The new generation of codexes has been a huge part of what’s made the current edition of Warhammer 40,000 so rewarding for players. With thematic faction abilities that allow players to thematically represent their favourite armies on the tabletop, a diverse range of advanced Stratagems to keep every game fresh, and deep list construction that rewards multiple types of force, we know that waiting your turn to receive a codex can be hard, and the game design team have been working as hard as they can to keep up the pace of releases.
With most Imperium and Chaos factions now in possession of a codex of their own, we’re very happy to announce that three prominent xenos armies will be having their moment in the sun very soon:
The DrukhariT’au Empire and Necrons are some of the most fascinating factions in Warhammer 40,000, and their new codexes realise them in rich detail, not just in background but in how they play. From exciting new mechanics to subtle tweaks, you’ll find these codexes each fun to battle with or against.
Codexes are one thing – but what about new models? This year, a new kind of Imperial Knight will rise – meet the Knight Armiger:
Smaller than their cousins and crewed by aspiring nobles, low-born commoners with a knack for war, or even the bastard children of Barons and High Kings, Armigers hunt and fight at the flanks of their larger kin. Knight Armigers will open up new tactical possibilities for Imperial Knights players, like a medieval lord hunting with his hounds, benefiting from a wider range of army builds.
The Necrons, on the other hand, will be receiving reinforcement from a new character…
Crypteks are an iconic element of Necron lore; where other factions use warp-craft or magic to accomplish their goals, Crypteks help the Necrons accomplish their lofty aims of galactic reconquest through pure SCIENCE. This particular Cryptek is the first ever to be cast in plastic and features what looks like some new wargear.
Meanwhile, in the Mortal Realms, a figure from the long lost past has returned. We almost feel sorry for Chaos…
Following hot on the heels of Maggotkin of Nurgle and Legions of Nagash, the Daughters of Khaine battletome presents Aelves as you’ve never seen them before.
The Daughters of Khaine are an army of religious fanatics, combining the cruelty for which their predecessors in the World-That-Was were known with unbreakable faith in Khaine and their queen, Morathi.
The Fyreslayers have fast become a fan favourite faction in Warhammer Age of Sigmar – after all, there’s an undeniable charm about playing an army of avaricious duardin Berzerkers. We think they might have gotten in over their heads with their latest venture, however…
The Chosen Axes are Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire’s latest warband, bringing with them new fighters, new tactics to master and loads of new cards that every warband will be able to make use of. Fyreslayers may be slow, but they’re monstrously powerful in close combat – and Sigmar help you if you let them capture an objective. We’ll be looking at these guys in-depth nearer to their release, and even Warhammer Age of Sigmar players who don’t play Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire will be able to include them in their army with a pair of new warscrolls.
Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire has quickly evolved into a flourishing competitive game, with Grand Clashes around the world selling out as players look for opportunities to prove their mastery in the City of Mirrors. This year, you’ll have even more opportunities to get involved in competitive play (and win some awesome loot) with the Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire Matched Play pack, a seasonal package that allows your local independent store to run leagues of their own. Starting in February, you’ll be able to rise through the ranks and win alternative art cards, limited edition accessories and, for the very best, a quarterly trophy.
Whichever army you play in Warhammer Age of Sigmar, the coming months will allow you to test your mettle in a new kind of campaign as part of Malign Portents. For weeks, you’ve watched the teasers and read the stories of the first chapter in this dark new age – now, it’s your turn.
We knew this campaign was coming, but the Studio Preview revealed just how it would work. The Dread Solstice Campaign is a branching narrative, where the games you play and models you paint can be used to decide where the story goes next. Imagine a huge, collaborative ‘choose your own adventure’ story and you’ll have the basic idea of how it works.
In Dread Solstice, every choice has consequences, not just in terms of new rules or the ongoing story of the campaign, but for the Mortal Realms as a whole. Just as the Seeds of Hope from 2017’s Season of War campaign have transformed into an important part of the story of the Age of Sigmar, so too will the decisions you make in this campaign influence the future of the Mortal Realms for years to come.
Taking part in Dread Solstice is simple, as every Warhammer and Games Workshop store, and plenty of independent retailers will be participating. We’ll share exactly how you can get involved closer to the beginning of the campaign. In the meantime, keep mustering your armies and following the narrative of Malign Portents on the Malign Portents website.
We want this year for Warhammer Age of Sigmar to be the best ever, and the new releases, such as the Daughters of Khaine, and narrative developments like Malign Portents, are just a taste of what’s to come. This year, we’re committed to continuously improving the rules and gameplay for Warhammer Age of Sigmar, too, supported by a new model for FAQs, errata and rules updates.
Firstly, every battletome will receive an errata document two weeks after release, dealing with any ambiguities that emerge and helping to make sure that your games run as smoothly as possible. Subsequent to this, bigger rules changes will be handled through more encompassing FAQ documents released every January and July, each in time for the upcoming tournament season. Finally, each year will see a new General’s Handbookfor you to enjoy, packed with content – including new ways to play, allegiance abilities for factions which lack them, battleplans and matched play points profiles. In short, you’ll be able to benefit from regular, consistent updates to the game you love without having to worry about sudden major changes.
Last, but very far from least, we can finally confirm some of the winning nominees of this year’s Warhammer Heroes. Warhammer Heroes was set up to recognise the people who make our hobby great, and we’ve been bowled over by the sheer volume of nominations – it’s inspiring and humbling to know there are so many awesome people involved with Warhammer. As such, we’ve chosen 8 winners from the US & Canada alone this year, as follows:
We’ll be going into detail of how and why we picked these heroes in a follow-up article shortly. These heroes will be rewarded with medals, along with a special celebration ceremony and dinner at AdeptiCon later in the year, and permanent enshrinement at Warhammer World – worthy prizes for their incredible deeds. There are still more winners to be announced from outside North America, and if you nominated a candidate this year who didn’t win, please nominate them again for the next Warhammer Heroes – there are plenty of heroes in our community who still warrant recognition.
