This Saturday sees The Dreaded Ambull – the first dedicated expansion for Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress – available for pre-order. You can learn more about the Ambull itself in our previous article But, as with the various explorers and hostile forces who feature in the Blackstone Fortress game, the Ambull and Borewyrm Infestations in Warhammer 40,000 too!

First off, let’s take a closer look at the Ambull.
It’s ‘dreaded’ for a reason – the Ambull hits hard and won’t go down easily either! It also has two handy abilities that enable it to rapidly heal and relocate across the battlefield at great speed.
Even the Borewyrm Infestations are surprisingly vicious, despite their diminutive size.
Borewyrm Infestations also share the Ambull’s Rapid Tunnelling ability and are harder to target with ranged weapons by virtue of their size. Ambulls and Borewyrm Infestations are perfect for narrative or open play, though we’ve included points if that’s how you like to balance your games. That got us thinking about some cool ideas for missions that could feature these fearsome creatures. Here are just a few:
  • An Astra Militarum infantry patrol encounters an Ambull while making a sweep of the jungle.
  • Drukhari arena battle pitches Wyches against an Ambull and a number of other xenos beasts.
  • Space Marine squad must perform a blood trial by hunting an Ambull.
  • An enraged Ambull seeks to defend its nest from Tyranid vanguard organisms.
  • Sly Marbo stalks an Ambull through a death world forest (the poor creature!).

But there are other ways to add some Ambull action to your games without it being the main focus of the mission. Here are some other options:
  • Modify the Genestealer Infestation battlezone rules from Vigilus Defiant, replacing the Genestealer Infestation datasheet with that of an Ambull.
  • One randomly determined objective marker is actually an Ambull nest.
  • At the start of each battle round, the players roll-off to see who controls a roving Ambull for the duration of that battle round.
