Kill Team: Arena is up for pre-order this weekend – an expansion for Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team that revolutionises the game’s rules for competitive play. If you missed yesterday’s article, which features an in-depth interview with one of the game’s lead playtesters, give it a quick read for more insight about the development of Kill Team: Arena. Today, we’re taking a look at what you’ll find inside the box:
Everything in the box is designed to help you play finely balanced, competitive games of Kill Team. First up are the ‘arenas’ themselves. These take the form of two double-sided gameboards and two frames of plastic scenery, each containing 5 doors, 4 barrels, 10 crates, 1 pipe, and 1 cylindrical container.

The 64-page Kill Team: Arena book introduces a brand-new format – competitive play – to the game. It starts off by presenting the ultra-close confines killzone rules, which are designed for fighting within enclosed environments (veterans of Kill Team: Rogue Trader will already be familiar with these)After all, the set’s gameboards universally represent interior locations that are great for creating tense and atmospheric gaming environments – you can expect plenty of vicious firefights and storming enemy-held rooms to achieve victory.
The gameboards themselves have been specifically designed to create competitive gaming battlefields that are not only super quick and easy to set up but present fewer variables that can potentially interfere with game balance. The boards favour neither close combat nor long-range firepower, with long corridors (some of which run the length of the gameboard) encouraging exciting shootouts, courageous charges, and multiple paths to reach the enemy that reward feints and bold actions alike. Both sides have the same tools, so the only advantages you’ll gain will be of your own making!
In addition to these exciting, claustrophobic rules, there are four new killzones, each with their own table of environmental rules – the Generatorium, Catacombs, Armorium Stockpile, and Garrison Vault.
The book also introduces Arena Objectives, which represent a selection of secondary mission parameters that you can earn victory points for completing during your games. For convenience, Kill Team: Arena includes two decks of 12 Arena Objective cards (one deck each for you and your opponent):
There are eight competitive play missions in the book, each with a map featuring opposing deployment zones and a symmetrical terrain setup to ensure even balance. These missions are also presented as mission cards in the set for ease of reference:
Doubles play – teaming up with a friend to take on a pair of opponents – has always been a popular format due to the different combinations of miniatures and Tactics that each team can employ. The Kill Team: Arena book also includes guidelines for competitive doubles games, known as Battle Brothers. There are four Battle Brothers missions, each with a double-sized map that uses both of the set’s gameboards. As with the other competitive play missions, all four of these missions are replicated on handy cards:
There are also 28 Battle Brothers Tactics (and an accompanying card deck in the set) designed specifically to enable you and your ally to work together even more strategically in a bid to gain an edge in battle.
The Arena book offers guidance on how to run competitive Kill Team tournaments and even use competitive play games in campaigns!
