I answer this question a lot from emails, and I figured it was time to address it online. The question is, what should I buy when getting into Dropzone Commander, especially if I am going to play the PHR or Shaltari? Well, believe it or not, when I was first getting into Dropzone Commander I had asked David the same question. Here is the answer.
The 2 player starter set of course needs to be on the list for those wanting to start the game or are hesitant, as its a great way to dive into the game. However it only includes the UCM (United Colonies of Mankind), and the Scourge.
If you dont get a 2 player starter set, you will still need to get a rulebook, and your factions command cards. So no matter what race you are, this was what I was told model wise would be the best way to go.
Starter Set+ Command Unit+ Fast Moving Flyer+ Unit of choice (like special forces or fun model). This easily gets you above 1000pts for any of the factions in Dropzone Commander. Not only that but its relatively affordable as you are looking at 3 model packs on top of the starter set.
The only thing to watch for, is that you make sure whatever the last model is, that you have the Dropship to get them onto the field if they require any.
That was the formula that David had given, and its solid. From there of course you would expand up to 1500pts, but you would be able to choose those models more carefully to fit what you want according to the playstyle and what you like about your faction.
