Getting involved in campaigns is one of the most rewarding aspects of tabletop gaming, and Warhammer 40,000 campaigns are no different. Luckily for you, the Vigilus Defiant campaign book is packed with handy bolt-on rules that really immerse you in the narrative of the war zone, and offers guidance and resources to make running your own campaign a cinch. Let’s see how it all works:
The first stage of the fighting on Vigilus became known as the War of Beasts, named for the Ork invasion that ravaged the world and the rise of the Genestealer Cult that followed shortly after.
The Vigilus Campaigns section kicks off with a dedicated War of Beasts campaign. This purpose-built system breaks down the key events of the war (as detailed in the sweeping narrative earlier in the book) into manageable, bite-sized chunks – specifically, three phases, each comprising 6 rounds. Each round has its own narrative highlights, special rules and recommended missions to use, based on the current stage of the war. If you’re after a ready-made Vigilus campaign that you can start from the get-go (a great option for gaming clubs), this is it!
There are also 12 narrative missions – six Echoes of War missions designed to refight specific battles, and six Crucible of War missions that represent the most common types of battle fought on during the War of Beasts:
During each round, the War of Beasts campaign offers bonus glory points for participating in a choice of three appropriate missions drawn from those featured in Vigilus Defiant and the Warhammer 40,000 Core Rules. In this way, players are rewarded not just for victory in battle, but for engaging in the narrative itself!
Rather than lay out a specific campaign for you, this section offers a toolbox of handy guidelines to help you create one of your own, but set within the wider Vigilus war zone. One of the coolest options you can apply to your campaign games is the Nihilus Events Table, which can lead to results such as a Warp Surge that empowers psykers, but puts them at greater risk should they lose control, or Orbital Debris – the fallout of a cataclysmic space battle. If you want your games to feel like they’re taking place on the war-torn sentinel world, these rules will really help to immerse you in the setting.
The Battlezones section offers another layer of optional rules that represent the hazardous environs of Vigilus. From natural disasters such as wasteland dust storms and geothermal eruptions to man-made (or should that be alien-made?) conditions such as Genestealer Infestations, you can theme your battles in any of six different battlezones, each bringing its own set of challenges.
Finally, Vigilus Defiant includes specific sets of war zone rules, each representing an embattled region on the planet’s surface that the warring factions are fighting over, such as the Megaborealis hivesprawl. Not only does each of the five war zones have a selection of optional rules to apply to games being fought in that location, but they also include suggestions for missions, battlezones and narrative ideas to help bring your games to life.
Of course, Vigilus Defiant is ultimately your campaign book, so you should feel free to use the myriad different campaign options detailed within as you see fit. You can keep it simple with just the geographical war zone location rules or the environmental hazards of the battlezones, or go crazy by adding all of the optional rules layers into the mix – it’s up to you. In any case, you won’t have long to wait before you can get started, as Imperium Nihilus: Vigilus Defiant is up for pre-order tomorrow!
