Updated with More-9th Edition 40k Preview: Terrain Rules

Here are some notes taken by others on the Twitch feed this morning revealing some of the new Terrain Rules for the new edition of 40k.

The Warhammer Community has followed up with a few items of note, so these are presented below now

Obscuring look a little convoluted, but always best to wait and see the rules on the table.

===== RULES =====

- Stu: "we see terrain as an equal player in the game. There's two armies (the players), and the third army - the terrain." Significant changes from prior editions, more interaction with players and their armies.

- the studio wanted to make sure LOS was cut down more - so that units could hide more efficiently, encourage players to put more thought into positioning and movement, outflanking maneouvers and so on. Units leaving / re-entering the board was tied in to this manouvering mentality.

- All terrain now falls into one of four categories; a HILL, an OBSTACLE (crates, tank traps, etc), AREA TERRAIN (ruins, craters, swamps) and BUILDINGS (dedicated units).

- Traits: terrain now have dedicated traits. Example; "Obscuring" - if the terrain is more than 5" tall you can't see through it. Windows can't be shot through anymore if a structure is above that height (why do this? players used to block up windows with planks and rubble in the past to reduce LOS as an example).

- rulebook will have examples for good terrain placement.

- NINE EXAMPLES of terrain pieces that might be common across the battlefield of the Warhammer 40,000 setting, as well as recommended traits for player-made terrain pieces.

- system has been designed for future-proofing; new releases will slot in nicely, as well as any additional categories or traits.

- HILL, OBSTACLE and AREA TERRAIN cannot be destroyed; BUILDINGS can. "Not until the dedicated terraforming / planetary devastation expansion in the future." - Wade Pryce, JOKING.

===== MISC =====

- more terrain kits are coming in the future.
