In this box, you’ll find everything you need to get stuck into aerial warfare in the 41st Millennium – let’s dive(bomb) right in…
The Box
Doesn’t it look nice?
Exquisite.
Sprues
With the set open, we’re free to savour that new-box smell – you’ll have to wait until it hits shelves in September to enjoy that for yourself. Next up, we’ve got the sprues!
There’s a certain thrill to seeing iconic aircraft like the Dakkajet and Thunderbolt Fighter brought to life on a new scale (and in plastic, no less). Packed with detail, simple to assemble, and a joy to customise, these sprues make building your squadrons of aircraft as fun as playing Aeronautica Imperialis itself!
The sharp-eyed among you may have already noticed, but if not, it’s worth pointing out that these aircraft are on the same scale as Adeptus Titanicus.
The Accessories
See these funky things?
These are Aeronautica Imperialis bases, designed especially for the game. Facing is really, really important in the new game of aerial combat, and these bases are pre-marked with fire arcs for your convenience. This makes it easy to work out where your aircraft can go and what they can shoot at no matter how dynamically you’ve modelled them! The bases also feature in-built trackers for speed and altitude, allowing you to gauge them at a glance. These are probably the most advanced bases we’ve ever made.
Next up, we’ve got the battlefield – or, as it’s called in Aeronautica Imperialis, the Area of Engagement.
As you might have guessed from the bases, Aeronautica Imperialis is played on a hex-grid, so you won’t need a tape measure or tools to work out how far your aircraft can go. This map makes setting up a game super simple – just unfold on your coffee table/desk/the cockpit of your Dakkajet and you’re good to go! Of course, you’ll be able to build beautiful 3D boards for the game if that’s your bag, but this Area of Engagement map is a brilliant way to get started. It’s double-sided too, allowing you to add some extra variety to your battles.
You’ll also find loads of card tokens in the box.
These are ideal for keeping track of your aircraft between activations (the game uses alternating activations – it’s rad) and noting just who is where and doing what at a glance. You’ll also use them to mark your Ace Manoeuvres – speaking of which…
These are your Ace Manoeuvres! In Aeronautica Imperialis, our designers have turned movement into a highly tactical representation of dives, banking turns and sudden aerial acrobatics. Rather than move normally, each turn will see you and your opponent secretly pick Ace Manoeuvres for your craft before revealing and executing them.
This adds a strategic layer to the game where you try and work out just what your enemy has planned while getting yourself in the best possible position to enact your own plans. It’s sort of like chess, but more violent and exciting.
We’ll be delving into the rulebook…
…later this week with some previews and a full-length How to Play video, so we’ll just comment on how nice it looks for now.
Also, how great is this artwork?
Last, but very, very far from least, we’ve got dice. Because – seriously – you didn’t think we’d release a game without dice, did you?
You’ll be able to secure your Aeronautica Imperialis: Wings of Vengeance set this weekend when it goes on pre-order!
