This weekend, two new warbands enter the Mirrored City with a pair of new faction expansions – and today, we’re taking a first look at what this means for you with an in-depth preview of the Eyes of the Nine. Read on for a closer look at the fighters, cards and tactics this magic-mastering pack of manipulators bring to the game…
Vortemis the All-seeing is a Magister of Tzeentch and the leader of the Eyes of the Nine. In the game, he’s an incredibly versatile fighter, capable of dealing solid damage in close combat, blasting enemies at range (Inspiring himself in the process!) and summoning Blue Horrors. Careful, though – with 4 Wounds and Dodge 1, you’ll want to keep him safe from heavy-hitting fighters.
K’Charik is your heavy hitter – a bulky and fast-moving Tzaangor with a brutal close combat attack. With a Wounds characteristic of 3, he’s comparatively fragile – use him to score some early glory from kills before he perishes.
Rival Kairic Acolytes, Narvia and Turosh are best used to hold objectives and winnow opponents down at range with their sorcerous bolts – Narvia, in particular, is fantastic at finishing off durable fighters like Stormcast Eternals thanks to having Cleave.
The Eyes of the Nine feature a brand-new mechanic where Vortemis can summon Blue Horrors to the battlefield at any time. These guys are ideal for nabbing objectives and providing a key Support when you need one, as when you kill the Blue Horror, Brimstone Horrors take its place, making you very difficult to shift!
The Eyes of the Nine are, first and foremost, a control warband, focused around capturing objectives while maintaining decent ranged damage throughout the game. With a number of fast-moving fighters, and the ability to summon a Blue Horror on any starting hex (including those in your opponent’s territory), you’ll have an enormous amount of control over the board. This is complimented by an appropriately tricksy set of cards that let you shift fighters with ease and score plenty of glory in the process:
Where the Eyes of the Nine really stand out is in the power step – you’ll be able to use your activations to move and soften up enemies before annihilating them with all manner of devastating spells. Choices like Ravenous Flame and Wracking Change are great ways to deal damage, while upgrades like Piercing Bolt and Empowered Sorcery transform Vortemis into an even deadlier ranged fighter.
In short, where most warbands have to choose between playing for the objectives or bringing the fight to the foe, the Eyes of the Nine get to do both!
You’ll be able to grab the Eyes of the Nine this weekend when they go on pre-order
