Tabletop Wargaming Turns 100yrs Old!
That's right, A Funny Little Wars Game was created and played 100 years ago, and was created by Herbert George Wells back in 1913. He is known as the author of The Time Machine and War of the Worlds, and can be seen in the picture above, along the bottom left of the picture, measuring his movement with a string.
The game was based around the American Civil War, and had rules that any of today can admire, like capturing a cannon by being within 6 inches of it with 4 or more men being alongside its wheels.
His game of 1913, used spring loaded cannons, and hollowed lead figures. Firing small projectiles determined who and how many models were to be removed, and the rules were rather complex. Later dice came in, to help prevent damage to the miniatures.
There is more on the game, over on the BBC by following this link.

A huge thanks to Mark for bringing this game to my attention. What a great celebration of the hobby and its origins.
