Today the Office of Naval Research and their industry partner Northrop Grumman successfully disabled a small target vessel using a solid-state, high-energy laser (HEL), mounted onto the deck of the Navy's self-defense test ship, the former USS Paul Foster (DD 964).

Previously lasers have been tested in the air and on land. Its application at sea could be to quickly disable pirate boats off the coast of Africa, or to keep terrorist boats away from navy vessels.

I however think its just as viable to fire every weapon you got and blow them to high hell. Disabling is cool, but nothing beats the overwhelming use of firepower.

The video has no real sound, but its worth taking a look at.
