The Space Marines are the foremost defenders of Humanity, but of the more than 1,000 different Chapters fighting in the Emperor’s name, there are some among them that stand apart from their battle-brothers. We’ve had a look at the Chapters whose military structure and fighting methods adhere most rigidly to the Codex Astartes, but now it’s the turn of those who have their own interpretations of its teachings – or flagrantly ignore them altogether. Read on to learn how the Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Deathwatch and Grey Knights fight in Warhammer 40,000: Apocalypse

Play Style

Before we go into specifics, there are a number of things to bear in mind with these Factions. Firstly, their units all consist of Space Marines* – as such, they’re all tough, skilful, well-equipped and reliable in battle. This also means they share the same Faction ability as their Adeptus Astartes battle-brothers of other Chapters.
Secondly, the three First Founding Chapters (Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Space Wolves), have access to the full range of Primaris units** in addition to their own Chapter-specific ones, so you’ll have a massive roster to choose from for maximum flexibility. Meanwhile, the Deathwatch can also make use of a number of Primaris units – including the new Repulsor Executioner – and while the Grey Knights have no access to Primaris units, their own warriors are universally deadly.

Top Units

Blood Angels – The Sanguinor

The Sanguinor is famed for appearing as if from nowhere, when the Blood Angels need him most, and turning the tide of battle. Can you think of a more appropriate setting than an Apocalypse battle for this angelic saviour to emerge? Not only that, but his fabled blade is brutally effective against any target, and his inspirational presence has a galvanising effect on the Sons of Sanguinius. The Sanguinor should be at the forefront of any attack you launch into the enemy lines to massively improve your Blood Angels’ damage output.

Dark Angels – Deathwing Knights

What’s cooler than a Deathwing Terminator? A Deathwing Terminator wearing a robe, of course! The mighty Deathwing Knights are incredibly hard to damage thanks to their storm shields (3+ Saves), and their weapons pose a threat to any target. If you want to put the fear of the Emperor into your opponent, use their Deep Strike ability to threaten your opponent’s lines early in the game. They’re tough enough to handle even multiple large blast markers and can pour on the pain when it’s time for them to take the fight to the enemy.

Space Wolves – Wulfen

Wulfen are a notoriously brutal combat unit in an already notoriously brutal combat army. In Apocalypse, they retain their devastating combination of speed and hitting power, as well as the powerful effect their presence has on the psyche of their fellow Space Wolves in the form of the Curse of the Wulfen. Spearhead an attack of Light Space Wolvesunits with a pack of Wulfen and you’ll be getting extra bang (or excessively violent melee action) for your buck!

Deathwatch – Corvus Blackstar

The Corvus Blackstar is an exemplar of the tactical flexibility for which the Deathwatch are renowned. Not only can it be equipped with weaponry that specialises in destroying enemy infantry, vehicles or aerial targets (such as with a twin assault cannon, twin lascannon and two Blackstar rocket launchers respectively), but it can bomb units it flies over with its Blackstar Cluster Launcher ability and transport up to 12 Deathwatch models too! Talk about an all-rounder…

Grey Knights – Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight

Regardless of your choice of weapon options, a Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight is able to smash any target to pieces in short order. In fact, half of the wound profiles on his datasheet require a mere 4+ or 5+ to wound either infantry or vehicles… As a Character, your walking death machine can also serve as a Warlord for a Detachment of Grey Knight Terminators that teleports directly into battle using their Deep Strike ability – simply give him a Dreadknight Teleporter and he’ll gain the ability to Deep Strike too! Of course, as a Grand Master, he’ll also be offering his Grey Knight brethren re-rolls to hit…

Top Command Assets

Blood Angels – Descent of Angels

Like their winged Primarch of old, none among the Adeptus Astartes better represent the image of the Emperor’s avenging Angels of Death than the Blood Angels. The Descent of Angels Command Asset is perfect for getting a Detachment of Assault Marines and Sanguinary Guard into combat and turning them into absolute killing machines.

Dark Angels – Secret Agenda

How can you turn the secretive nature of the Dark Angels to your advantage? By playing Secret Agenda, of course! Not having to reveal your orders until you activate each Detachment can really throw your opponent off balance and give you the tactical edge.

Space Wolves – A Deed Worthy of Saga

The Space Wolves are always vying to earn the most heroic saga by slaying the mightiest enemies. A Deed Worthy of Saga enables you to take ruthless advantage of this friendly rivalry amongst your warriors by picking a high-value enemy target for them to focus on destroying. Yes, it affects your entire army too!

Deathwatch – Death to the Alien!

This Command Asset represents the bread and butter of what the Deathwatch are all about – purging xenos! As much as this Command Asset will be useful against xenos Factions in almost any situation, it will never be more effective than if you have three Repulsor Executioners in your force – each of which will be able to fire twice with their heavy laser destroyer or macro plasma incinerator if they moved less than half their Move characteristic that turn!

Grey Knights – Daemon Hunters

As with the Deathwatch, the Grey Knights are never more deadly than against their enemies of choice. If your opponent has brought any Daemons with them, rest assured that the Daemon Hunters Command Asset will see them banished howling back to the warp by your Grey Knights in short order.
Even without the strict guidance of the Codex Astartes, it’s fair to say that any Space Marine Chapter can deliver the Emperor’s wrath on an apocalyptic scale. If you’re planning on starting or adding to an army from one of these Factions, there are some fantastic Start Collecting! Sets to get you going. If you’re after a mighty host of Primaris units, be sure to pre-order the Space Marines Battalion Detachment now while stocks last.

* Or Servitors, technically.
** OK, you caught us again – the latest Primaris version of Marneus Calgaris still only available to the Ultramarines Chapter. He’s no mercenary!
