Hot on the heels of Skies of Fire, Forge World will soon release its first two aircraft for Aeronautica Imperialis. You’ve already seen the Arvus Lighter and Vulture Gunship, but today we’re taking a look at their rules and showing you why you’ll want them both in your hanger.
Arvus Lighters
This ubiquitous Imperial transport is primarily used to deliver cargo to and from orbit – it’s been designed to slip in and out of an active war zone as quickly and safely as possible.
The first thing you’ll notice is the total lack of weapons – with their small size, single pilot, and focus on doing one thing very well, there’s no room for distraction. Of course, that means you’ll need to protect them, but they’re just 10 points apiece with no upgrades.
As you’d imagine, Arvus Lighters are excellent for any mission that requires you to drop off or pick up ground assets. They’re fast, manoeuvrable, and can easily disengage using the Valuable Cargo and Rocket Boosters special rules after the job is done.
The Arvus Lighter excels at one thing – getting cargo and troops on and off planet in a hurry, and there are a number of missions where you will find this skill invaluable. Imperial Navy and Astra Millitarum players will want a couple at their disposal, just like the next aircraft…
Vulture Gunships
While there’s no shortage of firepower in the Imperial Navy and Astra Militarum, this pugnacious gunship will find a place in the heart of every flight commander.
Let’s break down what you get for a mere 20 points… The base frame has just one heavy bolter, but the Vulture has an impressive range of weapon upgrades available. This Fighter is also one of the most manoeuvrable aircraft in Aeronautica Imperialis. Not only can it hover thanks to having a minimum speed of 0, but it’s the first aircraft to have access to the Ace Manoeuvre Wing Over.
When you combine this with the ability to essentially sidestep before firing, the Vulture becomes one of the most slippery aircraft in the game, able to easily turn the tables on aggressors.
Use this ability to ensure you’re at the perfect range for your weapons or to get out of an enemy arc if you find yourself outmanoeuvred. Talking of weapons, let’s have a look at what else you can equip a Vulture Gunship with…
It costs a mere four points to arm the Vulture Gunship with the devastating punisher cannon, which puts out an incredible 10 shots at medium range – and with its amazing manoeuvrability, maintaining the correct distance should be easy. There’s also a wide variety of additional weapons, from rocket pods to bombs and missiles, all of which can give the Vulture Gunship the flexibility for almost any mission.
Both of these aircraft expand your tactical options in new ways, and they’ll find a place in nearly all Imperial squadrons. They will be available to pre-order soon.
