40k Box Sets Coming- DA vs CSM, SM vs Tau

These have been rumored before, and this gives a timeline to them. Nightfury has been talking about a new Dark Angels vs Chaos Space Marine box set for awhile, and seeing it not too far off in the future gives some hope for a revisit to each of the codices.

Please remember that these are rumors.

  1. I wonder if they'll make them like StormClaw and Blood Whatever, and just put regular sprues with 1 special character sprue.

  2. We already have a Dark Angels Vs. Chaos Marines box.

    It's called "Dark Vengeance."

    1. yeah this immediatly makes me doubt this rumor. why would they bother with a second DV?

      Delete
    2. On that same token why would the expand dark vengeance?

      Delete
    3. First of all. The DV box is there to stay as long as the rules stand.and the other box will only be temporary. So that could work. And it all will depend on what the box wil actualy contain. It's not like it will have an how to play booklet in there. Beginner vs advanced.

    4. On that same token why would the expand dark vengeance?

    5. they already HAVE expanded dark vengeance with additional DV-themed kits for both the dark angels and crimson slaughter

    6. Why wouldn't they expand DV? Think about it:

The idea of these boxed sets is to get people A) started in the game, B) expand their armies by buying two, C) Buy one army they like and get a friend to start a new army with the second.

Well they already have the DV kit which is a great value. The fact that players could then buy ANOTHER two army kit on top of that might incentivize even more people to buy the armies since they can get a lot of bulk at a good discount. Plus, those that have already bought the DV kit will likely pick up one of the new ones.

All they have to do is make the two kits have different models inside and they're good to go. Not too hard for the CSM side considering it doesn't even have generic CSMs in it.

      Delete
    7. Plus it's not really "expanding" DV so much as just taking other CSM/DA kits and throwing them in a discounted box. It probably won't be the new DV sprues, just older normal sprues like all the other campaign boxes they've had.

    8. Was anyone else hoping that one of these was going to be Space Wolves vs Thousand Sons, as one of the early rumors said, or was that just me? I like DV, but kinda wanted to delve into some nice Tzeentch plastic

      Delete
    9. Problem is that there really isn't any "Thousand Sons" themed models at the moment. These boxes have been plastic only, with only two new models (the HQs).
Thousand sons would need plastic Rubrics as well.
And these sets have not had any of the newest models of the armies in them, mostly older models, so even if we did get plastic Rubrics we woudln't get them at a discount in such a kit.

Besides "Thousand Sons" isn't an army, and don't have anything else to add.

    10. If only GW had the same selection as FW and some of the imitators out there. There are great TS dreadnoughts (Helbrutes) and terminators that would make for a good box.

  3. With Gav Thorpe's The Unforgiven coming out June 1, I imagine this campaign will probably tie up nicely with that. There seems to be some big stuff going down in that book.

    1. Gav Thorpe's novels are a crime against the written word

      Delete
    2. What? Those books are great. To each their own I guess.

    4. With Johnny on this one. To be fair, outside of Abnett and recently McNeil, the older BL authors are quite horrific. Thorpe and Kyme being the pinnacle of dull narrative, poor pacing and 2 dimensional characters. Frankly, if it weren't for their connections to the company, they'd struggle to even get self published :P

      Delete
    5. Whaaaat? Nick Kyme's Salamanders novels were excellent! Yeah, there were some pacing issues, but characters like Tsu'gan were fantastically written.

      Delete
    6. Dear god. Nick Kyme's novels are literally the worst thing I've ever read. It's like it was written by a five year old with a hard on. The dialogue is hilarious

      Delete
    7. I don't know i really like the salamander novels

      Delete
    8. Thorpe's stilted and barely literate prose makes me want to burn my own eyeballs for insulting my brain. And that is taking into account how much he has improved over the last 15 years...

  4. You think GW will be awesome and use this as a chance to bring out plastic Cult troops?

    Oh wait its GW

    1. i doubt we'll ever see "new" kits in these campaign boxes

      Delete
    2. There will maybe be plastic plague marines at somd point in the distant future. Other then that, there will never be another plastic csm infantry kit. What you have is all there will ever be. plastic csms and zerks will stay as they are, and chosen, sonics, and rubrics will be dropped from the game instead of updated.

      Delete
    3. I doubt that Roderick. That way they can as well drop the whole chaos dex and say use any imperial mix to build your own.

      Delete
    4. Lol, no they will definitely put out new plastics, CSM players who have DV models will want them all to match, and GW wants to sell themto them. Eventually.

      Delete
    5. There is a LOT of money in updating CSM, I think we just need to wait.
Remember Sisters are rumored to have been done for quite some time now... so if the CSM are being designed as we speak there will be a loooong time till we see them on the field.

  5. Look, I love me some Dark Angels, but sweet jeezus. This would be the THIRD Angels box, if you count the DV expansion box. Unless there are brand new models in there, I don't want another one.

    1. Well, since Ezekiel and Azrael are still metal minis, and considering the every other space marine faction with a codex has a troop box, they could easily chuck a couple of new models in. If it's as good a deal as the Space Wolves and Blood Angels boxes, I'm in.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. There are so many Space Marine players that are just using the same models out of Dark Vengeance. I've seen some that don't even bother trimming the iconography, they just call them Blood Angels or Space Wolves and paint them that way.

The market is saturated with Dark Angels.

      Delete
    3. They probably have to make da so prominent to keep there ip protected seeing as there is a tv show and a band also called dark angel make them the box set Marines and gw can argue da is business critical in court...

That and one chapter easily embodies all the major SM ip in so much they have robed and standard Marines etc.

    4. Surely I'm not the only one who's noticed the DV Company Master and Librarian actually have the gear and such to make very reasonable stand-ins for Azrael and Ezekial.

What would be really handy would be an Azrael in Terminator armor - or at least let him Deep Strike.

      Delete
    5. The expansion box was because DA didn't have one of the current big army boxes

      Delete
  6. Weird that they would redo DA vs. CSM. Still, those books need a revision so it'll be good to see and Nightfury has been pretty spot on.

    1. i wonder if we would actually get a new csm codex, especially after getting khorne daemonkin with no noteable changes to the csm units in it

      Delete
    2. I suspect we'll not get a new dex for em. my guess is this'll be a campaign book that'll feature new formations and possiably units to bring these dexes up to par.

      Delete
    3. supplements would be nice too, at least on the DA side, chaos already have a few, and if these chaos marines are crimson slaughter then they already have their own supplement as well

      Delete
    4. true but that supplement is short on formations so I could see GW using it as a chance to slide in a formation or two. this is assuming GW really bothers with a new box set for two armies already with boxed sets. which seems odd

      Delete
    5. Didn't both previous campaign boxes come before codex updates?
Might be in for a treat.

      Delete
  7. If this is true and follows the same pattern as Storm claw and Shield of Baal. There is likely for a DA, Chaos, Tau and SM 7ed codexes coming along. And the box have spruce models from existing range, plus two unique HQ characters. Hopefully there will also be some kind of new releases for Chaos marines - they need some updating. For instance plastic Noise marines, Thousand sons and Plague marines... It would bee nice if DA would face some other Csm like Thousand sons.

    1. wouldnt necessarily mean a new codex, as Deathstorm featured tyranids who did not recieve a new dex at the time.

      Delete
    2. That is true but since al of them are 6ed and need some updating I think that this could bee something of a pattern... but maybe they leave out CSM because they did get Khorne Demonkin codex or maybe there will be some other demonkin codex coming along...

      Delete
    3. they could get updated without a new 'dex though. yet again see 'nids

      Delete
    4. I'd be happy for just updated basic CSM troops. I know the FW stuff is designed to work with them but they really look so old. Those, cultists and maybe cult conversion kits would revitalise their sales more so than an uber powerful codex.

  8. Meanwhile, GW apparently continue to sit on plastic SoB while Raging Heroes have raised almost $450,000 of their Kickstarter to make them in two days. Bah.
And hey, link if you want in: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/loudnraging/tgg2-light-and-darkness

    1. I doubted whether Raging Heroes would dent GW bottom line much at all, but half-a-mil and counting seems like it's pretty substantial.

      Delete
    2. Yep. Good for RH, though I personally don't like the aesthetic for their models.

In the grimdark of the 41st millenium, pinup porn-poses that show off bare chests and wide hips don't really strike me as fitting.

      Delete
    3. Have they even finished shipping the miniatures from the last kickstarter? Which finished like two years ago?

      Delete
    4. No they haven't Johnny. No they haven't.

      Delete
    5. Are you still waiting on models too from RH?

      Delete
    6. Well no worries there that means if GW releases plastic SOB in 23 months it'll still beat RH average time frame.

      Delete
    7. +1 DrBored, that is some 4chan level stuff there.

      Delete
    8. i guess DrBored has issues with wyches as well right. it's not as if S&M has a place in 40k's fluff, with a chaos god dedicated to that sort of thing. not at all. i mean DE wyches or Witch Elves have no place in fantasy right.....surely they don't.

      Delete
    9. I don't think the RH models fit the sisters of battle all that much.
Besides some of us are puritans and don't like mixing in models from other systems.
(I can take fantasy stuff if it fits, but that is as far as I go :) )

      Delete
    10. I don't mind slaaneshi themed stuff, my issue is why are they posing? that's not gonna help them in a firefight... =P I'd much prefer if they were at least in fighting poses

  9. If the mini rulebook that comes with the SM/Tau set features Tau on the cover, I'll buy it. :)

    1. yep yep yep!

Sign me up. Hope this one is real. Of course, you never know what you're going to actually get with rumors... But I guess that's the fun.

      Delete
  10. Keep stretching for those rumors, something will stick. Best part is that until Lords of War mentioned Space Marine or Tau nobody was even thinking them. A bunch of carnie rejects.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not sure what you mean... don't rumors have to start somewhere?

      Delete
    2. Yeah, but lords of war didn't say they were coming soon, they said we'd see 30k plastics after an SM codex, meaning a long time from now, then to underscore the snark they said "hell, you will see a Tau codex" before plastic 30k, meaning all are far away

      Delete
    3. yeah, I don't get why people interpreted that to mean "SMS INCOMING!" it sound to me more like wishful thinking at best. Honestly in terms of campaign sets I'd like to see one featuring grey knights vs this new khorne'dex. I bet with the right unit load out that could be a fun fight to have

      Delete
    4. That would be a good fight. Especially with fully painted models.

      Delete
    5. Didn't he say releases for space marines and tau, not codex specifically

      Delete
    6. Yeah this "rumour" has been blown out of proportion I think, when I read it I assumed he meant to emphasize that we won't get plastic 30k for ages, and when mentioning they will get releases I imagined maybe some plastic HQs or updated old models etc (similar to what tyranids got last at the end of last year) at most a campaign + supplement but that's entirely guesswork, could be nothing more that tac-objective cards :P
