional Datasmiths, for 50 bolt pistols per model.

Overall I'm just not sure Kastelans are worth the points with only BS 3 and WS 3. I think Knights might offer better value for not many more points.

    1. lol bolt pistols is a great way of counting the army's worth

    2. Yeah thats something i have pondered about, especially with the new dakka knights with all the guns you can get now.

Trying to figure if i get a crusader knight, or if i wait for the cult mech.

  10. Does the shooting protocol actually bypass the MC limit of shooting two weapons? If not the scatter bike comparison falls down. You wouldnt gain a benefit if you were armed full phosphor. Though you could keep the torrents n double up on them which could cause your opponent to redirect his hordes for a turn
