Preview on Vehicles

"Your tank just took a serious hit from a 120mm anti tank cannon firing incendiary shells. You know its going to be bad if your opponent gets a solid hit. Of course he hits you with a good roll of the die and you cringe when its discovered to be a critical hit. You take additional hull damage (toughness) and a Core System is about to meet its end. Wanting to return fire you decide to take the hit damaging your mobility, leaving you immobilized on the battlefield, but ready to return fire"

Vehicles are another new addition from the 1st Age to the future ages. Humanoids especially have a lot of focus into them and can create their own custom classes of vehicles allowing for a tremendous amount of flexibility and options. Other domains as well expand into vehicles to include Mechs, Constructs, and even civilian vehicles that can be used in the game.

Previous Previews:

Before jumping in its important to know that in The Genesys Project damage to non-living models is done to the models toughness, which for you gamers already into the game know that your toughness + a die roll is your save against taking damage. So the more your vehicle is getting beat up, the easier it is to damage.

Each hit can do 1 damage to your vehicle.

Ways to do additional damage

1. Weapons or Munitions that do additional damage are another method of taking out vehicles quickly. A Thermite Rounds for instance do additional damage to non-living models.

2. Traits and Abilities: There are other traits etc that give additional damage as well. These vary and each domain has access.

3. Critical Hits are the obvious way to do additional damage to vehicles or virtually anything else for that matter. The higher the critical hit is, the more damage you will get from the hit.

  • For example a critical hit 2 over what is able to be saved against.... does 2 additional damage. So if your toughness is a 4 and the result you need to save against is a 12 (toughness +d6 to equal or beat a 12) this would be a critical hit and do an additional 2 damage for a total of 3.

Now lets jump in and talk about Core Systems

Core Systems are a key element of vehicles letting us know just how many systems a vehicle has. (more advanced vehicles/mech etc will have additional Core Systems. Examples of Core Systems in a Vehicle.

  • Crew Compartments,
  • Mobility (wheels, tracks, etc),
  • Weapons (these can take up several core systems
  • Passenger Compartment (for Transports)
  • Heavy Armor (Extremely well protected vehicles)

Taking a hard hit can severely damage vehicles. Anytime you take a critical hit a Core System is damaged. The best part is though that the owner of the vehicle gets to choose which Core System is damaged. In this way a damaged system does not take out the vehicle completely (vehicles running around the table by luck of the draw with no guns is a good example for you tread heads out there)

This is a huge balancing tool allowing vehicles to take a hit and still be operational (somewhat at least). A damaged Crew Compartment will have the crew take hits possibly killing them, a hit to your mobility is likely to disable your movement, to your heavy armor would damage it reducing the armor values and a weapon of course taking damage no longer works.

Devastating Hits: The last and final thing to know about taking damage to vehicles is a Devastating Hit. Even though you do not get to save against taking damage from a critical hit, you do have to make a save against instantly being destroyed called a devastating hit. It's simple to do.

Take a critical hit and make a save equal to the amount of additional damage that is being done.

  • For example using the numbers above for our critical hit, the owner of the model would get a 2+ save to avoid being instantly destroyed.

So when it comes to vehicles critical hits are quite damaging and are easy to figure out. Lets assume you have a 2nd Age light vehicle with a Toughness 7 and Armor 1. Essentially a total toughness of 8 to save with.

You get hit with a cannon that is strength 10. A high strength weapon this will reduce your toughness by 2 reducing your total toughness down to a 6. Your opponent rolls well with a total result of 15 resulting in a critical hit that will do an additional 3pts of damage (ouch) and you will get a save against a devastating hit on 3+.

Results-
  1. Making your save will result in a total of 4 damage severely weakening your vehicle (now having a Toughness 3 with 1 armor and you must choose a Core System to take the damage. You choose that damage to be taken by the vehicles mobility which stops it in its tracks no longer able to move. The vehicle is now extremely vulnerable to just about anything. It might be time for the driver and crew to grab a weapon and abandon the vehicle.
  2. Failing your save and the vehicle explodes. Anyone inside takes a hit quite possibly dying in a raging scrap of metal and flames.

Customizing your vehicles and then taking them out onto the tabletop is a tremendous amount of fun. Of course blowing up your opponents vehicles always has a certain level of satisfaction that just cannot be achieved in any other way.

Later we will talk about customizing your vehicles.
