My favorite thing about blood angels so far are two units, their assault terminators, and their devastators. So here is a list I quickly put together to field both. Power Armour; Signum; Bolt Pistol; Bolter; And They Shall Know No Fear; Combat Squads; The Red Thirst)<br /> <br /> <strong>Total Roster Cost: 2498</strong><br /> <br /> Both tactical squads drop down to give great teleport options for the incoming terminators. Tacticals with missile launcher are combat squadded to hold a backfield objective. Obvious devastator fire support, with assault marines deployed and rushing across the field with a priest amongst them, in order to give midfield tactical squads feel no pain. Assault marines in the pod, come down later for objective grabbing or armor breaking. Assault terminators clean the board with feel no pain and furious charge. Note that one squad with the reclusiarch will get to re-roll misses when they charge as well. The list probably should include another, for the second squad, but this list is a good start.<br /> <br /> As for the devastators. They move into position, as quickly as they can if it's dawn of war. They are in good numbers so should be very very durable, and once bigger things hit the board, should be a low target priority. While I was helping throughout the game and deployment, the one thing he kept wanting to do, was to move his heavy weapons. In fact, at deployment I suggested that he change his deployment and move his heavy weapons from where he had them to one of two elevated locations with good command of the field, so they could fire every round of the game. Though this might seem like common sense to the more experienced player, I still see this time and time again. I see it almost every game amongst new players, and rooks (1 and 2 years into it), perhaps because with some its becoming a habit.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Here is a little advice. You only have 5-7 rounds of play. Expect 5. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>Heavy Weapons: </strong>Deploy these where they have good line of sight, and don't have to move more than once. Get down at table level, and take a look at their firing arcs (for tanks), and line of sight for infantry. Ideally they should be placed into cover, or can take a single move to get into cover. If you are moving these units 2 out of 5 rounds of the game, then 40% of the game you are not firing with them. Heavy long range weaponry, should be shooting most of the game. If you move them, seriously ask yourself why. If the reason is a good one (like get into that cover, contest that objective), then do it. Otherwise they should be performing the job they were set to do, stand and shoot.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>Special Weapons (assault and rapid fire): </strong>There are a variety of ways we get these to where we want to get them. The number one rule is, keep them moving. Assault weapons tend to be meltas, and rapid fire weapons plasma guns. These should be striking your opponents where you choose. Get a move on, you don't win 40k 5th edition by standing still.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><strong>Assault Units: </strong>Mostly the same thing as your special weapons, get them to where you need them as quickly as you can. The one nice thing about assault units is for every turn you get, you get two assault phases. You also get multiple assaults. Meaning that once you do reach your opponents, it is often much easier to take out large numbers of models than would otherwise be possible with shooting. You need far less time to do your damage. Once again though, you must make sure you are always progressing these units towards your objectives or planned targets.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><strong>Summary: </strong>I haven't hit every unit type or mix of units there is. The primary thing to remember is, that each unit should have a purpose and role on the tabletop. Every round they are not performing that role, is a wasted round, and lessens your armies efficiency and hinders an over-all battle plan. It is always good to analyze how your units are performing for you game after game. A unit that is cool, and will be awesome someday when they get a chance, will only be so if it can perform it's role. Otherwise your cool unit is a waste of points, and in some cases was a waste of money.

Although his uniform supported numerous medals of victorious battles and command, it was his voice that boomed with authority. Bridge officers and crew alike, scrambled in haste at his command, and within moments he was alone.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     Admiral Silva turned towards the two astropaths standing in their alcove. They stood supported by wires and metal tubes that gave them life and focus. The flashing lights of the alcove flickered, as the primary lights to the command bridge were extinguished, only to be brought back online as back up power was restored. The containment field came on, causing the floor beneath the admiral's feet to vibrate with an audible hum.  Air circulation, power, and communications were now all localized within the containment field surrounding the Admiral's command bridge.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     The admiral looked across the room at the two remaining dark robed figures. They stood silently, their frail and blind bodies here held in place by steel brackets within the alcove. They hung there limp, their only purpose to receive and deliver and transmissions through the warp. The message he was waiting for, would be only one of two things. </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     "I will be quick and painless, as much as I am able old friend", the admiral thought about the commander, Commander Kireg and his officers. He knew them all personally, for the imperial battlecruiser "Crusade" had been taken from his command less than a year ago by a dangerous, and immeasurably ambitious man of the Ordo Hereticus, Inquisitor Lord Faeit. Now his orders were to destroy the ship, and everyone on board. He simply awaited the order through astropaths message. He sat down, resting his elbows atop the sector display and waited.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     "Receiving message, priority Alpha", the astropaths replied in unison. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     It was only one of the astropaths that began to relay the message. Admiral Silva looked up from the display thinking about the silent astropath but for a moment. "Admiral Silva, of the Battleforce Hydra........" When its vision cleared, it looked down upon the dwarf sized human, as bright plasma shots tore into the demons flesh. Enraged, the demon grabbed the man's arm in one talon and it's body in the other. A quick pull ripped the offending arm off, disarming the man. One last plasma shot ripped into the chest of the demon as it tore the mans arm off, and both man and demon staggered backwards.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     Sounds of lasfire could be heard outside the sealed doors to the command chamber. Both demon and man stood facing each other. The demons rage overwhelmed everything within it, its muscled rippled, its talons flexed. It took two slow steps towards the one armed admiral, who struggled to stand defiantly against the beast. As admiral staggered and fell to a knee, the demon grabbed him, and with it's inhuman strength, broke the mans body, his spine snapping a single sickening crack. </div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     The demon turned towards the chambers door, and casually threw the dead mans body to the side. Within moments the demon had ripped open the floor panels, and the containment field failed.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">     A frantic battle took place as the demon left the admirals chambers and headed in the direction of the captains bridge. Las-shots followed by screams were heard in the demons wake. Back in the admiral's chamber, the sector display suddenly lit up, flashing a swarm of contacts, the fleet was under a heavy attack. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div>     Meanwhile, the surviving astropath, still locked in its trance, continued to repeat its lone message. I would like to see tournaments set up for two days of mayhem. A first day of games acting as qualifiers and placement followed by a brutal second day of single elimation games.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Scores etc are kept to place the top players into the games for the following day. A simple bracket format, you win and move on works great. The problem I find is that point system tournaments come down to designing lists to simply blow your opponent out of the water. These lists are not necessarily winning lists, but designed to take advantage of strengths and hope you dont run into your rock vs paper. For example, put two excellent lists with excellent generals head to head. Hopefully we have a tough battle that is close and devastatingly painful for both players. In most tournaments, both of these players would knock each other out of placing well in the tournament. However, these are fun to watch, and fun to play, and what we all hope happens. Tournaments designed for fluff play, or designed for players lucky enough to play weaker opponents are not what we want.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><iframe align="left" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=faei212-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=1589947789&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align: left; height: 245px; padding-right: 10px; padding-top: 5px; width: 131px;"></iframe>This is why I've come down to having a qualifier or placement day at the tables. Its the guarentee youll get this many games in for coming down to participate and sets up the single elimation bracket. Day one is where seperate awards, for painting, sportsmanship etc can be given. However, the real battle starts day 2. A single elimination bracketed tournament, with the sole purpose of pitting the two top armies up against each other in hard fought rough battle that everyone would be interested in coming back to watch. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div>While I havent set down the details of how all this would go down, it seems rather simple to have and run. When it gets closer to the time I will be running a tournament (Im sure it wont take too long, I think in May I ran one at a local shop), I will gather up the details. Games Day UK 2010 is expected to give us the "They're coming in November" news. I really can't wait for it, so I have already started a model count for what I have, and what I will be needing to get. </div><br /> The rumor mill is always going strong. It is apparent so far, that Dark Eldar will come to us in a couple waves, with new plastics sets. It seems that wyches will be amongst these, as will the obvious warriors. Raiders, Ravagers, and Hellions are others on the list.<br /> <br /> Games Day UK 2010 happens on Sept. 26th. I will be staying on top of what is happening on the Dark Eldar front. However, I especially enjoy the games were my opponent is putting up his best, playing his best, both armies are painted, table looks great, and we have a hard hitting game. Those games are absolutely the best of what warhammer 40k has to bring on the tabletop. The hard part becomes when you don't know the player very well, and you don't know his army and play level. Here I tend to blow someone out often too quickly. There is nothing worse than playing a single round of game play, and your opponent surrendering. </div><br /> I've come to the conclusion that most often, I have the most fun, bringing a very sub par list. It helps game play, helps my opponent last a few rounds, and in general it helps improve the game talk afterwards, which I enjoy tremendously. League nights, Saturday 40k day, etc, I have started doing this where ever I am going to play. I only bring out my faeit 212 list when asked to, or prepping for a tournament. <br /> <br /> Tournament play. Here is where I have been having issues with tournaments of late. To start. I don't enjoy soft score tournaments. Ive never played anyone that acted like a prick at an ard boyz, or ard boyz style tournament, even know I am sure they exist. (its up to the store to get rid of these players). Painted scores tied into the tournament are often far too subjective, it should just be called a popularity contest. <br /> <br /> Even through all this. What I do not enjoy about tournaments is the fact that they don't encourage good games. You are judged simply on how well you blow out your opponent, or how lucky you get with your opponent. If two top players face off, they will knock each other out of the running in the tournament. This is what I am a little bored with. The game should be a simple win or loss. Play more, not less, this is how you get the best of the best. I know 40k is not a sport, but I cant think of any game out there competitively, that you are judged on how well you blow each of your opponents out. Even a round robin tournament would work. What I am proposing is to get rid of tournament scenarios that we see every tournament, that rely upon point systems based on how badly you kill your opponent. I want good games, not blow outs, especially on the top tables. I want a finals match, that is mind blowing, not one that knocks both players out of winning the tournament, so that a lesser player wins.<br /> <br /> I am going to work hard on a tournament type here. I will be posting it once it is done, and hopefully running such tournament here in a month or so at a local store. No tournament that relies upon your chance of playing the weakest link in the tournament, or relies upon soft scores. <br /> <br /> Your comments on tournament types are welcome.

Despite knowing this, sometimes I can't help myself and will put in a very quick and discreet, "you didn't do this correct, if you want to look it up, its on page such and such". </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">A buddy of mine recently moved, and was checking out the local scene. Apparently their so-called top player was very much in the wrong on how he was assaulting. Multiple assaults apparently don't need to stay in coherency in that town, and if they do, you can move as little as you want  in order to maintain that coherency in order to assault in two complete different directions.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">So where does all this come from? It is after all a pretty simple rule set, with the least amount of grey areas that I can remember in an edition of warhammer of 40k. Even so, 5th edition is somehow ridden with more misinterpretations and misreading that I have seen in previous editions. Number one problem, silly Internet interpretations. Not to smack dakka dakka, but their forums are full of some pretty extremely silly Internet rulings like obscurement (see here if you are in that crowd <a href="http://natfka.blogspot.com/2010/05/obscurement-much-to-your-demise.html">http://natfka.blogspot.com/2010/05/obscurement-much-to-your-demise.html</a>). Second problem, mathhammer. Math hammer tends to lead to sometimes creative min/maxing, and the rules sometimes get lost or overlooked at this point. It's not that math hammer is bad, knowing the probable chances of something happening can explain why your single lascannon shot cant kill a rhino. Some people just get carried away with min/maxing. Back in 3rd ed, it was all about it, with 5 man squads and heavy weapons. Last problem, is bad advice. Know who you are listening to, and look it up..... please.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">While these reasons are valid, they often lead to the most disputes. If someone just doesn't know the rules well, or makes a mistake, its often very very simple to correct, and the game moves on. A mistake is a mistake, who cares, and move on. I am on purpose leaving out comments on the just plain dumb, or the double dumb. I hate rules lawyering, but I also dislike long drawn out dumb arguments about a rule that is pretty damn simple. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div>Have fun, no fist fights, and try not to geek out. Its a game, and even in tournaments, most people that I tend to face have been fed a bunch of garbage. In tournaments, just call a judge over, and don't take things personal if they don't know what they are talking about (I tend to have my rulebook highlighted, and my army list specific things marked to speed things up). During pick up games, try and correct it, if that fails, just don't play the person again or change stores if they just don't get it.

Mostly that I hear the word "cheese" all to much around the game table. I'm going to be very direct with the problem, and why it is heard at almost every league night. For the most part, there is a severe lack of understanding of the rules and game mechanics. Players that play this game, even much more than I, seem to somehow never read the rulebook, much less their own codex. Then when something comes up, someone uses a combination that works well in a game, its suddenly called cheese. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Here is an example. I've had my dark eldar out lately, for no other reason than they suck, and with a new codex, I wanted to get in some games with the current codex. So, I grabbed my 30 mandrakes, 2 webway portals and hit the table. Everything came on and hit the table round three. When it did, it was brutal, my timing was perfect. What I heard was how cheesy mandrakes are. How ridicules a talos is. All this whining about cheese units and combos really leads to only one thing. Lack of understanding and reading. While my timing was impeccable, and my use of my units went near perfect, there was a lack of understanding of even how his army should be working. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /> </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I could understand his frustration if I was being a prick, however, I was offering up everything on what each unit could do, long before they were even deployed. Instead, each webway was approached with his melta units, and troop choices. They were easy pickings for units that could assault right out of the webway. Definitely I must have fielded a cheesy army. Hearing that this and that are cheese, gets really old. You cant even discuss game tactics any more. Now I know its only a small group of players that are like this, but remember cheese spreads, and it has become sort of an epidemic. Even taking a crap list to the table, I still hear it, and other players that tend to win most of their games are hearing a lot. It's a severe lack of understanding, most often of 40k's game mechanics, and sometimes of special rules or combos that someone is fielding.<br /> <br /> OK. Here is my positive spin. Read the rules. Re-read the rules. Your codex too, and others when you get the opportunity. Instead of saying cheese, which reeks of poor sportsmanship, say "Oh wow, that can be really powerful (or cool), how could of I have beaten it?." In these friendly games, look up the rules, and ask your opponent to show them to you when something you haven't read or seen comes up. Its all there in the rule book. Just read it. This is warhammer 40k 5th edition. It is a game with dice, and no army is unbeatable, and everything on the table has a counter to it.
