Gondor at War – the first supplement for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game – is up for pre-order this weekend, so we’re continuing our coverage of the awesome new content that lies within its pages. In yesterday’s article, we introduced you to the 29 Narrative Scenarios and linked campaign rules that make up the first half of the book. Today, we’re taking a look at some of the new Heroes that fought for and against Gondor during the War of the Ring, as well as showcasing the latest innovation for the game – Legendary Legions.
There are some champions of Men who fought to defend Gondor against the encroaching darkness but have never been realised with miniatures and rules profiles. Well, not any more! Gondor at War introduces a selection of new Heroes for Minas Tirith, Rohan and the Dead of Dunharrow – all of whom stood beside Gondor during its darkest days.
You’ll no doubt have seen the incredible new miniatures for the Wardens of Gondor, Húrin the Tall and Ingold, as well as Denethor and Irolas. The rules for these noble lords of Minas Tirith are all included in Gondor at War, along with other debutants for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game such as Théodred’s loyal aide-de-camp, Elfhelm, and the chief of Théoden’s Royal Guard, Déorwine.
There is also a profile for Dernhelm, the guise lady Éowyn assumed when she rode to war in secret after the muster of Rohan at Dunharrow. And yes, she can take Merry into war with her! On the topic of Dunharrow, you will soon be able to field Heralds of the Dead to lead warbands of Warriors of the Dead.
Of course, the defenders of Gondor didn’t have it all their own way – the Witch-king of Angmar and his lieutenant, Gothmog, had a number of cruel and ambitious underlings who served their masters well. New named characters Zagdûsh and Goroth join the Mordor army list along with Gothmog’s Enforcer and Guritz.
There were others who served the Great Eye – evil men from Far Harad, the Corsairs of Umbar and the Serpent Horde of Suladân. Along with the greatly feared Mûmak War Leader, heroic reinforcements are set to arrive in the guise of Delgamar, the ruthless Gatemaster of Umbar, and Râza respectively.
For those who really enjoy Matched Play games, one of the most exciting features of Gondor at War must be the introduction of Legendary Legions. These bespoke army lists are designed to represent a famed fighting force that rose to prominence during the War of the Ring. As a result, they cannot be allied with any other army lists, though many of them include combinations of Heroes and Warriors drawn from a number of different factions. Legendary Legions also reward you with powerful special rules that apply to some, if not all, of the models within it.
One such Legendary Legion is the fabled Grey Company of Halbarad, the elven twins Elladan and Elrohir, and the Rangers of the North. Along with Legolas and Gimli, these loyal followers and companions of Aragorn joined the heir of Elendil on his perilous journey through of the Paths of the Dead and beyond. It’s a small, elite army but benefits greatly from Aragorn receiving Andúril as a free upgrade in addition to the Passing of the Grey Company ability:
The book features eight such Legendary Legions, ranging from the Riders of Théoden to the Grand Army of the South that they bravely charged in the Battle of Pelennor Fields after routing the main Orc horde:
Legendary Legions are designed to add even more narrative and theme to your Matched Play games, and we expect to be seeing these beauties in tournaments around the world very soon.
Remember that Gondor at War is up for pre-order on Saturday (along with the Three Hunters, if you’re looking to start your own Grey Company), so now’s the time to muster your own Legendary Legions in preparation to save Gondor or see it burn
