Each Character in a Harlequins army now has access to a Pivotal Roles special rule, which allows you to customise their datasheet and opens up new strategies for these peerless fighters upon the battlefield. Your Troupe Master can now replace their Choreographer of War ability with Darkness’ Bite.
This is perfect for finishing off any enemies lucky enough to have survived an initial assault or for adding extra damage to a larger target. Meanwhile, the Shadowseer can replace their Shield from Harm ability with Agent of Bedlam.
The confusion that the Shadowseer sows will ensure that any enemy reprisals lack their usual effectiveness. Pair this with the Prismatic Blur Stratagem from Codex: Harlequins, providing a unit a 3+ invulnerable save, to help protect your Troupes from even the deadliest enemy warriors.
In exchange for losing the Death Is Not Enough ability, the Death Jester can take Harvester of Torment. This means you’ll absolutely mow down enemy units.
Finally, the Solitaire can choose Unnatural Acrobatics in place of Blitz. As the outcast keeps moving, they become almost impossible to hit.
That’s not all – each of these Characters has a selection of Pivotal Roles to choose from and, with the use of a Stratagem, they don’t even have to give up an ability in order to take one.
Stratagems
Speaking of Stratagems, there is now a suite of new options which really let you emphasise the Harlequins’ play style. For example, if an enemy unit thinks that they have you cornered, use Virtuosos of the Webway to simply vanish, leaving nothing behind but the faint sound of laughter on the breeze.*
Alternatively, ensure that your show starts with a big number that will really bring the house down by using Murderous Entrance.
While it pairs well with any weapon, use this with a Troupe armed primarily with Harlequin’s kisses and easily slice your way through enemy units.
Enigmas of the Black Library
Finally, the Harlequins have cracked open yet another of the secret vaults within the Black Library to get at even more of the unique enigmas that lie within. Cegorach’s Lament is a shrieker cannon that is said to contain the endless echo of the Laughing God’s howl from the moment of Slaanesh’s birth.
Combine this with the Death Jester’s new Harvester of Torment ability from above to take out enemy units or use their Deadly Hunter skill to pick off Characters with ease.
That’s just a taste of some of the new rules found in June’s White Dwarf.
