I am rather excited about the new direction for White Dwarf. Codex updates are exciting, and are something I am now looking forward to with renewed interest. So tonight I thought I would take a look at the latest White Dwarf for August and then open up the new Munitorum Dice Sets. These dice are nice, and I was quick to pick up 24 of the standard dice and one of each set (the objective marker dice and vehicle damage dice).

20 Comments:

  1. Yeah, I also picked up both, and I gotta say, GW is heading in a pretty awesome direction, it's looking like. Also, the image on the spine is almost done now!

  2. Picked up the objectives and vehicle damage sets. Personally i feel that they are too light and feel a bit cheap (though its probably just the matrial). I still don't trust GW dice. There mostly garbage in my opinion.

    1. I agree with you on the cheap dice. What brand do you use? I'm a big fan of nicely rounded, heavy dice.

    2. I played a game Sat night and i actually rolled better with the new dice compared to my normal dice :-)

    3. "nicely rounded" dice are not the best choice. Studies have shown rounded dice roll 1's about 22% of the timr. Ideally you want casino dice., but big, squared-off, dice with numerals rather than dots are the best choice for gamers. Small, rounded dice with dots are about as bad as you can choose.

    4. Sei, I will help you on your dice. Like I said in the video, I am a bit of a dice fanatic, so I will repost and add to a post I did 2 years ago on dice. Its very explanatory.

These new dice might be light, but so are my other "good" high quality dice. Do not think that light dice is a cheap dice. These are very nice dice in quality.

    5. The wright is not necessarily an issue. After all, light dice are more likely to bounve around and randomise better. The square edges are a vast improvement. Any idea anyone what kind of plastic they used? A thermosetting plastic would be much better. The lasgun mag is cute. I'm sure I'll lose mine to my boys.

    6. Sei: Depends on the game system. For Warmachine/Hordes I use Chessex's 16mm Rounded dice since they will tumble more while for Warhammer 40k I use 16mm sharper corner version (there not chessex. I got a 100d6 pack from Amazon for under $20. http://www.amazon.com/100-Off-White-Dice-16mm/dp/B005HWKVFA/ref=sr_1_29?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1343673066&sr=1-29&keywords=100+dice) with pits for less tumbling.

Natfka: I don't think that light dice equal cheap but I do think that light dice feel cheap.

As for dice for rolling I think players need to look into whether or not they want there dice to tumble more or less and how they feel are big important factors. I refuse to buy d6's with written digits on them since I feel that they role as good as GW's bubbly d6's.

    7. Just remember though that pips in the dice often influence rolls. Add that to rounded edges, and you increase the % of 1's that come up drastically on the dice.

Painted on numbers dice allow for a more balanced dice, and chessex dice in particular go through a very rigorous amount of tumbling to polish the dice. This often leads to unbalanced dice that are not exactly square. Stack your dice many times up and no two sets are exactly the same hieght. Most dice do not stand up to a 32 dice hieght and match up.

What makes a good dice is squared edges, no pips, and less tumbling (polishing) during the manufacturing of the dice. Balance is the key.

I have a very detailed dice post coming up later tonight.

  3. I seriously wish they had unified the chariots and made them all vehicles, not just the one, with the Khorn and tchench one being still just modifiers to the herald's stat lines. I understand that they don't want to hamper themselves in regards to makeing new chariots down the line, but the result is very jarring and kludgy.

    1. A magazine that shows off their new product and talks about them, then has battle reports using them and the new edition is what you have. That is what in my opinion the magazine should be about. So its more than a catalogue (i cant spell this word).

    2. Depends on how they talk about them. The quality in the past has been pretty much just advertising. Battle reports need to highlight rules and/ or units like your sections on rules have done ( beautifully written by the way, thank you! )

. The trick is they need to really support players, not just feed from them. Articles need to have a purpose besides just " buy me!"

  6. I too picked up the objective marker set. It does seem a bit cheaply made, but I love it none the less and found them very useful in game. Especially for keeping track of the effects of mysterious terrain. I looked through a friends WD, only worth picking up if you're a daemon player. Next months issue I will definitely buy.

  7. This WD has a lot of fillers in it once you're past the battle report. That seems to prove right the rumor of content being removed.

  8. Are the WD being shipped to peoples homes already? I wasn't sure when to expect mine... Just recently got a subscription a few weeks back.

  9. I agree with everyone's comments about the dice being very light. they seem to be decent quality, but I don't like how they feel in the hand.

I'm also very disappointed in the proofreading of the daemon update for 40K. In 6 pages I saw 2 different sets of stats for the seeker chariots and the exalted alluress. Considering that the aluress stats were the same in 3 locations and differnt in only one I am assuming that she is intended to be I=6 instead of I=5. I didn't check to see if the chariot had any ranged weapons where it would matter if the BS=4 or BS=0. This is just from a relatively quick skimming of the material to update data in battlescribe, so I don't know how many more errors are in that update.

  10. Looks like the Details of the Horus Heresy post might be off. Forgeworld had this to say about it on their FB page:

"Simon-don't believe everything you are told. Mainly because much of what you've been told is false :)"

  11. Instead of improving the quality of white dwarf with thoughtful articles and interesting rules/scenarios like chapter approved they instead sell content the used to provide for free
