You asked for it, you got it! That’s right – July’s issue of White Dwarf includes rules for kill teams of Chaos Daemons! To help prepare your immortal children of the Dark Gods, we’re looking at ways to get the most from your kill team…

Kill Team Composition

Before we get carried away with specific strategies and nasty combos, it’s worth taking a moment to look at what you’ll be working with. Chaos Daemons kill teams have access to four datasheets – BloodlettersHorrorsPlaguebearers and Daemonettes – which each offer you different strengths. Choosing to remain loyal to the daemonic servants of one Chaos God will ensure that your kill team is highly proficient in one area, but at the cost of the flexibility offered by including a variety of Daemons. Furthermore, your choice of Leader and other specialists can either reinforce your strengths or mitigate any weaknesses you may have.
Here are a few specialist recommendations for each model that may help to inform your decision…

Bloodletter

Combat Specialist: The obvious choice! At Level 1, Combat specialists gain an additional Attack (for a total of 3 Attacks if applied to a Bloodreaper, the unit champion), and if you follow the Warrior Adept path at Level 2, you’ll also be hitting on a 2+ in the Fight phase as standard!
Leader Specialist: Only a Bloodreaper can be chosen as a Leader, but its preference for melee will enable you to make ample use of the Lead by Example Level 1 Leader Tactic. This will level it up faster for using a Tactic from its specialism.

Horror

Demolitions Specialist: The Coruscating Flames attack of a Pink Horror makes it an excellent choice for a Demolitions Specialist, as its solid range and two shots will benefit greatly from the Breacher ability and Custom Ammo Tactic available at Level 1.
Comms Specialist: Given the supporting role of a Comms specialist, a Pink Horror Icon Bearer makes the perfect candidate, as you’ll also have the chance to blast the nearest enemy model from a safe distance. Make sure you include a second Horror to benefit from your Comms specialist’s Scanner ability (+1 to hit rolls) in each Shooting phase.

Plaguebearer

Leader Specialist: If you’re after a Leader with the durability to stay alive and keep earning you the additional Command Point from their Level 1 ability, Resourceful, look no further than the Plaguebearer unit champion – the Plagueridden!
Veteran Specialist: Plaguebearers are your only Toughness 4 Daemons, and with their invulnerable save and Nurgle-blessed resilience, they offer your kill team a solid, reliable core. These traits are further emphasised by the Veteran specialism, making a Plaguebearer an excellent choice.

Daemonette

Combat Specialist: An Alluress Combat specialist will fight with a whopping 4 Attacks, giving you even more opportunities to land those armour-rending wound rolls of 6+ with its piercing claws. What’s more, your murderous Daemonette can always strike in the Hammer of Wrath phase!
Scout Specialist: A Daemonette Hornblower with the Scout specialism works brilliantly alongside another two or three of its kind as part of a rapid strike team, enabling them to swiftly close on your enemy with before spearheading the charge.
Now that we know more about what we’re dealing with, it’s time to take a look at some…

…Strategies and Tactics!

Chaos Daemons can largely be divided into two camps – aggressive and defensive models. Bloodletters and Daemonettes are very much the former. With their Strength of 4 and AP value of -3 from their hellblades, Bloodletters are your heaviest hitters and the clear answer to power-armoured adversaries. If you’re facing a multi-wound opponent such as a Primaris Reiver or Intercessor – perhaps even a Commander – be sure to activate Cleaving Blow to double up your Bloodletter’s damage output. That’s a potential 6 Damage from a Bloodreaper Combat specialist – not bad for an 8-point model!
Meanwhile, Daemonettes are super fast – perfect for running down and picking off enemy Sniper specialists or models toting heavy weapons. If you’re looking to charge an elevated target and need a boost, Deadly Dance may give you the edge you need. And remember, if your model is within range of a Daemonette Hornblower, you’ll be adding 1” to your charge roll too!
Horrors and Plaguebearers are more suited to supportive or defensive duties. Pink Horrors not only start off with a 4+ invulnerable save, but their ranged attacks are not to be underestimated – especially when boosted by Mutating Fire for immolating more heavily armoured targets. Another advantage that Horrors have is that they split into two Blue Horrors once they’re taken out of action, which in turn divide into pairs of Brimstone Horrors. This can make even a single Pink Horror a very difficult proposition to shift from an objective.
Finally, Plaguebearers are solid options for holding objectives while your faster-moving elements take the fight to the enemy. An obscured Plaguebearer bolstered by the Pestilential Aura Tactic, when combined with its natural resilience, will be all but impossible to shift. But that’s far from their only trick – Plaguebearers also work well as part of a second wave, following up an initial attack by Bloodletters and/or Daemonettes. They may only have a single Attack as standard, but they hit at Strength 4, and their plagueswords will enable you to re-roll wound rolls of 1.
It’s fair to say that the Chaos Daemons have a lot more tricks up their empyric sleeves than appearances would first suggest. If you’re looking to start a kill team of your own, all you’ll need is a box or two of Bloodletters, Pink Horrors, Plaguebearers or Daemonettes.
