Where you able to get the Idomitus Boxset? Selling out in Minutes Everywhere

Oh the horror. Selling out in minutes, webstore crashing and not refreshing, stores being cut back on the number of boxes they were previously allotted, and more heartaches and problems with the release.

Did you get yours? What are your stories? Fill us in on the comments section.

Really hoping this to get better and that everyone here was able to get the boxset you wanted.

Some of the craziness Ive heard (not confirmed since Im not a retailer), is that the boxsets alloted to stores was cut back drastically to push more sales through their webstores. The problem was that the stores were allotted more boxes and the day (or two) before pre-orders had that number reduced by their distributors.

This along with incentives (additional goodies like in the pic above) were given for GW webstore orders leaving us to look there for our copies instead of all the independent stores.

Messy release so far. Let us know in the comments your good or bad stories.

For those of you in the US/Ca we are only a little over an hour out. Prepare for War! Good luck

  1. We've made tonnes of boxes they said.
    Enough for everyone they said.
Limited store purchases to 3 copies.

I woke up and they were all gone. Couldn't find it anywhere. What a joke.

    1. Seriously. I woke up and they were gone. No chance to even think abour pre ordering.
Wtf is the point of a pre order if you cant pre order?

    2. Yeah, I was under the impression that there would be enough that they wouldn't sell them all during the pre-order period (though I'm sure they will have some set aside for stores on release day).

Was going to order one after my next pay... so much for that.
Unless they decide to make some more, I'll just have to wait until the regular starter set.

    3. They didn't limit stores to 3. They limited consumers to 3 per online order. Stores got as many as 20+ from their distributioners.

      Delete
    4. They were limited to 45. And this number was given to stores a few days AFTER they had put orders in, hamstringing any stores that promised copies to hundreds of customers.

      Delete
    5. Ya ya same here. I'm not overly concerned about it, IF, the standard box is basically the same thing maybe minus the fancy book ... just with a regular book.

Does anyone know what the standard 9th ed core box is going to be??

IF it is half the box this was, THEN I'll be pissed.

  2. I got the 2 I needed (needed another one for my friend) from 2 different spots. My GW was sold out in 7 minutes (Netherlands) and he actually send me the numbers of some independent retailers who both still had one. The computer in the store kept crashing every 10 seconds and places like Wayland got completely locked down for over 30 minutes due to the amount of people refreshing...

    1. Also Scalpers have bought a truly enormous amount and are selling them for nearly double the price on local online marketplaces. I heard from the GW manager that they are currently in talks with retailers about a second wave. Apparently head office was convinved this amount (twice that of the Shadowspear boxset) would be enough for 6 weeks. The main problem they ran in was that if they create a second wave the scalpers will probably start returning boxes they couldn't sell.

      Delete
    2. I hope the second wave comes soon enough (some resellers are saying end of August) to market the scalpers out. I truly hope they start a bid war and undercut each other until the prices go down significantly, although I don't think that will happen in any significant way. :(

      Delete
    3. Then GW should make it exchanges only instead of returns for items like this.
Also, they should sell the first wave, then the second wave just a week after, only announcing the second wave once the first wave is all out. That plus a no return policy for extrenley high demand products like this boxed set = fuck you scalpers.

Unless I can find the box without the stormcast eternal in it and perhaps without the crappy bikes for a decent price then Id be down to buy it

      Delete
    4. The Judiciar is on the sprue with the Chaplain, bladeguard (the veterans and the ancient) and eradicators... I don't see them altering that sprue for the regular starter set.

They could drop the bikes, Captain, and Lieutenant though.

    5. Scalping didn't happen like it has in the past. Card numbers and addresses were limited to 3. Stores got as many as their distros could get a hold of.

      Delete
    6. You don't think scalpers have multiple avenues of obtaining limited run items? Multiple cards, IP addresses, addresses of friends to ship to? This has been going on for a loooong time, scalpers are smart enough to get around "limit 3 per customer".

      Delete
    7. Scalping hasn't changed Angel of Brass. you may have inside info at the GW side in the boardroom alongside your marketing buddies, but in the real world even GW stores got 3 copies- the one man stores don't get 20+ boxes of anything. -signed someone who buys direct from a one man store.

    8. I'm ok waiting another few weeks to a month or so to get a copy. I have armies galore ... I was looking to snag 3-4 of these because they seem like a solid way to the foundation for 2000-3000 point armies without breaking the bank entirely. I've been interested in starting both Necrons and a 100% Primaris army for awhile now.

I have held off on doing an 8th/9th ed era marine army because I assumed that standard marines would be slowly going away. I got out of 40k entirely during 6th ed and sold all of my old armies, except for orks, guard, chaos and nids ... 4 marine armies, a necron army and a sisters of battle army were sold during 6th and 7th. I just could not stand the game anymore during that era.

8th ed. and Kill Team pulled me back in and now with 9th it seems like a good time to get back into most of the armies I used to have during my golden years of 40K .. 4th ed.

Anyway I'm staying cautiously optimistic that the core set is basically the exact same box as the indomitus box ... but maybe with just a standard core book or something.

    2. Not true. Goblin Gaming's backed (shopify) couldn't handle limiting stock to 300, It allowed Over 800 I think before they realised. All payments had been taken.
I suspect this happened elsewhere too.

      Delete
    3. That isn't always true. It isn't even always true of Gamesworkshops *own store* which (sometimes) lets you purchase items that have gone out of stock.

I once had to wait two months for my Stegadon due to that exact error.

      Delete
  4. Nope, I couldn't afford it until at least 22nd when I get paid, and when I checked the website they were all gone. Really wanted the necron stuff, but will have to wait until they hopefully get rereleased.

    1. coz it has Citadel/GW on the box. there are much more balanced rulesets out there, and miniature quality is a mixed bag, even with Citadel/GW on it, so quality is negligible at best so other arguments of "they aren't as good as X" don't stack up in reality. but if you like space marines or space elves or space cockroach dinosaurs, this is the only place to get that niches itch scratched.

  8. Maybe I'm just dumb, but why did this need to be a "limited release" instead of just a big standard starter box...?

I mean, other than to create FOMO and artificial scarcity.

Does that mean 8th edition won't have a starter set, ala Dark Imperium, etc?

    5. I suspect this was meant to launch at the end of psychic awakening and a starter set months later with 9th butbits all squished together weirdly due to the pandemic. The starter set might even just be Indomitus minus a few characters

      Delete
    6. I wouldn't be surprised if 9th doesn't have a starter. Many of their Start Collecting are becoming push fit.

Here's a prediction: 40K 9th won't have a Starter Set. The 8th Starter and the 9th launch set will be split into Start Collectings. 2 for Space Marines, 1 for Necrons, 1 for Death Guard.

    1. they could have made a million box sets, but it wouldn't have changed anything. the way they limit product is the reason why every one of these exclusive boxes is seen as an abject failure for consumers, but also a raging success for GW themselves. to them it doesn't matter who buys, as the numbers will suggest it's popular, and consumers like this type of business practice. it doesn't actually tell them who likes it, or got it, just it sold.

  20. I found one after hunting through 16 websites this morning. Got one at 10.17 Gw was sold out at 10.13, element games has it for store collection only and wayland games just refused to function. I was so close to just grabbing the rulebook alone but persevered.

I really hope that nurgle gives all the scalpers crotch rot for what they have done.

(Gw could have easily done a register your interest and then allocated preorders based on a list of people who wanted one box before putting the rest up for preorders normally)

  21. I got mine. Logged straight onto the store at 10:10 and ordered it without a hitch. What surprised me was that element games were selling the box at the same price as games workshop but if you wanted it delivered you can’t have it until their second wave on 8th August. So my mate gets his two weeks after me, for the same price as me, without the free objective markers.

    1. if overall there are 10k units (because let's be realistic, no other box was around 3000 units for a limited release box, not even the sisters, which are more popular than primaris, or necrons are, and the hype was so much bigger for sisters), element ordering 1/5th of the quantity means they'd not get that quantity. meaning it's entirely on Element and co for ordering much more than GW would supply them. if they ordered way too much, and it couldn't be delivered, it's certainly not GW's problem.

  24. Alas, I sat refreshing from 9.45am onwards. At 10.00am sharp, the site was down for maintenance. Seven minutes of ctrl + F5 later, it came up. I added Indomitus to basket. I clicked to go to checkout. As I was redirected to checkout, the 'down for maintenance' error page appeared again. Ctrl + F5 until 10.09am, at which time it tells me I cannot proceed because Indomitus is no longer available. Nine minutes. By 10.17am, the prices on Ebay had jumped by up to 100% percent.
The scalpers are the real winners today, and God knows how they got so many.

    1. Kind of simple really. By pulling a lot of their sales to online, it opened those sales up to folks to make more orders than they probably should be able to. Even if the web store only had a limit of X per order etc. A webstore can't police a limit per person/family/whatever as effectively as a physical employee can.

      Delete
    2. if you have a VPN you can fool online infrastructure to think you haven't bypassed the limits imposed. anyone can get a VPN for less than a weeks worth of donuts and coffee. and even a monkey could set it up. so theoretically scalpers could be 100 monkey's on typewriters. they'd certainly have the same intelligence as a scalper.

  26. Lol all the know-nothings claiming GW is trying to screw people, it's a "joke of a release" (despite the fact they printed more of these than they did any product release in their history), and stores are getting tons from their distros. Consumers are only permitted 3 from direct, so no, they didn't scalp a bunch. Even if they did, they would have gobbled up extra too.

GW isn't a massive corporation. They do have limited production capability, and since this box is also a massive profit loss compared to individual kits, they were probably only permitted to make so many (but still more than ever).

The same people claiming they would buy this box because GW sucks, or it's overpriced, or "not what they asked for" are now complaining they couldn't get one.

    3. "More product release in history" is patently false. They've produced more of their main product after release than this box. I didn't even read the rest of your comment, when you begin a tirade with a flat out false remark, I can tell it's not worth anyone's time.

      Delete
    4. Angel of Brass, actually most people here have consistently said they wanted one.

the only person i remember saying didn't want it was me. i still don't want this box set. my mind hasn't changed the moment it went on pre-order... those who wanted it before pre-order still want it. ....so did you impotently and impatiently jump on your computer to tell us we don't know what we want, and if it has GW on it, then we'll change our minds without any other considerations?

you don't buy from one man stores do you pal? no? so you'd not know one man stores limit to x3 boxes of limited products, because they don't want stock sitting around not selling, because product not selling cost money to store. the few times they did do that for x3+ boxes is where they still have some copies of those boxes, but they missed the pre-order and the main release wave of consumer spending, and no everyone has theirs, no one wants the copies sitting in store, so the manager loses out in the eyes of GW for not being a good enough manager. so stores are limited (if one man stores) to 3 copies of any expensive box.

oh and this isn't some internet knowitall either. my local GW manager (doesn't know insider info but does know how to sell plastic crack to a plastic crackhead) told me so because i am a local that helps him stay open. in times like now, consumers like me are invaluable.

    5. When will people learn to not reply to angel of brass. It's the same guy as Randy Randalnan. Don't waste your time.

    6. 'GW isn't a massive corporation.'

You are wrong. GAW are in the FTSE 250 index, trade internationally and have factories producing products outside of their Nottingham factory in China (some model boxes even state 'Made in China', usually when it says in larger letters 'Designed in the UK').

Their share value has risen over 1500% over the past 5 years.

They are certainly, at least a 'Large Corporation'.

      Secondly

'This box is also a massive profit loss compared to individual kits'

      Factually wrong.

Given the models themselves cannot be purchased outside this box, the retail value of the boxed set *is* the retail value of the miniatures inside. If this were, for example, the Tooth and Claw set or Wrath and Rapture, which *is* available as separate packs, then you can say a 'saving' has been made, but since nothing here is available individually - no 'saving' has been made and no loss of profit has occurred.

This is why the single option starter sets are healthy for business. They are simplified models, mass produced to a set retail volume and profit margin with guaranteed sales at the end of it. As a core part of their marketing strategy and business plan - they absolutely are not 'a massive profit loss compared to individual kits' because they a) aren't available separately (unless in smaller starter sets) b) are valued and costed at exactly the price they are sold at.

The only thing you have proven in your newest rant is how ignorant you are of the retail industry. Its almost impossible to take anything you (Angel of Brass) seriously when the words you type are almost pure hyperbole.

  29. I’m not a GW apologist, they do many things wrong. However, they can’t seem to win if they do limited editions for people to collect. If they make it one per person and collection from stores to limit scalpers, people will complain they have to go to store. If they make it online and limit it to one per person, scalpers will just change their email address. It is meant to be limited edition so if everyone gets one it’s no longer limited edition.

The issue here is the scalping. I work for a company that made hand sanitiser and gave it to the NHS for free. Next thing we know is someone is selling it on Facebook marketplace. Where that’s money to be made, human greed will always find a way.

The best thing to do would’ve been to launch the standard box alongside. Then only some of the models would’ve been scalped. I also think £40 for the rule book is obscene.

    1. it's not about winning. it's about successfully selling product. regardless who (a real consumer or scalper) buys it's still a valid sale. GW wont lose sleep if you miss out, or a scalper makes a profit.

Pretty crazy, but then I don't see why people needed to have 2-3 boxes, shouldn't this have been limited to 1 per account transaction online ? Given it took 5 mins to get my order through, more people would have got their 1 copy, and at a push 2 copies in the time everything sold out

But success in setting an alarm and getting up early on Saturday (boooo) and not giving up

To be fair to GW, when I've wanted tickets to a concert with a big name, tickets would be gone in less than 5 mins, and at least we didn't get forced into a queue to get onto the GW website

  38. One of the main reasons I haven't purchased any new models since thousand sons were redone is the lack of integrity most UK companies have. Used to work for Land Rover trying to get the sales in the US up as a marketing strategist. Ended up having to sue them for multiple reasons. I won the case. I also played runescape back when I was in high school until I graduated in 2006, that company penalized regular players to make it harder to use botting, and that strategy did nothing the curb the issue. Lack of integrity is the issue, the regular English people are fine, but the higher up people in charge of companies have zero integrity, and lack the decency to hide it. Since my move to the states I've noticed here they at least try to cover their trails a bit instead of rubbing your customers nose in it. I may move to Canada soon, I hope my ventures there are better than the American Companies, or my home countries. Seriously hate how embarrassing england based companies are, and they wonder why they can't grow.
