Open play is Warhammer 40,000 at its most creative. It’s seeing how many Guardsmen it takes to slay a Renegade Knight… with their bayonets. It’s writing your own datasheets. It’s that zombie survival mission you made for a mate where you threw endless hordes of Poxwalkers at their Deathwatch (not literally, we hope). In the latest Chapter Approved preview, we’re checking out just what tools you have for open play in the new edition (and, of course, Looted Wagons)…
With Chapter Approved 2018, you’ll be able to convert pretty much any kind of Looted Wagon you fancy. We’ve provided three incredibly flexible datasheets, each designed to cover a distinct archetype to build around and packed with options. The Kart is an Orkish transport about the size of a Chimera, the Wagon is a battle tank based on tanks like the Leman Russ, and the Battle Fortress is the equivalent of a Baneblade. Basically, if you’ve ever looked at a tank from another army and thought “I bet I could Ork-ify” that, you can.
These profiles aren’t just great for open play – you could easily use them in a narrative campaign, looting your enemies’ most beloved vehicles and turning them against them. Don’t worry if you’ve never converted your models before! We’ve included a short guide with some key tips to get you started. You’ll be unleashing your inner Big Mek in no time…
In Chapter Approved 2018, we’re offering you a new set of tools designed to make creating custom characters super simple, with a huge set of trait tables and guidelines. Maybe you want your Primaris Captain to be a dead-eyed sniper with a custom bolt rifle, or perhaps your Hive Tyrant is even more terrifying than its kin, inspiring fear in all who face it. You’re also free to let fate take the wheel and roll up completely random combinations.
One of the coolest uses of this system is giving your favourite Black Library character rules. A Chaos Lord with the Heirloom Weapon trait, Terrifying ability and Ferocious Combatant characteristic modifier makes a great Talos from Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Night Lords series, while a Lord Commissar with Reactive Tactics, Stealth Assault and Courageous makes for a great Ibram Gaunt.
At the very least, it’s a great excuse to convert your models – the studio team, for instance, used the system to make a custom Silver Skulls character, then built and painted him:
None of these abilities are game-breakingly strong, so if you’re playing friendly games based on rough points costs, feel free to use them and balance it out by letting your opponent take a custom character too. For narrative play, meanwhile, you could roll new abilities after every battle and organically grow your favourite characters into storied champions.
If you’re looking to let loose with your creative side, this year’s Chapter Approved has got you covered – and we haven’t even looked at narrative play yet! Check back tomorrow for more previews, or take a look at yesterday’s matched play preview.
