The Lord Discordant on Helstalker is a new option hitting the table for Chaos soon. His base profile is what you might expect from a Chaos Lord – Weapon Skill 2+ with 4 Attacks, but he also benefits from being mounted on the beastly Helstalker. At full Wounds, the Helstalker can make an additional six close-combat attacks after the Lord Discordant has swung with his own weapon and mechatendrils.
The Lord Discordant is armed with a vicious impaler chainglaive. Normally the weapon is +2 Strength, but on a turn the model charges or makes a Heroic Intervention, the Strength profile is increased to x2, putting his attacks at a mighty Strength 8. Each time he fights, he can make two additional attacks with his mechatendrils.
They might only be Strength 4, but these are the types of attacks that add up over time, so don’t forget them! You can also take a stab with the powerful techno-virus injector, which carries the added benefit of dealing an additional D3 Mortal Wounds if you successfully wound a Vehicle.
All told, this model can make an impressive 12 attacks in the Fight phase with varying profiles, not counting Death to the False Emperor. This volume of attacks is enough to threaten any Infantry unit in the game.
What with him being so dangerous, keeping the Lord Discordant safe is a priority – luckily, the model has a 2+ Save, a 5+ invulnerable save and the ability to heal 1 wound a turn. Even with this, he will need a little support from the rest of your force. Consider teaming him up with a Dark Apostle and use the Benediction of Darkness prayer – this will make the Lord Discordant harder to hit. By hunting Vehicles, you’ll be able to further extend this model’s longevity as he heals himself with the Spirit Thief ability.
While the Lord Discordant will slice and dice foes in melee, he’s also a great support Character. Through his Aura of Discord, he gives all Daemon Engine units +1 on rolls to hit – a huge buff to Maulerfiends, Forgefiends and even the Khorne Lord of Skulls.
If you feel brave enough to make the Lord Discordant your Warlord, he can benefit from most of the Warlord Traits in the codex. I am especially fond of Hatred Incarnate, which allows you re-roll wound rolls of 1. Flames of Spite is also great, causing an additional Mortal Wound for each roll of a 6+ to wound with a melee weapon. These work for the impaler chainglaive down to the humble mechatendril.
There are a couple of really solid choices for Marks of Chaos and Relics. If you give him the Mark of Khorne you can give him the Talisman of Burning Blood Relic. This allows you to Advance and charge in the same turn and allows you to re-roll that charge move if you fail. If Slaanesh is more your thing, the Intoxicating Elixir grants him +1 Strength and Attack. The extra Strength will really benefit him while trying to wound things like Imperial Knights on the turn he charges!
For a single Command Point you can choose to make a Chaos Space Marines Detachment a Soulforged Pack from Vigilus Ablaze. This opens up the Master of Soulforges Warlord Trait giving plus 2″ Move to all Soulforged Pack Daemon Engine units within 6″ inches of your Warlord, increasing the Lord Discordant’s Move to 14″! This Specialist Detachment also opens the Mecha-serpents Relic, replacing a Character’s mechatendrils and granting one additional attack for each enemy model within 1″ in the Fight Phase at +1 Strength, AP -1 and Damage 2. This is a significant improvement to the mechatendrils and will let your Lord Discordant make a mess of enemy hordes.
To sum up, the Lord Discordant is a melee monster. I’d recommend sticking with his standard ranged weapons while focussing all your efforts on getting him into combat and enabling him to do as much damage as possible. You need a distraction to keep your opponent from shooting him early in the game and look for (or create) opportunities to use his Spirit Thief ability. And remember your ABCs – Always Be Charging!
