Presence of Faeit: Useless Units in 5th and Dark Eldar

There has been so much commotion over the last few weeks, with rumors of the new 6th edition rules, the release of the latest flyers, and of course the dissapearance of 5th edition rulebooks, that the quiet going on is a little disturbing. Its the calm before the storm, or possibly the calm between storms. We go through this a little bit at the beginning of each month.

Presence of Faeit is my weekly editorial. I generally report during the week what is going on, and today is my day to comment on what exactly it is that I am thinking of.

Mandrakes and other Useless Units
The great equalizer as I see it. Here is a chance, and just a chance, to bring some life back into some units that are just not used. Some were obvious mistakes on the shoulders of the writers, others are just units that do not work well.

The greatest example of one of the worst units ever made during 5th edition are the Dark Eldar Mandrakes. Their supposed to be a close combat unit....... however that was some serious fail without grenades. So what they ended up being was a shooting that cannot shoot..... since they need a pain token in order to shoot. Their shooting abilities are decent though. A close combat unit that cannot assault or a shooting unit that cannot shoot, either way there was a lot of fail there.

With Mandrakes they have a very unusual weapon for close combat, in the codex labelled as.. an evil-looking blade. Despite lack of creativity for the name of a weapon, here is a chance for GW to breathe some life into a unit. Give the weapon an ap value that matters and the game is on. They still have grenade issues, but no word on rules for terrain yet.

So Games Workshop if done properly could take some of these units, and actually breathe some serious life into them with the new edition. The Mandrake is possibly one of the best looking models in the game, with possibly the worst rules for the tabletop.

Speaking of Dark Eldar
Since a lot of my editorial today mentions Dark Eldar, its quite obvious that I am looking forward to getting them onto the tabletop again. With the prize of Asdrubael Vect being made by Mr. Pink, as well as flyers and 6th edition coming soon, I am quite excited to start getting dark eldar onto the tabletop with the new ruleset.

I do think I shelved them out of being discouraged with how the codex works, and out of having to work and customize just too many models. For those new here, I have been customizing old school Dark Eldar, into a new look. Warriors, Raiders, and just about everything else old school that I have (about 7000pts).

No Caffiene
Taking two this morning on the editorial. Apparently Im having a rough morning. On the bright side, I do see that my post up on Bols went live this morning. Check it out if you get the chance.
