I posted this list some 5-6 months ago, and it recently came to the forefront of my thinking. I discovered about 60 more infantry I hadn't remembered having while organizing my models. Unopened boxes of guard infantry. So I started putting some more together with the intention of fielding this list. I think I am still a little short, but hey, win a single tournament or spend less than $100 whichever comes first. I think I'm about 60 guys short now.

This list is based off of the books by Dan Abnett. Massed infantry pushing forward in a massive wave. If you've read the books you know how cool of an image it put into your head. War on a massive scale only found in the 41st millennium. Anyhow, here is the list for those of you that are new to reading here, meanwhile I am putting more infantry together.

RIP Duty. Massed Infantry Assault. Retraining, Indoctrination, and Punishment detail
2500 Pts

Total model count 353.

1 Lord Commissar @ 80 pts (Unit Type: Infantry; Flak Armour; Frag Grenades; Refractor Field; Bolt Pistol; Power Weapon; Aura of Discipline; Independent Character; Summary Execution; Stubborn)

4 Infantry Platoons @ 605pts
4 Platoon Command Squad (Unit Type: Infantry; Flak Armour; Frag Grenades; Close Combat Weapon x4; Lasgun x4)
1 Platoon Commander (Flak Armour; Frag Grenades; Laspistol; Close Combat Weapon; Junior Officer)

3x9 Infantry Squad (Frag Grenades; Close Combat Weapon x9; Flak Armour; Lasgun x8; Krak Grenades; Meltagun x1; Commissar; Combined Squad)
1 Commissar (Flak Armour; Frag Grenades; Bolt Pistol; Krak Grenades; Power Weapon; Summary Execution; Stubborn)
1 Sergeant (Flak Armour; Frag Grenades; Laspistol; Krak Grenades; Power Weapon)

50 Conscripts Squad (Close Combat Weapon x50; Flak Armour; Lasgun x50)

Basically, we have so many troops, objectives should not be a problem. All the infantry squads have commissars and should be put together so that they are 4x33 men with 6 power weapons, 3 commissars, 33 krak grenades and 3 melta guns. The Commissar Lord should be placed to support and help the 200 conscripts with leadership. Platoon commands are there simply to give orders.

  1. Your big problem, I think is that you have no real shooting- meltaguns, sure, and Lasguns galore, but three full Infantry Squads with FRFSRF at 12" only actually kills about five Marines, which isn't really enough considering they are going to charge you next turn, and you can delay them for a long, long time with Stubborn and Power Weapons, they are eventually going to win because you didn't do any real damage to them on the way in. Additionally, you can only shoot four targets per turn because you have four blobs- and they all have to be within 12" if you want to kill vehicles.

My suggestion would be to kit the infantry squads with heavy weapons and sniper rifles instead; put, say, a Lascannon in each squad, or an autocannon if you're not worried about big vehicles. Add in Autocannons or something in the Platoon Commands and maybe some Heavy Weapon Squads if you're feeling saucy. Line the Conscripts up in front of you, attach the Lord Commissars to a blob behind the front line (so the Conscripts benefit from his aura) and fire away, confident that they are not going to kill off your expendable mans anytime soon.

Basically, your plan (huge piles of mans) is good, but you need a way for it to affect the opponent or they are just going to run forward and tear into you. Orks, or Tyranids, or anything mechanized would tear this army apart.

  2. I agree to a point. No mech short of a land raider is really an issue, there are just that many krak grenades (like 120+). Tyranid monsterous creatures could very well be the end all of the list though. Dont forget the Conscripts too. So thats 8 units that can be shoting.

The whole concept really is just to just swarm the enemy, and if you lose 100 or 200 guys, so what. The concept is more of the visual based on the book, when the imperium is assaulting a chaos world. The army itself I think will do ok, but I havent yet fielded it.

I guess the issue really comes down to... How much can my opponent kill. I figure once it's built, I will find out.

  3. Conscripts are BS2, and thus don't really contribute to shooting much, and Krak Grenades are not anti-tank.

Swarming an enemy is all well and good, but getting killed in close combat because all you could do was go "pew pew pew" with Lasguns is not. The list's ability to shoot outside of 12" is virtually zero, and against a mechanized army, it IS zero. Eldar will run circles around you, pick off a couple squads and force morale checks. and then zoom in and hold an objective (and contest all yours) in the final turns of the game, and there's nothing you can do about it.

A 2000pt shooting army can kill off 30+ models in cover every turn; an assault army should be wiping out at LEAST three times that. (In both cases, this is before taking casualties.) They may not be killing your entire army, but they can certainly kill the parts that matter (i.e. anyone on an objective.)

Don't get me wrong, I like the army, but I think this is the wrong way to do a "tide of dudes" army.

  4. I can't really argue that. I am generally able to kill 200 orks in 5 rounds with my IG. I will attempt the list again. Heavy weapons need to be out though, as does special weaponry. The book goes into great detail about how wave of flesh was pushed at the great fortress walls. An army geared like this may not be able to win games in that sense, but I will give it a run and see if there is anyway to toughen it up.

To run a RIP Duty list though, it's bodies need to be the weapon with commissars pushing the tides. I will work on it later today.

    Suggestions without adding firepower?

  5. You can consider putting a Ministorum Priest or two in each conscript squad to at give those 50 WS2 models re-roll to hit, and also an eviscerator.
This would help with the assault side, and give you 4/6 more attacks at S6 with Armorbane. (60 points each)

Perhaps throwing in an Aegis defense line half way down the board may be nice also as the cover for you advancing may prove helpful. (50 points)

And lastly, the maybe somewhat crazy idea, Mr.Creed?
after all, his orders may be very useful, especially charging with 50 fearless, ferious charge, reroll to hit conscripts.
