  1. hmmmm doesn't sound like it will be a must buy. That Ork force sounds awful.

    1. If this is accurate there are 12 fewer minis as compared to the DV box (13, if you got the limited edition DV box) I assume the "buddy" is its own mini, maybe a big squig?

One of the best things about the starter is the unique minis that come in the box. I'm not at all keen on "standard" minis.

    2. AobR is a better comparison.

      Delete
    3. I have a really high ammount of Space Wolves in Power and Terminator armor already, won't need this if the models are the same.

      Delete
  2. Not bad. Hope killa kans have options, but with it been a starter set probably not still quite good though.

    1. If the Space Wolves are the standard kits the Ork ones probably are as well.

      Delete
    2. Everything points towards normal models atm.
      This means complete sprues.

      Delete
    3. i've heard that they are just putting it the spurs from the box sets that you buy, so it should have all the options in it

      Delete
    4. complete sprues would be unuseal in a box set through. I'd take that rumnor with a lot of salt

      Delete
    5. As for just putting the sprues in, it is a win for them. No new design, no new tooling, so quicker turn around, and more importantly more time for other products like future campaign packs (my hope) or just keeping Codeci/Army books chugging out.

The better question in all of this is cost. The total for everything listed (minus the characters) is $175. If they can stomach putting all that in a box for $100, good for us. If they hit us with a $150 price tag, this may not be worth it.

      .

      Delete
    6. See other rumors with actual pictures of all the models they are just the standard kits with all options and it was listed at £80.

      Delete
  3. Yeah, now that the rulebook already comes in a relatively easy-to-handle format, people won't just buy it for the book.. and Space Wolves are too specific to convert easily into other Space Marines. At least with Dark Angels, the robes were fun to convert up.

And the Ork set is super basic.

I predict that a lot of the adverts will be around the exclusive character models.

    1. Yeah, I bought Dark Vengeance for the smaller rule book, and my homebrewed chapter uses feather iconography anyways, it just meant scraping the DA icons. Not something you can do with Space Wolves.

Also, between the physical book being smaller, and iBook and Epub versions available, there's no burning need for a Starter Set rulebook.

      Delete
    2. On the contrary - I will not pay £50 for 2 books I don't want and a hardback book. I have waited until now and will happily pay £75 for the mini rulebook. Presumably I will make back the £75 also as ebay is full of idiots. Like people buying the 'limited edition' Terminator captain for £55, which is not limited edition at all.

  5. There are pictures about, they look nice individually but the set looks very model-light compared to previous boxes games. Although I play neither Orks nor the Rout so I'm not that bothered either way!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Why didnt they learn the lesson from dark vengeance? AoBR was amazing because the marines were generic while also being decent value for money.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. agreed. if they make them space wolves they should make sure the iconography is bits that can be glued on, or not, seperatly

      Delete
  7. Hopefully the mini rulebook will be included in a updated DV set as well because this set sounds pricey.

    1. 100 Euros, so, £75 based on previous conversions

      Delete
    2. That's for the special edition others are saying.

      Delete
    3. that is a lot of money for what we're getting. especially as the mini rule book is less important now

      Delete
    4. Why is it less important? Is there an other mini rulebook somewhere?

      Delete
  8. I will be curious to see the pricing for the starter set. Multiples of this kit could build a solid core for both armies really quickly.

    1. Not really, you're not going to need more than 6 killa kans and 10 Nobs, and space wolves won't often need that many wolf guard.

      Delete
    2. For one: there's no such things as too many models anymore (thanks to Unbound, multiple detachments, Apocalypse, etc).

Two: You have absolutely no idea how many Wolf Guard will be "needed", because the new codex isn't out yet. You also don't get to tell people what they need.

Three: 10 Nobz isn't very many. Lots of people have three or four times that many.

      Delete
    3. Also, the Dread Mob formation requires 3 squads of 3 Kans.

      Delete
    4. Oh lolz
No One will buy more after playing them. Unbound or not they are not great in game.
And who the hell Plays unbound and who buys models just for a formations?
We should never buy 3 of x becaus GW says this fromation requiers it. I rather houserule it.
And TOs wont allow formations so its not even a question. All youre doing is following buyer-instructions. Make youre own formations. GW wants us to play like we want. Dont stick to their formation mandatory ammount.

      Delete
    5. I forgot that this entire hobby revolved around what TOs allow and what is hyper competitive. I already had 9 before the formation came out. I have had great success out of Rokkit and Grotzooka Kans.

You do realize that everything in this game doesn't revolve around hyper competitive choices right? People do play for fun and a Kan wall can still be a very fun and successful army unless you are playing against WAAC people constantly.

      Delete
    6. @Arron --Amen brother,

The WAAC players do tend to suck the fun out of it. :)

But so to do the players who make up their own formations and rules and whine or badger the shit out of you for not letting them play them. Just let it go, brother.

      Delete
    7. I don't think that 10 gretchin are the troops for a solid core army, at least in the 5th edition starter box there were 20 boyz!

      Delete
    8. Shocker -- another incoherent post by Seb that whines and puts everyone else down.
      1) People who would like to have some fun with friends and field weird armies play unbound
      2) There's a reason that GW makes formations to the specifications they do. You might as well say "why follow the BS on my profile. We just house-rule it."
      3) TOs have allowed formations, although you don't seem like the type that has ever been to a tournament. They usually just have limitations such as "formation or ally, not both."

  10. Depending on price... i think this is not too bad... if i remember correctly DV was £70 (or there abouts), if this set is about that price then it's worth it as the MiniRB is worth £25-30 and the rest of the models combined are a bargain at £35-40.
Ultimately, I only really want the Mini-RB and the Orks... but if i can get the wolves and shift them elsewhere then it's gonna be very attractive. If it's a lot more than that then I may consider alternatives.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Where are you selling the miniRB for £25?

    2. To rich people who haven't heard of ebay...

      Delete
    3. The book was virtually never any cheaper than that on eBay. Also, poor people shouldn't be playing hobbies like this anyway. In fact, they shouldn't have hobbies that cost anything, because they need to prioritize their finances.

      Delete
    4. Dude! Poor people are allowed to spend their hard earned spare cash on hobbis, treats and holidays in the same way as anyone else (they will just have less of it compared to a less poor person)! Don't be such an awful human being!

      Delete
    5. McDoogle- My favourite comment this year! If that makes me an awful human being too, I can live with that.

      Delete
    6. McDoogle you don't get to......tell people what they can or cannot spend their money regardless of their wealth status.

see what i did there? take your own advice McDoogle. you suggest/state others cannot do ______ yet you go right and do it yourself, the hypocrisy is outstanding.

      Delete
    7. Mcdoogle go crawl back under your bridge.

      Delete
    8. You know I have your back McDoogle, but you left out a word and that changed the context of your message.

"Whiney" poor people shouldn't play a hobby like this.

If all you have to do with your time is whine about the prices of models and books and otherwise rant about the corporations sticking it to the little guys, then you may actually be too poor both financially and mentally for this hobby.

Buy or don't buy, it really is your choice and freedom either way. Just don't seek justification here for you're lack of frugality by ranting about your financial situation or poor decisions to perfect strangers on the Internet. I care that you eat, but not that you cannot afford your plastic crack habit.

I come here looking for clues, often based on the experience and intuition of the long-beards. I like this hobby, and choose to spend my gaming allowance (from my family budget) on my models, books, and accessories. No regrets.

I'd rather not have to constantly sift through GW brow-beating, narcissism, and certainly not whining.

      Naftka, you're a saint.

      McDoogle, a prophet.

And even the son of God was crucified.

      How's that for a rant?

      Delete
  11. It's not like Dark Vengeance. It shouldn't be compared. At least Natfka knows to not listen to the rumor guy who said all new sculpts. There's more info and details on other sites like here:

      150$ CAN

fucking insulting for us canadian, if it's 125$ US it should be 135$ CAN

      stupid.

      Delete
    4. It costs GW more to send crap there, so no it shouldn't.

      Delete
    5. it doesn't cost 25 dollars more to ship to vancouver then it does seattle.

      Delete
    6. Except it doesnt really. Our dollar is about 94 cents on the us dollar. Like many multinational companies, GW allows unfair pricing to continue AND makes it difficult to order outside our region.

Something like this that is sold in a store has taxes at time of sale and import export get breaks at customs.

There is no reason except for GW price gouging to account for this, otherwise ordering from the states and paying shipping wouldnt be cheaper than full gw price.

      Delete
    7. GW is like lego. Same stuff and price where ever you are. It still hurts to step on

      Delete
    8. You think that is bad. The new rules box set costs around $145usd here in New Zealand ($165nzd). There is no way that can be accounted for in shipping costs. No suprise then that I am disinclined to purchase a copy.

      Delete
    9. My game store dealer says $125 and next week.

      Delete
    10. Shipping isn't the only price increase to consider. There are totally different tariffs/taxes in every different country so depending on how they are taxed, GW may have to charge more in CAN than the equivalent exchange rate because they get to pocket less of the revenue.

      Delete
    11. @Thors and Federick, it is not based on the exchange rate between the US and Canadian dollars, but on the rate between the pound sterling and the target monetary unit. Prices in the US have nothing to do with the prices in Canada. And shipping rates ARE higher in Canada.

  14. Half of me thinks just chucking in existing models (with the exceptions of the characters) is really half-arsed. The other half of me thinks it's cool since it means multi-part models and more uniformity across your whole army.

Price is a bit steep forr a starter kit though, 100 Euros is about £75-£80.

Also hoping I can pick up more plentiful DV tactical squads on ebay in the future. I love the models and want ALL THE TACTICAL SQUADS.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Disappointed. Looks like all existing models apart from the two HQs. Seems like a stop-gap / rush-job to get the new mini-book out.

On the other hand if you're starting the hobby up a very nice starting deal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is existing models, and with ALL options included. Unlike previous starter sets that had fixed models with no options, these will be full kits.

Much better bang for the buck.

      Delete
    2. especially as it means those space wolves can proably be converted to generic marines reasonably painlessly

      Delete
    3. Space Wolf models cannot be easily converted to generic SM models. Virtually every piece has some iconic SW thing either attached or engraved on the part.

    2. I am going to buy standard and limited edition, sell SW models and books.

~100 euros for warboss, 10x nobs, 20x grots, 2x herds and 6x killakans is a good price :)

    5. I think there will only be one version and its a limited edition for $125usd. What would get removed for the standard edition, the characters seem to be tied in to the theme and campaign to much to drop. They might be doing multiples of these kinda boxes every time a couple new armies come out, as their only paying for new tooling on the couple characters so its far cheaper than doing a whole box of new sprues.

    3. makes a lot of sense...expect a AM one real soon

      Delete
    4. That would make ludicrous amounts of sense and kind of fits with them using old sculpts instead of making new ones. Loads of potential in that idea.

      Delete
    5. I agree. I find it a little strange for them to through a pile of old models in a fancy new box and make it the new starter set when they went out of there way to make the last few starter sets snap fit. Other then new boxes for the sets it would be fairly simple for them to do multiple sets and would broaden their target market.

      Delete
    6. it'd also explain where that AM/eldar kit rumor came from

      Delete
  18. Seriously folks, it's not "half assed." It's a "campaign bundle" not a "starter set." Think Medusa V, not Assault on Black Reach.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's moe of a cross between a campaign bundle and a starter set, considering they're including the rulebook. Yes, it's themed around a campaign but (proving my earlier statements wrong) it's pretty much a starter kit in all but name.

      Delete
    2. Rule Book = Starter Set

      Campaign Book = Campaign Set

Either of which equal a good deal!

      Delete
  19. Bring the salt- let's look at the point totals for each army here. SW Characters ain't cheap, but let's say the IC costs 150, that's about 550 points of Wolves. Ork Characters ARE cheap, but let's say he's 150, that's about 450 points worth of Greenskins. 100 point swing is about the closest those two armies would be on the tabletop. I'm shaking my salt shaker all over this otherwise tasty piece of info.

    1. To be fair do you remember the starter set a few editions ago that had marines and dark eldar? You got one squad of dark eldar warriors compaired to a decent starter marine army.

    4. White dwarf leaks are up on dakka, models are comfirmed

      Delete
    5. Is there any balanced starter set? No and this one is no exception.

We know for sure that models are confirmed.

      Delete
    6. Dark Vengeance was horribly unbalanced in favour of the Dark Angels. Ditto with Island of Blood's High Elves.

      Delete
    7. AOBR wasn't "balanced" either. It had a nice selection of models though, even if they were more static than the standard sets.

      Delete
    8. I will take cool models over balance any day.

      Delete
    9. dark vengence wasn't exactly balanced eaither.
you had a captain, a librasrian, 1 tatical squad 1 bike squad and 1 terminator squad fighting, 20 cultists a chaos lord, a hellbrute and a handfull of chosen. I've not crunched the numbers but I'm pretty sure that the dark angels in that set had a biiig advantage

      Delete
  20. I think the problem is that everyone is trying to force GWs releases into their old model of "rule book, starter set, codexes, repeat"...when in reality, this is not a "starter set".

GW is very explicit that this is a "campaign set", and essentially includes a condensed version of the rulebook for kicks, but is not intended to be a traditional starter set like AoBR or IoB for fantasy. It's intended to be a quick access kit to dive into the Sanctus Reach campaign with some colorful named characters.

I would expect this to be GWs method from here on out - campaigns with various sets that will likely offer LE characters and the like, rather than single starter sets for each edition. Its easier and cheaper to sculpt and produce 2 special characters and then use existing sprues for campaign boxes, than it is to sculpt and produce an entire range of snap-fit models for starter set production.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well I was going to wait for the this box set to get the rule book, but now that this is box contains all the models I already own and don't need... I can't pay £90 for a small rulebook :P

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Ditto. I was ready to buy it until I saw it's existing models I have. I wont buy this.

  22. Assuming the kit contains the standard box set stuff...

    Kans: $46
    Grots: $16
    Nobz: $25
    Ork Character: $20?
    Ork total: $107

Blood Claws or Grey Hunters: $37
    Wolf Guard Terminators: $50
    Character: $20-ish
    SW total: $107

Plus book, dice, and templates? $125 isn't a bad value, but way too good by GW standards. I anticipate a higher price, or lower-quality models with fewer options. The optimist in my head is telling my inner pessimist to STFU though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I was thinking along the same lines. If these are actual sprues and not the snap fit models (even though those have become pretty darn good) this is a good value. Plus all the other stuff. Will order one myself. Been looking to expand my SWs and this will be a good way. Still wish I had my AoBR orks, I would have a good little force now, without any other purchases. Get some lootas and trucks, would be great.

      Delete
    2. I have the AOBR orks, the Ork battleforce box, and several Boyz boxes including a Fantasy box for variety, plus lootas, burnas, and extra Nobz. I am pretty upset about losing the "Warlords take Nobz as troops" and their painboy upgrade.

      Delete
    3. Confirmed $125 usd no dice or templates though far as description goes

  26. Id be happy to split the cost 50/50 with an ork player? I have almost an entire great company of wolves minus drop pods and a few more tanks, up to 95 individual models now so another 16 will bolster the ranks nicely :)
