This weekend, Wrath and Rapture goes on pre-order, letting you pit the Daemons of Slaanesh against the Daemons of Khorne in reality-shaking conflicts across the Mortal Realms and throughout the 41st Millennium.
Long-time fans of Warhammer Age of Sigmar will know that Slaanesh is technically missing from the Mortal Realms – and while we know where he’s hidden, only a few beings in the realms know of his whereabouts. In this article, we’re exploring just where Slaanesh has gotten to – as well as checking in with the escalating hunt for this stolen god…
Slaanesh, as you probably know, is the god of excess, indulgence, obsession and a whole host of horrible, hedonistic stuff. Also known as the Dark Prince, Slaanesh is the youngest of the Chaos Gods, and possesses a particular hunger for the souls of aelves thanks to their intense and powerful emotions.
When the world-that-was was destroyed, the soul-feast that followed left Slaanesh glutted and vulnerable. Through the heroic efforts of Tyrion, Teclis, Malerion and Morathi – aelf heroes transformed into god-like beings – Slaanesh was trapped. Since then, each of the aelven powers has attempted to extract the devoured souls of their kin, with mixed results. The Daughters of Khaine, for instance, bear strange mutations like wings and serpentine bodies, while Teclis’ Idoneth Deepkin are withdrawn and taciturn soul-thieves who must raid endlessly to replace their naturally withered spirits.
To contain the essence of a Chaos God, the aelven pantheon needed to construct a prison unlike anything in the Mortal Realms…
Slaanesh is currently contained in a sub-realm known as the Hidden Gloaming:
So what exactly is the Hidden Gloaming? Well, here’s where things get interesting. Reality in the Age of Sigmar exists in the form of a number of massive realms – the magical Mortal Realms, the Realm of Chaos – and the aetheric void, a grand space of nothingness known as the Great Nothing or the Darkness Without. The space between the realms does not, however, lie empty – there’s all manner of weird stuff in there, like the Allpoints (a massive nexus of Realmgates), the Silver Towers and an assortment of mysterious celestial entities.
Within this aetheric void, the Realms of Light and Shadow, Hysh and Ulgu, seem to be linked, orbiting each other and creating a cycle of light and darkness across the realms. Between them lies a mysterious space where light and shadow meet, and how to access it is unknown by few spare the gods of Hysh and Ulgu themselves. This is the Hidden Gloaming – as good a place as any to imprison a terrifying Chaos God who wants to consume your entire species.
So that’s where Slaanesh is – but how are his servants taking his absence? The responses are varied…
Some, like the Invaders, simply carry on as usual – after all, the power of excess still runs throughout the Mortal Realms, and the truest way to worship Slaanesh is to serve one’s most excessive desires. Some, like the Pretenders, have taken up the mantle of Slaanesh for themselves, believing themselves to be worthy replacements for their Dark Prince. Finally, the Seekers endlessly hunt for Slaanesh, using vast speed and highly attuned sensory organs to scour the Mortal Realms.
The hunt for Slaanesh is, on many levels, absurd. On some level, the Seekers will never find their god – they are, after all, hunting in tangible places for an intangible being. However, with something awry with Slaanesh himself, the Seekers are converging on Ulgu – and getting closer to their God than any would know…
Even with their God’s absence, the followers of Slaanesh still wage wars in his name across the Realm of Chaos. Some suspect one of the other Chaos Gods has had a hand in Slaanesh’s disappearance, some want to solidify their own positions of power, while others want to prove their devotion and amass impressive trophies and accomplishments to show for when their god eventually returns. All of these obsessions bring them into constant conflict with the other denizens of the Realm of Chaos.
In Wrath and Rapture, you’ll be able to fight these battles for yourself, reaving across the Mortal Realms with new units, rules and even tables for providing your daemons with appropriately evil names. Pre-order your copy this weekend, and check back tomorrow for another in-depth preview of the set…
