Space Hulk: Deathwing- Rise of the Terminators

A new trailer from Focus Home Interactive is out for Space Hulk: Deathwing video game. Its a first person shooter and so far the game looks like its coming around nicely. While I have heard many people shout praises for this video, I find the music distracting and just not good (personal opinion). However, I can see the creativity and work they put into this video, so its definitely worth watching.

  1. I liked the music, it fits the mood of the trailer nicely. Not something Id ever listen to on my own, but it worked imo.

    1. Hands down, best music I've heard in a GW IP (which isn't saying much in and of itself, what we are used to is pretty bland)

    2. The music is Cantar del pueblo Andaluz, from south Spain (Andalusia, not Mexico), and it is used in religion celerations. Very gothic and grim indeed.

    3. Actually the music is a terrible Swiss band called Kadebostany. The music does not match the theme of the action. The music is some pathetic hipster song from a Euro band.

  2. Honestly I'm looking forward to it. Here's hoping the game doesn't flop. Also the music it's ok. Not the first thing to come to mind when I think of warhammer but I can dig it.

  3. I say we just recognize that the opinion on the music is quite split and move on.

I am excited about this game, and I thought the video was great. At the end of the day I just want to see some game play and mechanics videos.

  4. Wish DW was like this in the TT!
But then again stealers are quit like in the trailer ;D

  5. The music is awesome! In my opinion, it goes in a fresh new direction for a 40k video game. Not everyone is going to like the gothic chanting, and on top of that, branching out to find new things that enrich the universe keeps it from going stale. Bravo!

    1. Um no. Where does "Upbeat tejano music" fit into "Grim dark"? Nowhere

    2. Poppycock. The universe has the potential to be expanded like this quite a bit. And frankly, if the game is going to survive, it needs to evolve to attract more players, which means that it will need to appeal to a wider audience. One of the reasons why Space Marine failed to sell and why we will NEVER see sequels is because THQ targeted the already established 40k community, which isn't big enough to support the game. 40k needs to evolve with the times or it will fail.

    3. You mean that a company made a 40K game for *gasp* 40K fans!? If something alienates already existing fans then something is clearly wrong. Gothic chant type music might not be your thing, it's not mine, but it's 40K's in regards to the imperium and as such, music such as heard in the video has no place in the universe. What you're suggesting is a major overhaul of the universe to make it more appealing to the pop culture crowd. Never once have I looked at a video game trailer, decided i wasn't interested in the visuals, but holy crap their music choice all of a sudden makes me interesting in it! It doesn't work like that. If the visuals don't draw people in, then the music doesn't make a difference. Music should be gothic. Period.

Besides, it's not like 40K is going to go "stale" as you put it. Not a chance. The video games are a minor addition to the franchise honestly

    4. It's just a trailer. That music will not be featured in the finished game.

      Delete
    5. Considering how small GW's revenues are, and how widely known and respected their IP is, the fact that their games are a minor addition to the franchise is a clue as to how badly their games have done in a much larger and more lucrative industry than miniatures.

  7. Yea... I'm gonna need deathwing to be that awesome always!

  8. so it's essentially female grime for intro music or atleast this promo video. i think i might *semi* recognize who it could be. lol certainly not the kind of music that comes to mind. it's more epic grime that street battle grime/rap but still *well played, well played indeed*

game itself this video aside looks pretty cool. tons better than space marine at the very least.

  9. Pfft. Needs Blood Angels to be cool. Kidding aside it looks alright, but pre-rendered movies don't really do it for me. I'll reserve judgement until I see some actual gameplay. And what is with that music? Is Tarantino involved with this or something? So odd and it doesn't fit if you ask me. Nothing grim dark about that music.

    4. Thats the 2nd time I have read a post about Tarantino's involvement. Where is that coming from exactly?

    5. Agree Harrower but since GW does not want people playing the BA anymore who knows. Maybe they would give the models only abilities that worked on a charge, or leave them without any new weapons from the SM codex or the DA codex. Lol!

      Delete
    6. ClassicCarraway- it's a joke. Tarantino makes Mexican films. The music in the trailer is Mexican.

      Delete
    7. The music used in the video is inspired by Mexican music but it is a hipster crummy Swiss band. Not a Mexican in the band.

    3. It is Dark Angels. It would not matter if he rolled 1s anyway. He could just re-roll them. They really should take the gets hot out of 40k. It does not exactly make sense that any army would use a weapon that could kill the user one out of every six uses.

  12. The music is incredibly bizarre for a 40k game, even if it is just the trailer, but it is AWESOME at that. It’s like a Tarantino-esque soundtrack and I love it.

From the looks of it the game will feature a large number of unique versions of weapons (we see a smattering of different storm bolter designs, 2 different plasma cannons, etc.), plus different breeds of genestealer (ten bucks says the ones with boils and blisters on their backs rush towards the player and explode!)

    1. Spot on with Tarantino-esq, I thought it worked brilliantly. Gives me hope the game might be something innovative too!

  13. I think that the trailer was possibly the best trailer for a 40k game so far, not that this is a hugely high bar to cross.

And the music gave a pep and tempo to the action taking place on screen that the gothic chanting often fails to do.

However if they mixed in this sort of thing for intro/cut scenes or even just trailers maybe with some fusion of classical GWesque music for background ambiance (though with a better quality than the SM movie),

    1. Not just that, I feel confident in saying that this is one of the best game-trailers I have ever seen.

I've watched the video around a dozen times now and I can't believe how awesome it is.
The style, the editing, the music. It's great and it really fits together.
It gives the feeling of a 'spaghetti western' and a big showdown between Terminators and the Tyranids.
Anything with an orchestra or, God forbid, metal would have destroyed the trailer.

I prefer this over the "Deathwing Summer Trailer", which in my opinion was just a boring standard trailer that took the easy way out in its style and music-choice.

    2. Decent trailer, very stylish, but I hated the Nids mouths....tongue so big they can't even move their mouth LOL!

Video game trailers have been using obscure music (often directly opposite of the game scenes themselves) since that classic Gears of War commercial with "Mad World". When done well, its awesome.

  14. Do yourself a favor and just mute the video. Anything would be better than the terrible music they chose

  15. Music is meh, video is AWESOME!!!!!

I just hope there is more than just Genestealers to fight though as all sorts of things can inhabit Space Hulks... Imagine having a segment where you are walking through a dormant chunk of a Necron ship and its too quiet...

Also, Chaos is always fun but Orks are over used... Still they would be better than nothing.

    2. I imagine that will come down to GW and their licensing agreement. I know that the Space Hulk video game based on the board game was fairly limited in the scope of the license, and even after GW allowed them to do DLC for other chapters, and an expanded game (ascension) that broke out of the table top game's mechanics, they were still limited to terminators vs genestealers.

  19. Does anyone else remeber the 4 player skaven game for fantasy that was recently announced. Seeing a trend in GW marketing department. Modernise and revitalise all the thongs. Plus total war warhammer. Think they are seeing the benefits of reaching the digital generation.

  20. The Music choice was a serious misstep, but just go back and watch the "Deathwing summer trailer", they killed it with that one. I have high hopes for this game.

  21. lol, the music obviously isn't part of the game. But if they market this at Hobbyists instead of Gamers this game will flop!

  23. The game looks decent at a glance.. but I see alot of people using terms like "breath of fresh air" or "breath new life into 40k" about the music... music is NOT what will refresh the 40k universe, and all these people saying it are grasping at straws..

Too many of the games that have come out are borderline shovelware, and even the really good ones, don't sell as well as they should.. Space Marine didn't have.. whatever you want to call this music.. and did it NEED a breath of fresh air? Hell no. It needed a company that wasn't going bankrupt behind it.. I don't think fancy new music would have made the recent Space Hulk game any better aside from have a few gushing fanboys say shit like its new, edgy and different.. and still would have been a rough game when it was released..

It's just a trailer either way.

And that fan made recut makes it look a hell of alot more interesting.

    2. Space Marine was a great game, with the only real flaw being a bland multiplayer experience. However, you are right, the music doesn't make this game a hit, and since we haven't seen actual game play, there is still much doubt to be had.

That being said, this is the first console game for 40k since Space Marine. Comparing it to smart phone/tablet games is rather unfair. If this game comes in with as much fun and polish as Space Marine did, 40k fans should be happy.

    3. I wasn't saying that music should be it.. I was saying it at least fits with the content. I'm not even a fan of them myself.

I agree completely and will be taking the "wait and see" mindset either way. Just because the flopped with a trailer means little in the grand scheme, look how many movies have had amazing trailers with good music, etc.. and were duds!

    4. Classic: nope. it was too bloody easy on single player and the multiplayer was shit. otherwise it was a "great game"

  25. Kadebostany is a very popular European musical group and have made a big splash on the music scene these past few years.. tjose of you who don't like the soundtrack or think it was a poor choice either have no ear for good music or didn't even listen to the lyrics.. this type of soundtrack is exactly the fresh idea this type of game needs to attract a large enough audience to make this release a successful launch. You all probably dislike Eminem, HêD PE and Korn too.. sorry but listening to gothic chant music in a diaper in your grandmothers basement puts you in the minority and your opinions will never be recognized by a mainstream marketing team working to promote a successful product.. you should just /ragequit and go back to work on your anti-GW manifesto that will undoubtedly fall into oblivion

    1. dude i have an ear of music being a producer and a music Exec, with many years in promotions and marketing. the music in a vacuum is good, in a promotional video like this it's less than desirable. sure it "might" bring in new players etc, or it will flop. either way saying something like because you disagree with this music type you don't have any taste in music.

sorry nightfury but stick to rumors and news, music is NOT your major.

      Delete
    2. and if it is then you still have no business telling others they have no taste in music etc when tastes are personal preference and you will have a bias for those things you like over that which you dislike. music taste is subjective to your likes and dislikes.

but feel free to sling grade school insults it surely won't affect your image.

    3. Claiming you dislike something is one thing.. trying to play boss and say what does or doesn't belong in a businesses promotional advertising unless you have a serious stake in its success you should keep the extraneous dissertation on such out of the equation it could be done without.. indeed

    4. Aint gonna please everyone with sound track choice, as a trailer it kinda works would hate it if thats in game music, but its not like you havnt been able to play your music instead of ingame music on xbox since the 360 came out...

Personally i would love a boarding torpedo scene, where one of the marines (possibly called brother venturas) is playing long tall sally, like in predator...;-)

  26. The song works fine in the context of what it is. They wanted to give a high energy spaghetti western last stand vibe to the trailer. I happened to find it fit well with what was being shown. Do I expect, or want, it in the final game? Hell no. But these people throwing a fit thinking theyre removing the gothlc influences from the game just from one of several trailer's musical choices are dumb.

  28. I am always happy when people find different music to accompany something and still transmit the same message. I used to swear it was impossible get pumped up by rap before a fight. I've been proven wrong.

There are two types of music listeners out there, those that listen to pretty much everything, and those who listen to specific things. If you only listen to specific things, as a rule of thumb I respect your opinions less when it comes to music.

    -Broodlord
    -Regular Genestealers
-Genestealers with Scything Talons and green boil like growths on their backs (toxin sacs?)

It also showed off a variety of different weapons.
