Yep, its time to get that Psycannon out to blow apart some deamons!

With rules for fielding Chaos Daemons appearing in the Kill Team Annual, let’s create a new Grey Knight Specialist to hunt them down! First up, we give him a name using the table in the Kill Team Core Manual – Valdar Kai. Now, we need to chose what his specialism archetype is – he’s an expert at casting Daemons back into the warp with his psycannon.
The Kill Team Annual has three levels of abilities that you can give your new specialist – you select one from each that corresponds to their ability at that level. Then you choose another ability from level 1, 2 or 3 and this is the specialist’s level 4 ability. You then pick three Tactics for your specialist, one each from three different levels.
How would this work for Valdar? We want him to be as flexible as possible with his psycannon, so let’s go with the Relentless ability which means he can move and still shoot the heavy weapon at full effectiveness.
With a Strength 7 weapon, you’ll be wounding most Daemons on a 2+, but that just makes those rolls of 1 even more annoying! With the Assassin ability, we’ll never need to worry about that again.
At some point, those pesky creatures of the immaterium are going to want some revenge against Valdar for banishing their buddies. With Nerves of Steel, we can make his Overwatch fire more devastating for anything that dares to charge him.
Finally, let’s pick one more ability from the level 3 list. To really emphasise his long-range skills, we’ve gone with Rigorous to give him some re-rolls when he shoots.
Now we get to choose three Tactics for our Specialist. Since we want to make an expert at shooting, what could be better than giving him an extra shot? Okay, technically, giving him two extra shots would be better, but there isn’t a Tactic for that and frankly, a Heavy 5 psycannon is awesome enough.
With someone as deadly as Valdar on the battlefield, the enemy aren’t going to be hanging out in the open for long. If any try and hide from your righteous fury, the Headshot Tactic is ideal.
For our level 3 Tactic, we’ve gone with Move Unseen. Even the most advantageous battlefield position can become compromised and a good sniper knows when discretion is the better part of valour. Find a new spot and leave all those Daemons wondering where you went.
Of course, one of the real joys about creating your own Specialist is the conversion opportunities that it offers. With Valdar Kai, you could give him a set of legs from the Space Marine Devastator kit (painted silver, of course) – the reinforced greaves could represent his Relentless ability. The servo-skull from the same box would be great to symbolise Rigorous. Finally, give him one of the ammo crates that come with Ragnir Gunnstein so that everyone knows he has More Bullets!

This is just a taste of the specialisms that you can create with the Kill Team Annual – there are pages and pages of abilities and Tactics with which to make exactly the character you want. The only limit is your imagination.

The Kill Team Annual is available to pre-order from Saturday. Get ready for the daemonic incursion by building a Grey Knights kill team to ensure all of your skirmishes are sacrosanct.
