We all know that in Aeronautica Imperialis the sky’s the limit. Now, thanks to the Taros Air War campaign book, you can also fight aerial duels underground! Today, we’re taking a look at the incredible subterranean assault rules.

The war on Taros between the Imperium and the T’au Empire was an epic confrontation. Nowhere was this truer than in the skies above the planet, as Thunderbolts and Lightnings fought deadly duels with Barracudas. Due to the geography of the planet, both forces also made use of the extensive cave systems for army HQs, storage depots and a myriad of other functions. Often the best way to attack such a location was with airpower, and the new subterranean assault scenario lets you recreate these daring raids.

The scenario features one force as the attacker and the other as the defender. The attacker seeks to land their troops, while the defender attempts to stop them. What makes the scenario interesting is the cave system special rules, which see each player place areas of terrain to represent stalagmites and other rocky outcrops.
Make sure you get your manoeuvers right, though, because if you crash into terrain, there’s a good chance that your aircraft will become little more than a flaming wreck.

This is the kind of mission where the Valkyrie comes into its own. Not only can it carry troops, but its ability to hover means that you can hide behind those areas on terrain to avoid enemy fire. With its range of ace manoeuvres, the Barracuda will be able to do very well underground too, nimbly dancing between the rocky outcrops. It’s a good idea to upgrade them to the AX-5-3 variant as the midrange firepower of the swiftstrike burst cannon is deadly in the close confines of the cave.*

The subterranean assault scenario is a great new way to play Aeronautica Imperialis. Grab the Taros Air War campaign book and the Taros Area of Engagement board (one side of which features a sizeable subterranean water purification system) and give it a go for yourself.
